- This time, I'm back with a classic tutorial creating this smooth type animation with soft gradients and neon glows in service of showing off my favorite techniques I use in almost every motion design project. all in Adobe After Effects. I'll show you the entire workflow so you can see how it all comes all together in the end, faster than you expect.

So I just ctrl click? Where have you been all this years I spent twirling down into properties just to change my butt caps into rounded ones? 😢
Right?! Changing stroke caps is so tedious otherwise. I love buttcapper for that as well.
This same trick can actually be applied to many other programs, even folder hierarchies in some operating systems. It's also usable in reverse to close all properties, as if you just closed the top level it wouldn't close all the others inside it if you opened it back up normally
@@PixelDough that's really neat.
You can unlink the mask feather (like scale) so that only the y axis gets the feather and not the x. By doing that, you don’t have to make the sides of the mask larger to avoid the unwanted feathering
This is a great tip, I had no idea!
wow!
@@BenMarriott 0:19 how to do this jump effect??

Ben is a treasure to this community.
I just began to watch and the [Cmd + click on the arrow] to see all the parameters already killed me.
Man, do we NEED this kind of videos, thank you so much!
Thanks Coralie! If had discovered that earlier, I think I'd have saved months of my life toggling down properties
Your videos always have a lot of great tips but this one seems even more packed with them. Excellent stuff!
Ben you're a wizard. I love how all of this is achieved without any plugins either, just smart (beautiful) design.
I don't even want to be a professional motion designer, but it is so charming to watch your smooth pipelines of stylish minimalitic animations.
I've marked down some subtle but super useful but subtle key commands Ben dishes out (for myself as much as anybody)
- Revealing all properties on a layer -- 1:08
- Cycle through fill options on a shape layer -- 1:50
- Shortcut for easy ease on keyframes -- 3:44
- Selecting the mask on a shape layer -- 7:10
Thanks Ben! Another video I'll come back to several times I'm sure
Thanks for this. 😉🤞
I have never seen any after effect tutorial so beautifully made, Such nice and simple video with lots of info...
This comment made my day, thank you :)
I love these good old plug in free tutorials with a lot of useful informations!
BRILLIANT! So many nuggets of information and techniques I can use later!
This is so professional yet made seem so simple. Thank you 🙏🏽
Once again, thanks for your generosity!!! Adobe bless you!!!
Those tiny details beside the tip to notice is excellent, great tutorial!
one of the best gfx designer i have seen
Ben, your voice in these tutorials is so pleasing. You're the Bob Ross of Motion Designers
Thank you Ben
Thank you for watching!!
your videos are awesome, please never stop doing them
I think I might be in love with your tutorials.
Excellent little video, really nice animation. Reminds me i need to get back to the course. Had a busy year and lost a lot of motivation but will come back soon and continue where i left off :)
Thanks my friend!! Hope you get a well deserved rest over the holidays
Perfecto! Thanks Ben!
omgomg that "hold down ctrl and click arrow to reveal all properties of a shape layer" tip is on another level
High level class tutorial. Many tips learned. Thanks and keep the good work.
incredible. only recently found your channel and am so thankful for these tutorials.
It's funny how after using AE for over 10 years now I'm still able to pick up some new tricks - like alt click to cycle through fill options - brilliant!
that was so well done! Thank you for posting this.
You're welcome Mr. Ape! I'm stoked you found it useful :)
Great.thanks for sharing these fantastic techniques Ben
You're welcome Amir!
Great tutorial and above all great explanation.
I was able to follow this tutorial in davinci resolve using fusion, and still get the same result. This is so good and informative, Thank you for the awesome videos
I don’t know you read this or not but this is the best tutorial to learn aftereffect. It’s interesting, more engaging and in-depth. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
thank you ben!!!
This was super helpful tutorial!
Wonderful ben!
Satisfaction 😍
Happy to be of service :)
So useful, thank you!
Waking Up never been so Beautifull
Always good stuff ben
Nice!
You can unlink the feather dimensions instead of making a huge mask. Just a friendly pointer.
Great tutorial :) Well done!
Ben we love you
Mum! Come quick! I'm in a Ben Marriott video!
Great tutorial, love how meditative this one feels, compared to the mad dash getting it done in the first place!
Feel free to add that to your imdb Joden!
Came here for the motion tips, stayed here for the cutaways to the tape measure!
Glad it was worth whipping out the camera for those XD
Thank you!!
Thank you sir 😀
I like the reverse engeniring technique of glow effect. I guess now you can use it it with lottie. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for showing me this wonderful, incredible thing called anchor point tool. Yes, it's a shame, but I confess... I've been ajusting the anchor points using the parameters and then putting things back where they are supposed to be for 2 years. Somehow I felt this was wrong, but I kept on doing this. I have some work to get done still this year! I owe you some hour of sleep! And, no. I never used to label layers. Now I do. Specially pre comps. I reused some pre comps from previous project on my last video. And, it had 3 or 4 "comp1".
The whole thing is great and full of info as always, but I want a tutorial on Joden Newman's take of this!!! OMG such a visionary
15 years using AE and in 2min of this tutorial I already learned 2 new shortcuts!
you are just fantastic
Cool
Thanks cool cat!
You just saved me about a million hours with the cmd click arrow to open all the properties!
thx Ben.
i reeeeally love this game looking tutorial. Pls do more Game like effects
how did you came up with this idea so fast? I guess you need to have tons of references to create this fast right? Great job!
Shades of Bob Ross...I felt so calm and positive watching this 😀
i've never added masks to shapes because it just creates more shapes. Everytime I was applying masks to comps and solids for that matter
wow, just wow, you learn something new everyday

