      I need some help here. I have, like you, the first element copied many times. But the mask property affects all of my elements just like is the original layer affected. Imagine I have a box, and a big triangle. The box is only the half in the triangle. I multiply the box that it going to cover all the triangle. Now I apply the mask property to the boxes. All the boxes are now affected exactly the same is the first. If the first is only the half visible, now, with the matte property, all the boxes are only half visibles like the fist. I don't want that. Please help me.

    To do not add Set Matt to each layer, you can use Adjustment Layer and apply Set Matt effect on it only. So all layers below Adjustment layer will be using that Mask. Very useful tutorial, thank you!

      Thank you! This saved me so much work and made mine work. Because my objects I was trying to mask all had different transforms, it was affecting the mask for some reason and making it appear differently for each layer. But using an adjustment layer fixed all of that.

    Rather than copy and paste the effect onto each layer, place an adjustment layer above all your layers just below your mask, put the 'Set Matte' effect onto the adjustment layer, set 'Take matte from layer' to your mask layer and leave 'Invert Matte' unticked.
    This also means that any scaling/position changes etc. on your layers beneath will be taken into account.

    The negative for me about the Set Matte option is that the mask scales with the item it is matting (unless I don't know how to turn that off. I use matts to mask off media that's going to appear on LED walls so I want the matts to stay the same size and position no matter what asset I'm masking off so it doesn't bleed onto an adjacent wall. I turned off "stretch to fit" and it still scales if I scale the asset. It also moves its position with the asset, which is also not what I want. I LOVE Apple Motion's method of masking. I simple hit Command M and I get an image well for an Image Mask and I can drop any layer containing my desired mask into it and I've masked off my item. DONE. If I WANT the mask to change with the item there's a different option for that situation. AE needs to change the Track Matte option so it lets you choose any layer you want and that would solve this for everyone!

  • @AndyEngelkemier
    @AndyEngelkemier 3 года назад

    It's a bummer that this only works with objects that are basically the same size. You used precomps, so all the same. But if you had a piece of text, an image you imported and scaled, a precomp, and a shape layer. Then it would work on some, but not all.
    So then you're back to either duplicating (and maybe linking to get the same effect) a layer for a track matte, or copy and pasting masks (which also wouldn't work because those are children of the layer so would also be scaled). These are the things people always skip in tutorials, causing people to pull their hair out trying to figure out what's going wrong.
    I'd Love to know if there's a better way to solve that though. One that isn't precomping.

    • @TipTut
      @TipTut  3 года назад

      Look into the 'set matte' effect

    • @AndyEngelkemier
      @AndyEngelkemier 3 года назад

      @@TipTut That is Literally what I posted about. It doesn't work for objects with different scale. Track matte works, but not set matte. If you import things like a giant PSD file and scale it down and move it up to the top right side, then apply the set matte effect, it doesn't work the same way as a track matte. I was just saying, it's a shame that it doesn't. And it would be nice to mention that, and why. You've got lovely precomposed items. They are all the same size. So the results are just what you would expect.
      If they are not the same size as the composition, it will Not act as you would expect. There's the Scale to fit option, but that also might not be what you would expect.
      The only real way to do it is to create the mask either as a precomp and duplicate it over and over, placing it above each layer you would like masked, or duplicate the same object and use an expression to link it together so that it's essentially a copy of itself (which is nice when you want to be able to edit it in composition so you don't have to deal with the woes of precomp problems).

    • @TipTut
      @TipTut  3 года назад

      Have you tried continously rasterising your files?

    • @AndyEngelkemier
      @AndyEngelkemier 3 года назад

      @@TipTut Yes, that works great for vector objects like text and shape layers. But there's no continuously rasterize option for a PSD. The PSD in my example had to be scaled down to 18.8%. The anchor point is 2507x1018. So it's VERY noticeable that the mask doesn't line up. Parenting can Also have an adverse effect on this because the parent could be at 50%, then your layer could be at 50%. So 25% then? What does the effect work on? Beats the hell out of me. But track mattes never fail. It's just too back that if you need the same mask 40 times, you end up with LOTS of layers. And you can't always precomp.

  • @elpitz

    Hi,
    My Set Matte effect won't work properly.
    When I create my shape layer and apply the set matte effect to my pre-composed layer and choose the shape layer to take matte, it works fine.

    Any thoughts?
