Super fun! A simpler way to add shading to a black-outlined character is to add your shadow, tint it the colour you want it to end up, then set it to Darken in the Blend Mode drop down menu. It will darken any colour lighter than itself, meaning if the shadow is above a black outline, you wont see where the overlap of the shadow occurs - just on the lighter fill colour. That reduces your overall number of shapes by 1/3rd. Hope that makes sense!
Thank u sooo much Ben, I've been so inspired since I discovered you (this week :). Staying motivated is so hard but watching you makes it easier, you explain clearly and with enthusiasm. PLS keep makimg them
Haha, I agree. Art school literally costs so so much, why don't we just take advantage of the online resources?! Thank you so much for your awesome comment. :)
This is amazing, but I can't believe how time consuming it is just to do 20 frames. So many commercial clients now looking for this style of work but they balk at the cost when you tell them how long it'll take to do.
Yeah making 20 frames is already time consuming. But continuing to make, edit, and dub this into a concise tutorial is on another level. I adore Ben's hardwork on this! Auto subscribe!
One word: Overlord!!! You can't talk about ai to ae without using overlord! It's changed my workflow forever. No needing to mess around with files and ai layers, just hit import and you're done!
Absolutely! It's one of my favorite plugins. I use it almost every day. :D I try to keep my tuts plugin free for the kids. Plugins make it a helluva lot easier, just don't want people to think they're the only way :)
Omg, I can't believe how amazing your workflow is. I'm so glad I discovered you. I'm studying animation, and a few weeks ago I finished my short film, and I just wanna say thank you, bc your videos really helped/inspired me :)
You may be a beginner at cartoon animation dynamics but I see go gaps in expertise here. It does demonstrate how the rigors of cartoon animation aren't for the faint of heart but the results are worth it. I enjoy seeing AE implemented this way and not just another bread-and-butter "cool" logo ...followed by everyone copying it.
First 11 seasons of aqua teen hunger force are made that way. Basically just layers of images. And then they add movement and lip sync mouth movements on the main characters and bam, you got an "animated show"
this is SOOOO helpful to get an inside look on the process. Just came across your youtube and instagram and I'm just learning animation so I'll be deep in your content for a while lol. thanks so much Ben 🙏🏼
For that shading, you could try a inner shadow layer style set to darken, although you'd have less control. Would be easier to get that grainy look though. Alternatively I'd use a merge paths set to intersect with the original to be able to be a little bit more rough on drawing those darker parts. Great tut though, love the applications of the animation principles!
Interesting! Someitmes reaching for LImber, or Bendio, or Rubberhose (or a plugin in general) and wrestling with what it can and can't do, just needs to be side stepped through hardcore straight ahead animation frame-by-frame animation. Good for self-directed work! How do you feel the flexibility with change requests coming from a client in a production pipe?
Wouldnt the shading part be faster & easier using Color correction on top of the shapes within an animated mask? I guess the black strokes would not be affected this way.
Hey Ben, can you please do a video where you show your process of creating frame by frame on photoshop? Exactly similar to the process shown in this video but in-depth. Would be great!
As an animator in training (they should give me a paper hat) via self teaching and trial by fire work, I really appreciated seeing your workflow. Also, I want to discover the great animators and illustrators out there to watch and learn from. Anyone have suggestions?
I’m loving this thank you so much for the help. I’m new to After Effects and I’m trying to animate a character. I’m having some trouble understanding something tho. How do I outline lines that protrude or intrude a shape? For instance, the hand of your character has a line that goes inside the shape. How is that done without messing up the shape dynamics?
@@BenMarriott thank you, i like the way you explain the process without getting in too much details, you are always focused on the main subject which is amazing, thank you again.
This is the animation style I'd to try learning. I've been really bad at this hyper exaggerated animation in 3D but I think I'd have more luck understanding the concept in 2D because I have fewer things to worry about. Thanks for the tut, Ben.
Would love to see a video of you using rubber hose and/or duik. frame by frame is impressive but not doing it is one of the reasons I am learning AE. Saying that a real in depth video of what you know about frame by frame would be great too! Thanks for your uploads

Dude, watching you blow up this past year has made so many of us so happy, thank you. Request: I'd love to learn a bit more on shading (highlights and shadows). You know... when you're not insanely busy (haha yea right!). Would love your insight on this process. Can we not just create shadows/highlights within illustrator?
Really good tutorial man!! I didn't get how you did the arms and legs shadows...duplicate its color shapes and how did you put them a darker colour and change the position? For example in the arm shadow...
Thanks so much! I had a single shape layer for the arm with one shape inside, it had a pink fill and a black stroke. I duplicated that shape (still in the same shape layer) and removed the fill so it was just a black stroke. Then below the stroke and above the pink fill I created a darker pink with no stroke and animate that so it lined up with every frame. :) Hope that helps