Hey! Great tutorial but it is worth noticing that to simply duplicating beams and adjusting their positions to specific letters you should choose font that has each letter same size (width) otherwise you will have to adjust beams' width or change font. :)
Nice!
3:10 One little plugin I found insanely useful when animating is the Anchor Point Mover that comes with the Animation Composer 3. Just snaps your anchor point to any corner or center of the shape/text or whatever. And it's free
You don't even need a plugin for that. Just hold the Ctrl key, and it will snap to center, a corner, or the middle of any side.
@@deadneck13 Good point. But if you wanna realign a bunch of anchor points at once with just one click, that's a great way to do it. It's just a bit quicker and helps me lot when the assets change or I wanna try different ways to animate something
you can also add a touch of noise to help with the banding.
Dios mio, que hermoso
Awesome video,🔥🔥🔥 thank you for sharing this…I’m brand new to AE, what would be the best way to change colors of each letter?
Thanks again!!!
❤️❤️
Two?! You're too kind :)
Many of you probably know this, but exporting from Adobe XD directly to After effects is a game changer!
Each artboard from XD basically becomes a composition, just remember to rename layers etc before exporting.
And groups become parented with shy parameter. which is nice.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
this feels like a 2011 opening sequence for a streaming service
10 years with AE didn't know I could anchor snap on points damn thanks
Say no more. I am subscribed.
Wonderful minimalistic animation. May I know which font have you used for the word? Much thanks! :D
جميل ماشاء الله
im a sucker for keyboard shortcuts
A question if I may. You said you made the letters into individual layers in photoshop. Is there a difference between that and changing the letters to shapes in AE? Thanks.
Where did you find those musics/Sfx? Sounds amazing! Could you give a few keyword for this kinds of musics please?
hey friend, thanks a lot for the video.
I've been looking for a tutorial on how to make these elements go up and down for a while, exactly as it was done at 0:20 with the AE file icon. I don't even know what to search to find out how to do this, because I already researched several terms and did not find anything teaching. Could you give me a light? Do you have any tutorial about this? Was it in Premiere that you did it? If so, even better for me. Thanks.
14:05 We NEED this guy to be featured in another video
So kind, thank you!
Okay this is a very stupid question but, what do you do to import from illustrator, do you mean that you export the layers and then place them in after effects? Or is there an explicit way to bypass that step and import illlustrator graphics directly into after effects?
Couple of tips:
- Use a null for animation so you dont repeat yourself
- You can adjust the alfa in the gradient
- Precomposing is your friend: make one beam and ctrl + d afterwards
How do I make a different duplicate of the precompose? I mean, I want to duplicate and change what is inside without changing what is inside another duplicate precompose of the same thing.
@@ePICS8 Just copy and paste what’s inside the pre-comp, pre-compose the newly pasted as a different comp name
@@ePICS8 aescripts > TrueCompDuplicator
@@ePICS8 in the project box (where all the comps/solids/images are) just copy the comp you want and paste it in there and use the copied comp.
@@octas_filmes or download this
Could you put the link for the tape measure in the description? thank u
Question: do you know any website for found best color palettes?
Can you share the background music you used? I really like it
I had trouble around the 10-minute mark when copying and pasting keyframes. The frames weren't appearing on the layers I pasted them onto. I solved it by separating the X/Y dimensions and only pasting to the Y. I must have missed the step to separate dimensions on all layers; I only did it for the M layer.
im also still learning ae
but i assure you, that guy with "more money more drugs more rock n roll", will go farrrrrrr xDDDDD
Ben, how do you make your screen recordings so crispy? I am on Windows too and it always looks ugly and pixalated.
💖
Biggest learning from this video: "tittle".
And also everything else 😂
1:53 - what's the trick to showing the handles? I have the layer selected, I have 'toggle mask and shape path visibility' on, I've tried selecting the gradient fill within the shape layer... I know you can manually change the start and end points, but still confused about getting those handles to appear in the composition window
Can we animate these beams to music like a visualizer?
you could've used the width of the layer, with Layer control effect and a simple expression, making width of the beam always follow the width of the letter, and just changing the "parent" on the layer control for each letter
Also copying effcts with Cntrl + Alt + C would also link all the parameters, of the effects pasted, to the original effect
Although the size parameters access through expression would probably work better if you imported the letters from illustrator using something like Overlord or just copying and pasting the shape directly
That would definitely be useful, especially if the letters width changed as well. Thanks for sharing!
1:10 just double press the U key it'll reveal the size
Hit UU to reveal all the properties which have been changed from the default values, massive time saver1:04
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT MY PC BRO IS IT GOOD FOR AFTER EFFECTS AND ILLUSTRATOR ?Gaming X G100, Core i5-10400F, 16 GB, RTX 3060, 1 TB M.2 PCIe
It somehow feels like blasphemy to leave one of those "why didn't you just..." comments under one of your videos, but why didn't you just unlink the feather properties and adjust the y-value only, instead of having to keep an eye on the position/size of the mask? 😄
On a sidenote: for everyday adjustments like size/colour/contour, I find it easier to just double-tap the U button becasue I get easily overwhelmed with too many options lol, but that CMD+click tip will definitely come in handy for layer effects. So thanks a lot for another very useful piece of content 🤗
Heretic!!!! I honestly had no idea you could unlink the feather properties like that. Love comments like this, thanks for sharing the info!
1:50 can I not do this in CS6? I don't have two little handles extending from my little blue point.
where do you find your animations sounds?
hey how can I edit the words on your final project
Why you're not using GPU acceleration?
Which font u used in this tutorial?
i had to pause and rewind like a million times and then id accidentally hold space while focused on youtube and drag something off in ae
