This is one of the best graphics/animation tutorials I've seen in a while. Great and direct explanations, happy tone and no self-centered advertisements. This is awesome!
I have used Adobe Illustrator for the past 4 years, so I am not a beginner in this program, however I am new to After Effects. This video is apparently for 'Beginners' but I can tell you it is most certainly not for beginners. Jess is clearly familiar with both programs, and because of this, assumes that you are too. If you are a beginner in either program you will find it very overwhelming when many many things are assumed by Jess. Such as what colours to use, the dimensions of the page, the units of measurement used, shortcuts and what each button does. You are never given any dimensions for the image you are creating and are just supposed to eyeball it. This video took much longer than 1 hour to complete as I had to replay sections numerous times to catch Jess' quick, sudden movements. Jess also seemed to be figuring out steps as she went, which resulted in more work than necessary for both herself and the viewer. Along with jump-cuts which cut out important information, such as keeping the grey background separate from the sticker (which causes problems later on when you spin the image or create a 'sticker' animation). I did finish the video and end up with the desired result, but the journey was certainly not enjoyable or easy. Almost took me back to the frustration I felt during the last year of my Bachelor's Degree. Sometimes you are better just to teach yourself.
Thanks for the heads up!! Esp detailing which part is missing 👍🏻 Helps w/ setting the right expectations for this vid. Gonna check out some absolute beginner 101 before coming back to this!! Just had a suuuper frustrating self learning with the donut blender video (was fuming 🙈🙈) 🤣 really can’t handle another one thts out of my reach so soon
I would say this is actually beginner level. I’ve used illustrator for some time enough to learn the basic which are finding out what does what blah blah, a bit of shortcuts. I consider that at least to be beginner level.
I’m new to AE & animation and your process appears quite intricate. How you go thru the process and explain all of it in only an hour is just incredible! It’s gonna take me hours to learn each cog in the wheel, but you explained everything in such good detail - thanks!!
As a complete beginner at adobe, I'm glad such accessible tutorials like these exist. It rlly helps to follow a professionals workflow as a guide. But it would have rlly helped to have keyboard shortcuts used on screen. I tend to get hardstuck very frequently on certain parts. Like the using the transform tool on the eye, couldn't figure out how ot what shortcuts used to drag out on top and bottom points at the same time. And just resorted to using the anchor tool manually on all points.
Genuinely speaking , I am a professional graphic designer and a video editor ....... I was looking for a vid to get me started with motion graphics ....This was hands down the best one I have seen
This was a super helpful tutorial!! I started using AE a couple years ago to make transition videos and fan edits, but this video introduced a whole new world of both AE and Ai to me. Thank you so much, and I can't wait to start making my own motion designs :))
fellow australian this is awesomeeeeeeeeeeee the tools are so cohesive and powerful now, makes me excited to apply animation to things im working on ! thanks im working on using illustration in design as a graphic designer- but i notice 3d and animation trends are hitting and its something i always liked back in school but it was not nearly as accessible for me
Omg! I really loved this tutorial, it is so clear and Jess is explaning step by step that there is no way to get lost! Thank you so much, for such valuable content, I learned a lot! ❤
Definitely had to see the after effects part prior to trying the after effects part because some people had said it was a bit complicated to follow. It isn't the simplest of videos, but it not super difficult either. You need a basic understanding of what happens in after effects when certain options are used to have a quicker understanding of what is going. This was a fun tutorial to follow although I didn't get the exaaact same result :)
Hi! We appreciate your insight! It’s great to hear that you found the tutorial fun, even if the results weren’t exactly the same. Every step in the learning process counts! Thanks for sticking with it and sharing your thoughts! Cheers!
Such a great tutorial!!! I started using AE only a year ago and haven't worked in it in a bit, this was a great refresher and I learned new stuff too. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
Great tutorial! Thank you! Here are two things that I know for sure: I will learn or I will fall in love. Or maybe both. No matter, I will start following you!
I am a newbie who is curious about graphics and animation and would like to do it myself. This video gives me an initial insight into the logic of the process. I'm glad to receive valuable information, thanks a lot for sharing!💯👍👍👍
i appreciate you making this but found it difficult to keep up. Our illustrator layouts don't look the same so it would have been nice to make sure ours looked the same when beginning. I appreciate you treating me like i know what I'm doing but I don't and thats why I was watching this tutorial. Also found it difficult to keep pace without knowing what buttons you are clicking. Some other tutorials include a graphic in the button left or right that indicate if a key is being clicked so we can follow short cuts.
Thanks for the feedback on this one, we're working on some more beginner motion design tutorials and always want to make sure we're doing our best to get the methods across so I'll take this on board and we'll try to spell things out a bit more on the next one! As someone currently learning, is there anything that you're really keen to get more of an understanding of when it comes to motion design?
When I started AE, AI, PS and the rest, I bought keyboard covers for each program. They've got all the hot keys and shortcuts on them, color coded. Used them for years. It really doesn't take long before even four-key shortcuts are unconscious though. Most useful key for tutorials, however, is the space bar. Try that first.
This so thorough and clear!!!! Thank you so much for the tutorial, I love the soothing vibe of your narrative, it really help clam newbie who is frustrated as me.
If you import a file from illustrator, make sure to import it as a composition instead of footage because it will appear as one flat object which is not helpful.
This was an interesting video. It was a good attempt to make a beginner tutorial with programs that are too complex to be considered "beginner" programs. I always find it interesting to see how other people use Illustrator and the tools that are available. Everyone uses them differently. I found the workflow to be chaotic since it was not nearly as organized as I would do things. Doing art in Illustrator is time consuming and small things can reduce the time, for example having a color palette ready instead of using eyedropper tools and searching for your colors can save time during the creation process. I think something to show what keys were being pushed would have been helpful. Keyboard shortcuts are used often in Illustrator. There are often many different ways to do one thing in Illustrator. I noticed that there were many tools she used that I rarely ever use. So, I think it is good for beginners to know that there are more ways than one to do something in Illustrator. Some ways are more frustrating or time consuming than others. I would have preferred if she had not been so fidgety since this was a tutorial. Continually moving things around and guestimating are not great in a tutorial. Some people like to know exact numbers for sizes, locations, etc. Fidgety is fine in a normal creation process but for a tutorial the viewer probably doesn't want to wait around for you to figure out where you want things and what size you want them. It is too much of a distraction for someone who is a beginner and trying to learn these programs. Illustrator is a frustrating program to learn and work with for a beginner, it isn't the type of program you can just jump into. So, a beginner tutorial creator needs to remember that beginners already feel overwhelmed and intimidated when using Illustrator. It would have been good to explain why she chose the tools and keyboard shortcuts that she chose since there are so many ways to do one thing in Illustrator. A beginner wants to know the "right" or "best" way of doing something and it helps them to know why a person chooses one option over another at times. If you are a beginner: There is no "right" way, there are just a ton of options for you to choose from and you have to decide which ones you like the best. I hope the person who made this tutorial makes more, but also takes a step back to be in the mind of a beginner so that she can adequately address their needs and concerns. It is difficult to take that step back when you are experienced but it is necessary. All in all, it was a good video that is more for advanced users rather than people just learning.
Cool and helpful tutorial, but one think i missed. And I think its really important... How can I export my Animation? How can I export an Movie /GIF or what ever?
I'm struggling to make the hand where there are gaps in the fill layer. And you just happened to skip that bit of the tutorial.. Not sure why lol. Any help would be appreciated!
It seems common practice for Ae tutorials not to show how to export your file, do I use the render tab in after effects or do I export using Media Encoder? How do I get the transparent background? Your tutorial, like most similar tutorials leave the beginner wondering what now.
thanks for creating this video. however this definitely is not a beginners video because there is not enough teaching on the fundamentals of how things work in a true beginners video. But I'll subscribe and look out for your future content and I look forward to it.
Check out Jess' new video, The Principles of Motion Design: ruclips.net/video/0N0NHlvMEWs/видео.html

