I'M A NEARLY 60 YEAR OLD BLACK MAN AND THIS IS STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS.AND NO NEED TO THINK I'M YELLING AT YOU OR ANYONE ELSE READING THIS.I JUST PREFER TO TYPE IN BIG LETTERS.IT'S ALL ABOUT LOVE FROM ME TO YOU.
You be you Old Skool.
Well, let me say We can tug on Nilsson. I LOVE the Point myself. P.S. I had no idea he did this song. Nilsson gave us so much.
I'm 80 and love this song. I had a lot of fun romance when this was popular!
This song is really top although so sad...
@@PaddyO1958 he be OLD SKOOL AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE indeed.
Lets not forget who wrote this amazing song, it was Pete Ham, lead guitar and vocalist from Badfinger who sadly took his own life. I knew him personally from College back in Swansea, South Wales. Missed very much. RIP Pete.
Makes sense given how great Badfinger are
I never knew he wrote this. Incredible song. I'm 69 and never knew. May you always have peaceful, enjoyable memories of Mr. Ham. God bless.
Incredibly talented band, Badfinger
Always will be one of my favorite bands. I only saw the Joey Mulland version of Badfinger in Chicago years ago. Wished I was old enough to have seen them all in concert.
Pete Ham's verse, Tom Evans' chorus put together as one seamless song. A truly joint work of heart string tugging magnificence. Both tragic, and poignant, especially given the outcome for both writers. Nothing but contempt should ever be felt for their subhuman manager who caused the loss of life.
I'm a 77 years old and this is one of the most beautiful heart-wrenching songs and I love it

I’m a Vietnam combat veteran. This song is very personal for me. I lost so many very close comrades. It happens all so fast. We never got to say goodbye to them nor was allowed time to grieve. I stand and salute my brothers in arms that have taken their place in history. Some day I’ll be joining them again.
Thank you Barry.
Thank you for your service, and sorry for the loss of your brother in arms
Thank you for your service & sorry for all your losses, cuts deep I am sure!!!
Thank you for your service, Barry. Like you, this song has a special meaning to me, as well.

My service dog had to be euthanized on 9/16/2023. A few months shy of his 14th bday. I’m a disabled veteran that lives in chronic pain w a multitude of health conditions. Jax got me through so may horrific days. I’m struggling now and this song really hits me hard, but he’s pain free now & I know we will be reunited one day soon. RIP sweet Jaxie. Nilsson is not original composer of this song
@@njpb7578 Yes, I am fully aware that the song was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans, but their Badfinger version does not pack the emotional punch of the Nilsson version. It's also quite ironic that the two who wrote the song ended up committing suicide.

And Thanks to George Harrison for supporting Badfinger, and then signing them to the ‘Apple’ label… until they were lost in the chaotic reorganization meant to trim losses from other musicians who were a personal friend with one or more of the Beatles, merely a backup singer, or a supporting act, and so Badfinger lost their direction, couldn’t find a proper manager, and then fell into financial disarray!
Losing Pete Ham at such a young age was a tragedy, especially with such a monumental body of work that still resonates today! He was only 27 when he committed suicide, so this should make him a member of the “27 Club”, but his name doesn’t appear on the list (Kurt Cobain also took his own life and he’s at the top of the list)!!
I am 82 years old and this is one of my favourite songs of all time.. He was a wonderful artist.

And so different to the original. Such a sad song but it sounds so beautiful.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I have spent most of my 56 years somewhat in a state of denial about how much pain I carry with me. It’s songs like this that remind me how important it is for me to stop and grieve my losses.

