As a beginner animator I've been struggling with timing a lot and I've never seen anyone explain it using this method and just after watching this video I feel like I've learned so much. A++ I can't wait to watch more
I worked in 2d animation for 9 years and I can't still explain it like what you did here. And also you are right at the start of the video.. It is still overwhelming even if you have experience. I highly recommend your teaching for beginners and refreshers. a short Animation Survival kit
@@AlexGriggAnimation teaching animation (the practical way) and doing (pro) animation is a different skill. I'm happy (and envious) you get the same skill. Keep it up. I'm gonna watch more of your content to refresh.
that note about the perception of the length of the breakdown is one of the most valuable tips ive learned about animating this year. Been learning for a long time and that made a lot of concepts i've been mulling about click in a satisfying way. Thank you for your work!
Yes I'm so glad I found this! I've never seen another guide describe timing with holds like this. Anything involving a timing chart always assumes we're using a consistent timing (on ones, twos etc.)
I’ve been struggling with understanding how to adjust timing in my animations and the way you explained it has been so helpful, thank you so much for such a digestible break down!
Animation student from Paris here ! Your videos are really amazing. They're so well put together and informative. They help me check up on my technic in a fun and quick way. Thanks for your videos, it's really wonderful people can have access to such informative videos for free. Keep up the good work ❤️
These are amazing! I stopped doing animation for a while and I'm gearing myself towards it again. Seeing your videos bring nostalgia and comfort and also are pushing me towards trying again
Being an animator, i feel the things are very well put in here. Every animator gets stuck into same things at beginning and you are explaining those really good with the visual representation. Im recommending this to all my fellow animators. Keep it up and all the best!!
I'm re-watching this yet again. And this truly is the most helpful thing I've scene on animating. It just gives you such a nice tool to understand how to do what you want to do. I love it
Guys get Alex's class. Its amazing!!! I just finished it and am going back to binge this content. Alex, you content is GOLD make more videos and classes please, we need your mad skillz taught to us!¡!¡!
Bravo! I was stubbornly looking for software explanations, but your detailed explanation of the process help me understand why and what I had to do, and not how (click here or there). The software is secondary to the process of ideation and storyboarding.
I appreciate the homework at the end of the video. Often, I'll watch a tutorial and just think about what I learned, but the call to action pushes us to actually try out what we've learned. It's fun too, thank you!
I enjoyed seeing how you could do the blocking phase in After Effects - I spent a lot of the episode wondering how you could do it in AE, and lo and behold you covered it! As always, an amazing video
Really really helpful man, even for someone who has been animating for a while. The description of the timing between key frames and breakdown with the ball was great
just fantastically explained. I see aaron blaise do it like this all the time on his livestreams with the breakdown so I picked it up, but you verbalizing like this is so great
Yeh it's definitely something you'll start noticing more now you're seen it once. Check out the blocking for Pixar and Disney 3d films. They're using the same technique
This did help alot, I did alot of frame by frame, but it's more facial expressive/ science fiction / Effects type of animation. This is great tutorial for anatomy movement animations.
Even with stop motion there is a blocking stage. It's good to try out timing and it's also good for testing if the scene is possible with the puppet because it is a physical object. Like a rehearsal. And you take photographs as you go. And using the stills that you took they can be used as targets when animating the final shot.
this series are great! you are an absolute gem!! thank you so much for this well explained and concise teaching videos. very helpful. hope you´ll keep doing more of these
Thank you so much, timing and Blocking its the hardest part for me since i usually just feel the movement and go for straight ahead, but usally is not convenient, tysm this istuff is not in the books at all
I'm a beginner too and I learned on this channel what I never understood in other videos. But I'm sad that I haven't had more updates even with a rapid growth in subscribers.
this is a terrific keyframe animatoin tutorial,,,so helpful, you are genius, I really respect you from my heart and I hope you will give us more and more videos like this💝💝💝
Your classes are top notch and they helped me a lot! I am so much better because of you. I just hope you can make more of these classes, and would like you to know that you can simply show us the normal recording of animate UI without have to "redraw" the animate UI and also animating the UI. That must've taken you a lot of time! Anyway, that's just a personal comment to ease your workload to create these wonderful classes. Sincerely love your work.
thanks so much im trying to practice for stop motion I cant really inbetween as I would in 2d but all the information is super clear, important and beautifully exemplified thanks for that!!
This was super helpful and definitely makes tackling animation a little more palatable. Everytime I try to do an animating exercises I always get confused on where to add frames and if I'm even doing it right lol
this is such a good video ! i’m learning animation by myself with youtube videos and this was really cool. after animating a lot on flipnote i tried different softwares but rn i like to draw on krita so i think i’m gonna focus on it for animation too ☺️
I've been holding on getting into frame by frame animation for a long time and this series gave me the inspiration and boost to jump into it, can you please make a video on how you would approach a walk cycle, I usually do my walk cycle animations using an IK rigged character in after effects, I managed to make two decent frame by frame walk cycle animations, but am curious how you would brake down the animation. thanks in advance and keep up the awesome videos!
Ah excellent question. Keyframing like this works best when there are holds in the motion. Thats because there are real differences between the breakdowns and the extremes. When you have constant fluid movement like a walk cycle it can be harder to find those points. With a walk cycle I usually draw the contact poses first (heel striking the ground, and weight on the ball of the rear foot) and then do the passing poses (weight fully on the flat of the foot and the other foot passing below the center of gravity), Then I find poses between those keys. I pay special attention to the rhythm of the center of gravity (the hip joint) and to keeping the contact with ground consistent. It can be a good idea to try and remove the upper body entirely when you start. Do a couple of texts with just the pelvis, legs and feet. Then when you're feeling good about that do a full body version.
Leaving this comment so i can edit it later since yt has now recommended the videos from this channel to me and i wanna see if it will help me learn animation
Soo three months.. all i can say is.. YES! its been so help full simple and not confusing at all nothing mixed or up making me confused on what happening or not under standing and the recap at the end help so much plus the home work get me to actually try what i’ve learned lol tbh i didn't even know what inbetweening was or that the line thing(forgot the name sorry) on the side can map out your animation before actually animating it and thats helped alot so all i can say is yes.. pls give this channel a chance its so help full
I love what you are doing with this channel, really making animation clear and simpler to digest, thank you! I just wanted to say that in this video I found a bit confusing what you are explaining at 2:55, where you talk about breakdown and inbetween fames positioning. It did not click that easily to me what you said about my brain perceiving the first keyframe to hold from frame 1 to 5 and the breakdown to start at frame 5, and consequentially the way I should place my inbetweens. I think it would be easier to understand if, after you explained this, you added that we could insert a duplicate of the first key frame at frame 5, so we give the animation more information and we have the control and can directly see how much does the firts keyframe lasts. Just then I can understand why you put one inbetween at frame 7 and not at frame 5, which would be in the middle between K1 and BD. Maybe that's just me not understanding something else, or that's because I do 3d animation. However I found this info interesting and helpful to understand how we perceive our animation blocking. Thank you again for putting your time and effort to make animation accessible and easier for everyone, keep it up!
Yeh that's a good point. If you're animating something with graph editors like After Effects you need to duplicate teh keyframe and drag it to the start of the motion like you've mentioned. That's something I cover verrrry briefly in the video but maybe it would hve been better to mention it earlier. Thanks for the feedback

These concepts are common to other media and story telling. Emphasis, too, on planning needed beforehand: story, characters, thumbnail preview, etc.
