Not only is Ann Wilson the most stupendous singer in recorded music's history but no doubt the most energy-filled women to ever sing and perform on stage the last 40+ years.
This is live - this is what live sounds like when people actually have musical talent. This is something that too many current "bands" cannot accomplish because of too much reliance on pitch correctors and other studio tricks.
A disgrace Badfinger not in the R n R HoF when far too many non rock artists/ groups are. Ripped off years ago and still getting disrespected. A wonderful band who lost two great guys way too early.

Ann Wilson has ALWAYS been my HERO.. I TAKE HEART VERY SERIOUSLY.. I REFUSED TO SING ANY HEART KARAOKE UNITIL I HAD MASTERED HER VOCALS TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY.. and I've been singing Anns songss for a very long time doing her proud (i hope)
As much as I love Nilsson, on this song, Heart leaves him, and every other cover, in the dust. And of all the great female rock voices - there are a bunch - Ann Wilson continues to be my personal favorite. Emotion, power, range, and soul - she has it all.
I'll make it 3. As great as Heart is, the emotion is missing. And I believe Badfinger doesn't have the emotion in it either. Neilson nails it. Mariah is terrific, although, in my opinion, the official video the background vocals take away from the listeners identifying with her emotion. Covers her up and interrupts the listener being immersed in the experience. Nilsson didn't do this song origninally. Badfinger/The Iveys did. IMO, he butchered it. This was one of the cries for help from Pete Ham. I would love to hear Heart do it in the spirit of the original.
My family had a restaurant way back and the first time i heard it in our jukebox(i hope some of us still know what a jukebox is) in the early 80s when a customer selected this song - i was freakin' blown away! Ann's voice got me emotional and she became my instant crush(even to date 😊). There isn't anyone like her - beautiful, good sense of humor, humble yet confident, above all - talented & gifted.
They did it at the Seattle New Years Eve show in I believe 1978. I was 12yo and remember Ann wearing a top hat singing her lungs out. Miss the original band.
Sometimes someone else's interpretation is better than the writer's. Or maybe not better, but just different. It seems Nilsson and Badfinger knew each other so maybe their members had a hand in his production or gave approval of his interpretation. I think he did a marvelous job and I was very surprised to learn he hadn't written it. Badfinger is a great band as is Heart, but I prefer Badfinger's and Harry Nilsson 's, especially the latter.
Yea but the members of Badfinger OPENLY ADMITTED that Nilson's cover was much better than their original version, plus they appreciated the "Royalties", :)

still have my ticket to this concert, (oct 15, 1978) not key Largo, largo capital center, landover md or Washington DC capital center, its part of the full concert also posted I was there have my ticket still too, and dog and butterfly was released 7 days before this concert so even cal jam-2 doesn't include the 2 other good songs. The perfect prime age before ditching Roger my first w/ Roger was like 10x better concert than 1980.
I've always loved Ann Wilson's voice. Love all her songs - "Stairway to heaven", "All I wanna do (is make love to you)", and everything on HEART's 1980s albums - it was the peak of their career, and Ann's voice was at its best then. But when it comes to this one particular song, I'm afraid I'll have to make an exception. It's Air Supply who did this song the best. Their version of "Without you" was the first I heard in my part of the world and they really rocked the song. Air Supply forever!
I know a woman who is 29 now but, when I met her she was 28 and she reminds me so much of Ann who was 28 at the time of this recording. So beautiful! Long dark hair, brown eyes, and the most knock out smile that lights up a room. Her personality was even more beautiful than her looks and that's saying something! I always called her my Ann Wilson look alike

Heart's recording of this song highlights our, our as in flute players, (although the term flautist is more widely known, but I like flutist better for the obvious reason of its pronunciation being prettier), beautiful vibrato that is naturally used in vocals as well. One thing I don't understand is why they chose Ovation acoustic guitars with the plastic backs on them ? Anytime you put it on your lap it creates static electricity and feels like it's going to slip off it's not the greatest sounding guitar.
Mariah has a great set of pipes technically, but her phrasing and every other aspect of her singing sucks. And as God and everyone saw on New Years Eve she has to lip sync all the high notes these days, lol.
What I hate about Mariah Carey is she refuses to hold a single note, always singing scales instead, it's so exhausting listening to her, I don't find her impressive. Mariah take one note, any note, just one time and make it yours, I've got the feeling she can't.

That is your opinion and you're entitled to it. 40 million records sold since the original lineup left says you're wrong, but you're still entitled to your opinion. I loved the original lineup, but the current lineup sounds better live (I truly detested the 80s lineup live since they sounded too thin in my opinion). We all have our opinions but without Ann and Nancy Heart wouldn't be in the hall of fame and wouldn't have been around for 40 years. The same can't be said for Roger Fisher or Steve Fossen.
Totally disagree. Mariah is a pop singer and she sings a pop version of this. Ann and Heart are a rock band and they sing this as a rock ballad which IMO is better, but it's a matter of preference. Technically Mariah is a fine singer, but as we heard last New Years eve she is 80% lip synching and trickery instead of being the real deal.
Heart is my all time favorite female vocal band. I am talking about one song, two different venues, and I stand by my opinion That's all it is. I saw Heart in concert last year.... probably would never by a ticket to see Mariah Carey.
And I stand by my opinion. We are all entitled to our opinions. I've seen both live and I've seen both perform the song live and I think Wilson and Heart do a better job.

If you're going to cover a song, do what Heart did here and MAKE IT BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL or don't do it at all! Otherwise, what's the friggin' point?

It's an album by Harry Nilsson in which he made the song famous, although it was written by Tom Evans and Pete Ham of Badfinger.
Nilsson is the ONLY artist that can do this song the way it should be done…in my opinion.

Make no mistake, I love Ann Wilson. But these comments about these two women make you forget that they were only PART of a band. A band that existed before them and in the end, they ruined. This lineup with the two split lead guitars (neither of which is Nancy) IS Heart.

That is your opinion and you're entitled to it. 40 million records sold since the original lineup left says you're wrong, but you're still entitled to your opinion. I loved the original lineup, but the current lineup sounds better live (I truly detested the 80s lineup live since they sounded too thin in my opinion). We all have our opinions but without Ann and Nancy Heart wouldn't be in the hall of fame and wouldn't have been around for 40 years. The same can't be said for Roger Fisher or Steve Fossen.

I love Heart. But not as good as Mariah Carey's 1996 live version in Tokyo. This song is a better fit for Mariah.

Totally disagree. Mariah is a pop singer and she sings a pop version of this. Ann and Heart are a rock band and they sing this as a rock ballad which IMO is better, but it's a matter of preference. Technically Mariah is a fine singer, but as we heard last New Years eve she is 80% lip synching and trickery instead of being the real deal.
Heart is my all time favorite female vocal band. I am talking about one song, two different venues, and I stand by my opinion That's all it is. I saw Heart in concert last year.... probably would never by a ticket to see Mariah Carey.
And I stand by my opinion. We are all entitled to our opinions. I've seen both live and I've seen both perform the song live and I think Wilson and Heart do a better job.
@@WithaJoeFro That's bullshit. She lipsyncs nowadays, but didn't back in the day. There was some dubbing involved for home video versions of her concerts, but if you listen to the undubbed versions online, she sounds incredible.