Yes, the piano made this song more beautiful ❤️
I was a musician in NYC in the early 80’s who was fortunate enough to meet and become friendly with Badfinger’s Tom Evans. I asked Tom what part of the song he wrote, he sang “ can’t live if living is without you, can’t live can’t give anymore” from 2 feet away. I was in the presence of greatness. It is probably the most heart wrenching lyric ever written. Tom was gone a few months later. May he RIP
BadFinger was a very great group with some very tragic happenings 😢
Wow. '79 was a special year for historical reasons. This song is a kind of musical full-stop on the 70s. Songwriters would never again write like this. Burt Bacharach died in February, one of the great masters, I wonder if he wished he had written this song.
It is tragic what happened to Pete and Tom. Badfinger were a great band
Wow! I remember this song from when I was three years old (I still have the single my Mam bought it for me in 72 I think it was)
I played it every day loads,
I never forget the amazing record orange label on it swirling around & at the time we could only afford a black n white TV.
That record player must of cost a fortune to my very hard up and very hard working parents..
Ps the second single was John lennon's... wars over!
Memories eh!
Love, love BADFINGER 😢❤
I am sixty two. I have heard a whole world of good songs. This song has always been, just that bit more than just a good song. I never get tired of hearing it. Great lyrics by Badfinger. One of the best songs ever written. Pete Ham & Tom Evans will live forever. Great vocal interpretation by Harry Nilsson too.
I still cant believe Badfingers story hasnt been made into a movie. The world needs to know about them and what they went through, especially the treatment they received from their manager, Stan Polley (Pete Ham even noted him in his suicide note!). They were a phenomenally talented band and created great music in spite of their adversities. With the right backing and management, they could have been on the most successful acts ever.

gone
I’d like to think there’s a heaven and that Harry is up there still singing this song, it’s a song that will never die.
I first heard this when Badfinger did it in the 70s. Harry was a genius with a great vocal range and it's really sad how he drank himself to death. Great artists often have awful demons.
And he recorded it in ONE take.
@@tahirakathleen5065 Peter Ham the man who originally wrote this song and lead singer of Badfinger committed suicide when his manager screwed him out of many record deals and money and lost it all.
All those minor chords get me everytime. It will be 50 years next year since it went to number one but everytime i hear it the hairs on my neck stand up. Such raw emotion on such a sad but haunting song.
Gorgeus
The history of this song is even more haunting. Perhaps the best known song from the 2 main songwriters from the ill fated group, Badfinger, Pete Ham and Tom Evans both took their own lives. Ah, what might have been.
Aren't they, mainly, major chords? (I could be wrong, though) :)
Breathtakingly beautiful song causes a visceral reaction every time I hear it...memories of a turbulent time in my life in early '70s wrenches my heart.

So true
Right back to the start the heartache never ends
Not for me.
My two first exes cheated on me and I haven't been in love since.
This was 12 years ago.
I've "tried" to fall in love again but I just cant. I just feel nothing anymore.
I think it is because I repeated everyday for years that "I should not care", "humans are like animals, cheating is in our nature".
And it's a double edged sword.
At one point, I feel free from any emotional pain.
But at the same time, I want to have children, a wife.
But its too long time. I think I'll have to be alone.
Think about this, dont cheat. Be a better person and give the other one dignity and leave before you jump in bed with others.
It's not hard. It's only your ego and that you are afraid the new one will ditch you.
If you ever think about fooling around with someone else, leave your current partner because if you are attracted to someone else, then your love for your current love, is not love.
So save your own time too

He was only 27 when he committed suicide, so this should make him a member of the “27 Club”, but his name doesn’t appear on the list (Kurt Cobain also took his own life and he’s at the top of the list)!!
I was watching the movie "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" and this was the love ballad. My heart leaped out of my chest!
Played this at my husbands funeral 12 weeks ago...beautiful song....so true...I CANT LIVE IF LIVING IS WITHOUT YOU...XX
i'm so sorry for your loss & what a beautiful song choice for him 🩷
Thank you..x
So sorry for your loss. My husband passed last Oct. It's surreal. This song always makes me cry. We will make it. We were married 43 years. This song holds a special place in my heart. Again my heartfelt sympathy. You are not alone.🕊️🙏✌️🌻🌻
Thank you very much..x
I’m sorry about your husband, my condolences.
It's fifty years since this was number one, I was 14 years old, and this still means so much. So beautiful, this is timeless. just wonderful.
I was close to same age, maybe 12. Fabulous!
I Was 9, And I Still Love It For Its Timeless . . . :-(
Yup, we're all old fogeys now. This generation will never know.

