    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Dr. Grant (Sam Neill) and the remaining survivors are trapped in a turf battle between a T-Rex and the ferocious Spinosaurus.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Director Joe Johnston takes over the creative reins from Steven Spielberg for this third installment in the thriller franchise. Sam Neill returns as Dr. Alan Grant, a scientist who's tricked by wealthy couple Paul and Amanda Kirby (William H. Macy and Tea Leoni) into a fly-over of Isla Sorna. The object of their sightseeing tour is one of the Costa Rican islands populated by ferocious, genetically bred dinosaurs and the "site B" setting of Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World (1997). After their plane crash-lands, it's revealed that the Kirbys are actually seeking their teenage son, lost on the island after a paragliding accident. Trapped on Isla Sorna, Grant and his companions discover some painful truths the hard way. Among their discoveries: some of the scaly monsters possess more advanced communicative abilities than previously believed, the dreaded Tyrannosaurus Rex has a larger and more lethal competitor, and flying Pteranodons pose an even graver threat than some of their land-locked brethren. Jurassic Park III is the first in the series not to be based upon a novel by original author Michael Crichton.

    A lot of things I really liked about this scene.
    1. How cool is it to see two titans going at each other? Especially without the human element for a brief period, really captures just how larger and terrifying these creatures are.
    2. I like how each movie created something scarier than it’s predecessors. 1st movie we had the single Rex. 2nd movie we had two rexes and now in the third we have a new apex predator capable of killing something that was supplanted into our minds as “invincible”
    3. What truly sacred me about this fight was the fact that the spino snapped it’s neck, which displays a level of intelligence which is scarier than just a monster of brute fource.
    4. I think it’s true for most people but watching the Rex lose is sad. It’s had a special place in our hearts from the first two movies and I think it’s impressive for a movie to make you feel emotion for a monster that otherwise terrorized us in our youth.
    I’m sure these even more that could be said about this scene too.

    • @davidsong8497
      @davidsong8497 Год назад +13

      Good points, but the fight choreography in this scene is still blatantly stupid. Not the quality of the CGI or the sound effects, but how things played out. T-Rex is estimated to have the highest bite force of any terrestrial predator, plus heavy jaws and robust teeth meant to absorb tremendous pressure. It gets its jaws around Spinosaurus' neck in about 5 seconds...only for the Spinosaurus to shake it off? No way. That Spinosaurus would have needed Godzilla DNA to be that durable.
      Spinosaurus had a much more slender skull and jaws, plus conical teeth ideally suited to gripping fish (not large animals), yet its bite was depicted as more deadly as it snapped the T-Rex's neck. That's a fantasy not even remotely grounded in paleontology.
      Moreover, you mentioned how the neck snap could represent higher intelligence within the Spinosaurus. Again, that is false as T-Rex's brain cavity was proportionally much larger than Spinosaurus, which means it most likely was the smarter animal.
      Honestly, I think the Spinosaurus is very cool in its own right, and I understand narratively why the writers wanted to up the ante by having one kill a dinosaur that audiences already knew. But there were ways to do that which do not involve utterly discarding paleontological consensus.
      I understand this is just fiction, and my sentimental feelings about the T-Rex means I will always hate this scene. However, a franchise catering to dinosaur fans should have had much more respect for the dino knowledge possessed by those fans. Based on skeletal evidence, T-Rex was the most dominant land-based predator we've ever found. This movie makes it come across as a very average theropod.