Yeah I felt this
its ok ur doing great! it took me two hours to recreate the orange but i ended up making a dog which was fun!
I know the feeling it’s just a little fast paced for me but that’s the advantage of having the vid cause u can always go back and replay a section
Thanks for the heads up!! Esp detailing which part is missing 👍🏻 Helps w/ setting the right expectations for this vid. Gonna check out some absolute beginner 101 before coming back to this!! You're welcome!
I'm at 8 Minutes and I feel like I already learned more than in 13 years of school. Very nice video, already a happy user of your stock platform!

Amazing tutorial. The instructor's detailed explanation is just fantastic.
Glad it was helpful!💚
I’ve used Ai for over 30 yrs and I’ve learned several things from your workflow process
sat down for 3 hours but beaten all my fears of after effects. worth it!
Hi! That's fantastic to hear! Glad you pushed through and found it worth the time. Keep it up! 💪
Cheers!
"What else does an orange have on its face? Probably a nose" - fantastic tutorial with great style and pacing, thanks :)

Rafael Correia, is from Brazil designer. I love this workflow. Thank you!
Glad you like it!
Option shift - scale down from middle
transform e is useful when you only want to scale down certain anchor points (I think)

For the sticker back, you can actually just select None in the drop down menu and then change the background color in the color box.
Hi! That's a great tip for adjusting the sticker back! Thanks for sharing! 😊
Cheers!