This guy had more talent than most people give him credit for. His voice range was incredible. He died way too soon

Ahhh…..memories of the good old days. Cheers to all!
I was a senior in high school when this song hit, now I'm a senior, glad to hear it now.
Me too. Celebrating our 50th Class Reunion this weekend.
@@cindybear Nice..!
LOL, I had to read that twice.
I hate to be old...
@@drevakelemen52n92 relax, old age will not last too long.
What Nilsson did with this song is iconic to say the least, I wonder how many people know it was written by Badfinger originally, just a year before. They never received a penny in royalties and ended up taking their own lives. A truly tragic story surrounds this masterpiece.
yes, one of the saddest stories in the music industry
How their manager is not still rotting in jail is another issue
Tbh they were awful compared to this, only him and Mariah have ever pulled this song out of every version I have listened to
Wow ive always hated that songwriters got shafted monetarily imo still do in 2022 takes great song matched with right singer
SHEER GREED DESTROYED THE GOOD
Doesn't matter what color you are music is universal it is shared by everyone ❤
Music🎶 the universal language 🌹
A timeless classic!
Always brings tears to my eyes.
He sang it with such passion and emotion!
Missing you so much Mom, Dad, Brother Nicky and my precious Robert.
I can't live without you 💔
This beautiful Nilsson song came on the radio and I, who am not a very good singer, sang along. Then my husband, a great singer and Nilsson fan, joined in with gusto. We were laughing, sharing this sweet, silly moment together. When it was over he teared up. He knew and I didn't, that he was dying and now it's so unbelievable that I do have to live without you, my love.
He lives in your heart. Blessings..
I am so sorry for your loss, and very glad you shared this very intimate story with everybody. Bless you. ❤
So very sorry😢
That got me.
I am so sorry... He will always be with you and you will see him again. May God heal your heart, darling.
Much beauty and pain for everyone. God blesses you and me. We all need it.
So this is the song that inspired No promises to keep from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth huh, thanks now I’m depressed…
This is the best version of this song, so much emotion in his voice, it brings me to tears everytime 🥺🥺
Absolutely. It’s just so beautiful and it’s one of my favourites. How are you doing? Hope you are fine and staying safe out there?
I read your post, Cindy, and tears began to flow, and I haven't played the song yet.
YEP.
Dunno, the original by Badfinger sounds way better to me.
It's nice. But Mariah stonks too
Many versions. Harry Nilsson singing from the heart is the finest. . Thanks and recognition to the late Peter Ham ( Badfinger) for writing such moving lyrics.
harry nilson's cover is simply beautiful, it's a shame that badfinger had such a nefarious manager
Tom Evans also helped with the lyrics.
Pete Ham wrote the verse for a song and couldn't come up with a strong chorus. Tom Evans had written the chorus for a song but couldn't come up with a strong verse. They decided to Frankenstein the two parts together and there you have it. Their version is real good but Nilsson (and his producers) took it to the moon.
Not just Badfinger & Harry Nilsson, another version in Without You is Air Supply & famous song for all time is Mariah Carey
Ham deserved the credit for this song, but it's hard to believe that he could write such moving lyrics and then perform it with no passion whatsoever.
I’m an eastern Kentucky hillbilly and like this song
I'm not a hillbilly and I like this song lol!
I've listened to this song awhile back ,I recently lost my beautiful bride to cancer she turned and gave me her final look at me and smiled .this song is what I went thru. Thank you Harry nilsson.
I’m only 24 yrs but I find this song to be a spectacle. So much emotion and it feels genuine
He recorded this in one take, all the way through, no edits. And he only ever performed it live once, ten years later with Ringo Starr. It may thus be the case that he only ever sung it through twice in his life!
Cool info thx
Not "quite" accurate, as he did the background vocals on this, as well.
Yeah, the vocals are double tracked in places and also he did the harmonies, so not just one take.
Recorded in one take, after playing it once in rehearsal. Nailed it on the first try.
@@dameandeleon627 That was the Ringo show. My mistake it was *20* years later.
