No one has sung and no one will sing this beautiful song the way Harry Nilsson sang it, simply the best version! What a voice! Thank you Harry for this beauty, wherever you are.
I first heard this when Badfinger did it in the 70s. Harry was a genius with a great vocal range and it's really sad how he drank himself to death. Great artists often have awful demons.
@@tahirakathleen5065 Peter Ham the man who originally wrote this song and lead singer of Badfinger committed suicide when his manager screwed him out of many record deals and money and lost it all.
All those minor chords get me everytime. It will be 50 years next year since it went to number one but everytime i hear it the hairs on my neck stand up. Such raw emotion on such a sad but haunting song.
The history of this song is even more haunting. Perhaps the best known song from the 2 main songwriters from the ill fated group, Badfinger, Pete Ham and Tom Evans both took their own lives. Ah, what might have been.
Breathtakingly beautiful song causes a visceral reaction every time I hear it...memories of a turbulent time in my life in early '70s wrenches my heart.

Rest in peace Christopher Richard Anderson. A loved father. The best dad. This was his favorite song. Today he is turning 51. And died at the age of 49 years old. I hope he is happy somewhere. Still come to this song and listen to it during tough times :).

Who didn't love Harry Nilsson? Short life but he did leave his immortality mark. Watched an wonderful interview with his son Zack a few days ago. Zack is battling stage 4 advanced colon cancer. What a great son Harry produced. Praying for Zack
Not for me. My two first exes cheated on me and I haven't been in love since. This was 12 years ago. I've "tried" to fall in love again but I just cant. I just feel nothing anymore. I think it is because I repeated everyday for years that "I should not care", "humans are like animals, cheating is in our nature". And it's a double edged sword. At one point, I feel free from any emotional pain. But at the same time, I want to have children, a wife. But its too long time. I think I'll have to be alone. Think about this, dont cheat. Be a better person and give the other one dignity and leave before you jump in bed with others. It's not hard. It's only your ego and that you are afraid the new one will ditch you. If you ever think about fooling around with someone else, leave your current partner because if you are attracted to someone else, then your love for your current love, is not love. So save your own time too
I'm 74, the younger generation doesn't understand a lot more than old music. I hope that none of them get old and forgotten like many from my generation. Tim M. 7/3/2022
You know what music is don't let anyone tell you different. 60s 70s IS the best music ever. I was a teenager in the 70s. And everyday I wish I could go back and just stay there. What a great time to be a teenager. You know good music try and make something from it cause you have a good ear for music.
I think this is one of the best vocal performances ever recorded. Often imitated, very rarely duplicated. It's not enough to whine and scream...you gotta feel it. A difference lost on a lotta singers today.
This is just music at the highest level could be . No one sing like this anymore: with such sadness, pain and emotion. You can feel harry pain and sarrow when you hear him sing . This kind of songs and performances are so rare, we need to keep them and make sure they will live on forever. Thank you harry, you really made me cry .
I'm 60+ my mom died when I was 12 of breast cancer I played this song as she drifted off to heaven it still to this day is my all time favorite song I still cry every time I play it absolutely beautiful song❤
@peterjarratt8823 And Thanks to George Harrison for supporting Badfinger, and then signing them to the ‘Apple’ label… until they were lost in the chaotic reorganization meant to trim losses from other musicians who were a personal friend with one or more of the Beatles, merely a backup singer, or a supporting act, and so Badfinger lost their direction, couldn’t find a proper manager, and then fell into financial disarray! Losing Pete Ham at such a young age was a tragedy, especially with such a monumental body of work that still resonates today! He was only 27 when he committed suicide, so this should make him a member of the “27 Club”, but his name doesn’t appear on the list (Kurt Cobain also took his own life and he’s at the top of the list)!!
I’m 17 and I wish anyone else my age would appreciate music like this. Anyone I show it to instantly realises it way better than the drivel they’d be listening to otherwise
I'm 28, and I know it might sound insane but honestly, 17 feels like a day ago to me. Time is weird like that. I discovered this song when I was 17 as well in the Film The Rules Of Attraction. I highly recommend it. The trailer is shit so don't watch it. If you like American Psycho at all, it is by the same author.
What an absolutely devastating song. It’s amazing how simple the lyrics are. How powerful. One of the most primally evocative chorus lyrics of all time.
83 and still blown away by this song and Harry. First heard him sing at the movies, Midnight Cowboy, and been caught ever since. Guess it's my old Hungarian heart.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I have spent most of my 56 years somewhat in a state of denial about how much pain I carry with me. It’s songs like this that remind me how important it is for me to stop and grieve my losses.
I've listened to this song awhile back ,I recently lost my beautiful bride to cancer she turned and gave me her final look at me and smiled .this song is what I went thru. Thank you Harry nilsson.
When I met my wife, she didn’t want me around her, so I found this song and let her listen to this words…, well, it worked so well that in 1972 we got married and today, 71 years later, we are still happily married and our time together is still a blast, so thank to Nilsson my life has been a blast…!!!
congrats and I'll join you in the fact we met in 1973. This song together with 10cc I'm not in Love were "our" songs. 50 years later, we're still here and loving life!
Many versions. Harry Nilsson singing from the heart is the finest. . Thanks and recognition to the late Peter Ham ( Badfinger) for writing such moving lyrics.
Pete Ham wrote the verse for a song and couldn't come up with a strong chorus. Tom Evans had written the chorus for a song but couldn't come up with a strong verse. They decided to Frankenstein the two parts together and there you have it. Their version is real good but Nilsson (and his producers) took it to the moon.