Have heard many great songs in my 86 years but this is one of the most beautiful and moving.
I was a teenager then. Now 66 and I still love it.
Moi 67 et toujours et à jamais en moi bizzz de France
I'm 66 too, still I love it ! One of the best song ever!
Me too. 66 now still loving it. The original Badfinger version can't compete.
Yo ahora 68. Tenía 18 años y cuánto la baile. ❤❤
I am 69yrs remember trying to sing this with my mates 1969/70s under a concrete stairs sounded quite good, John Rooney st Anne's Lancashire UK aged 69yrs
One of the most beautiful songs of the 70s
Might originally be a Badfinger song, but this is the definitive version. Brilliant.
66 years old.... TIMELESS!
Written by the Badfinger…but while recording it at Apple, Harry heard the song and recorded it himself…and FLOORED the world. I had the privilege of playing with EX members of Badfinger in the early 80’s. Harry’s is one of the greatest if not THEE greatest cover OF ALL TIMES! A masterpiece of a composition performed masterfully! Sweet sweet Jesus!
Hmmmm…..god bless America 🇺🇸 😡
Badfinger were royally screwed by American corporations, along with other sources raping them for their material…this is why Pete Ham (the co writer of this song) topped himself, as he simply saw no other way out of it.
Pete Ham could have been one of England’s best song writers of his generation. His suicide at 27 didn’t even entitle him to the American ‘27 club’, probably because very few people in America even know who that guy is! This is probably the saddest episode from the Beatles ‘Apple’ label’s history. Nuff said.
.?.?
This song was playing when I left the orphanage. It was playing in the background as I was lugging my stuff out. I know it is and was impossible at the time but so wanted to stay with my family there at orphanage. Funny how all around me though , I would be happy. I hope the rest of family had the luck I did in running into good people.
Wow...that was absolutely heart-wrenching.
met a lot of guys in Vancouver, BC who were given up for adoption (gone to a farm) in Ontario and when they were 15.5, there was the gate, open to the road. fortunately for them, the road led to the west coast and the sixties, where a lot of young people hit the road.
I'm72 and this song brings me back to 1971 when I said good bye to the love of my life at the airoort in Milan.
Hello Dianada, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the COVID-19 virus??
This song is personal to me.....lost my dad in 1989 and couldnt imagine what it be living without him, 💔 😪 I'm now 50 and it still fills me up 😢😢😢😢
This song is priceless and timeless. Tears, every time.
A beautiful soul.
Tears to eyes.
I bought this record as soon as it came out. It embodies every heart ever broken, every love unrequited. Harry Nilsson was an artist beyond compare.
amen
Badfinger?
@Shyam Parmar Ok, I'll tell Pete & Tom...thx's
He was. I heard this first at college and it was sublime. Nilsson sang it like he really meant it and then I heard on his album "You're not the only cuddly toy that's ever been hurt by any boy." That was the flip-side of my experience at college and beyond. We have all been both places.
It really does. The scope of Harry’s performance is staggering.
Just turned 35 the other day. This reminds me of my dad. Our birthdays are a day apart. We used to jam out to this 33 years ago. 💗💗💗
Han de haber sido muy bonitos momentos 😊👍 que bien.
To my wonderful wife Chrissy, who passed on 2/19/21 from Chondrosarcoma(cancer of the cartilage) which was removed and gone for two years, then reappeared on her spinal cord. Inoperable. I’m shattered & broken, but I know we’ll be together again for eternity.I Love You!
Lost my Sweetcorn of 33 years to cancer, What I am doing now is not living. I Pray for our reunion in the next Life!

I'm So Sorry Mike. My Heart Goes Out To You. May She Rest In Peace.

So very sorry for your loss.
The emotion in his voice kicks my ass every time.
This song breaks me every time I hear it. After all these years it still hits me so hard. Love it.
I'm 58 years old and I've never forgotten this song or the artist.
Music like this unites us all 🙏
One of the best songs ever recorded.
83 and still blown away by this song and Harry. First heard him sing at the movies, Midnight Cowboy, and been caught ever since. Guess it's my old Hungarian heart.
One of the most beautiful and heartfelt songs ever recorded and at the same time one of the saddest. Anyone that has ever heard it and didn't think it could have been about them when they had experienced tragic personal loss has no soul.