He was. I heard this first at college and it was sublime. Nilsson sang it like he really meant it and then I heard on his album "You're not the only cuddly toy that's ever been hurt by any boy." That was the flip-side of my experience at college and beyond. We have all been both places.

He recorded this in one take, all the way through, no edits. And he only ever performed it live once, ten years later with Ringo Starr. It may thus be the case that he only ever sung it through twice in his life!
I just turned on my television and it was on HBO from last night. There was a movie on titled "The Farewell" The credits were rolling and the song was being sung in Chinese and it stopped me in my tracks. It was so beautiful and then the last part was in English. gone
I’d like to think there’s a heaven and that Harry is up there still singing this song, it’s a song that will never die.
I first heard this when Badfinger did it in the 70s. Harry was a genius with a great vocal range and it's really sad how he drank himself to death. Great artists often have awful demons.
And he recorded it in ONE take.

Gorgeus
The history of this song is even more haunting. Perhaps the best known song from the 2 main songwriters from the ill fated group, Badfinger, Pete Ham and Tom Evans both took their own lives. Ah, what might have been.
Aren't they, mainly, major chords? (I could be wrong, though) :)
Breathtakingly beautiful song causes a visceral reaction every time I hear it...memories of a turbulent time in my life in early '70s wrenches my heart.

It doesn't matter how long you've been "over it", this song brings back the hurt.
Yes it brings it all back. It was cold and rainy and the sound of his car as he drove away
amen
So true
Right back to the start the heartache never ends
So save your own time too
Happy Heavenly 83rd Birthday Harry Nilsson June 15 1941 - January 15 1994

And Thanks to George Harrison for supporting Badfinger, and then signing them to the ‘Apple’ label… until they were lost in the chaotic reorganization meant to trim losses from other musicians who were a personal friend with one or more of the Beatles, merely a backup singer, or a supporting act, and so Badfinger lost their direction, couldn’t find a proper manager, and then fell into financial disarray!

Many versions. Harry Nilsson singing from the heart is the finest. . Thanks and recognition to the late Peter Ham ( Badfinger) for writing such moving lyrics.
harry nilson's cover is simply beautiful, it's a shame that badfinger had such a nefarious manager
Tom Evans also helped with the lyrics.
Not just Badfinger & Harry Nilsson, another version in Without You is Air Supply & famous song for all time is Mariah Carey
Ham deserved the credit for this song, but it's hard to believe that he could write such moving lyrics and then perform it with no passion whatsoever.
I'm 22. This is one of the best songs ever made. His voice...man, what a powerful performance. His voice is what really sells the song.