    • @bigc5090
      @bigc5090 Год назад +12

      @davidsong8497 from what I've heard, this is pretty accurate for what they thought the Spinosaurus was at the time, so 2001. They probably just thought, "yeah its bigger so it could definitely kill a T-Rex"
      Of course, as it turned out, they really didn't know too much about the T-Rex in 2001 either lol

    • @davidsong8497
      @davidsong8497 Год назад +7

      @@bigc5090 Fair enough. Like I said though, my problem is mainly with how the Spinosaurus won. Even back in 2001, I'm pretty sure they had evidence of T-Rex's likely massive bite force due to how the skull and teeth are shaped, and it's utterly ridiculous to have any animal shake off a direct neck bite. The fact that Rex got its jaws around Spino's neck in the first 5 seconds and still lost is, as others have said, downright disrespectful.
      Outside of that, I'm okay with a fictional Spinosaurus that was more intelligent, and they didn't know at the time how adapted it was for life in water. Spinosaurus is huge and could maybe have beat T-Rex...just not the way it did in this movie.

    • @bigc5090
      @bigc5090 Год назад +3

      @@davidsong8497 for sure, they were definitely doing the old movie trope of "to show that the new villain is a threat, have him kill a villain we already know" I feel like this was when they thought the T-Rex was just a scavenger that couldn't hunt anything, not sure if they knew how strong the bite force was back then though
      Spinosaurus is my favorite dinosaur but I know it wouldn't stand a chance against a T-Rex, on land at least

  • @fang609

    Looking back at this fight it really feels real compared to ones later in the series. The fact that theres no big music,how their shacking the the enviroment around them with leaves falling,the birds fleeing away, how you really feel the camera angle really showing how these are massive heavy and powerful animals,and in general the fight been a quick but brutal desplay of dominance like most fights in nature.

    • @jasonalcatraz5817
      @jasonalcatraz5817 3 года назад +192

      In total this fight lasts less than a minute and consists of about four or so moves from each competitor
      T-Rex bites Spino, drags it around a bit
      Spino breaks free
      T-Rex lunges, bites around the spine of spino
      Spino claws T-Rex to break free
      T-Rex charges spino head first
      Spino recovers quickly and bites down on T-Rex neck, then breaks it.
      Compare that to the fight between the Indominous Rex and T-Rex/Raptor which lasts like 12 minutes and feels more like a smol scale Kaiju fight than animals trying to kill one another.

      Yes. In Jurassic World: Dominion, the battle of Giganotosaurus and Tyrannosaurus is even faster (at least in the prologue, as there will likely be another one in the present), and the director said that it is in nature. I just don't understand how the battle Indominus vs Tyrannosaurus took so long. Or was it not the same director? If so, it was convenient for the final fight to take a while. The same will probably happen with Tyrannosaurus vs Giganotosaurus at the end of the movie.

    When I was watching this movie as a kid I thought the Spinosaurus was cool, not as cool as the T Rex of course, but that all changed with this scene. The fact that the Spinosaurus was able to kill it blew ny mind. What a way to establish how dangerous the Spinosaurus is.

      It makes sense. Spino is just as big as a rex, but much more flexible. Its able to swim in water, rival big dinosaurs with its size and enough power to do so.

      It may be the bigger animal but the T-Rex has a stronger bite force, more stronger, and more intelligent than the Spinosaurus and there are less chances that a Spinosaurus could defeat the T-Rex

    • @LittleKitten396
      @LittleKitten396 3 года назад +169

      0:32 The Spinosaurus should have lost the fight. The T-rex has the stronger bite force and the Spinosaurus the thinner neck out of the two.
      The bite from T-rex should have damaged _something_ important. The Spinosaurus would have a hard time trying to snap the neck of a T-rex considering that T-rexes have a large head and therefore require a large neck for support.

      I’ve always had the thought that the T-Rex in this scene wasn’t an adult. But then again I’m not sure if that’s accurate or not. Jaw force for the T-Rex is amazing and I found it odd on how it didn’t damage Spino.
      [edit] I would also like to point out, that this Spino wasn’t even the exactly accurate to its ancestor encounter part. The bite force of Rex in this scene seemed to place deep force into Spino’s neck yet didn’t seem too impactful, [besides the bite marks] and walked it off like nothing happened at that moment. My guess is IGEN definitely placed more into this Dino than we thought, and it could’ve been the first hybrid before JW came up with theirs. So basically, yes our boi Rex here didn’t have a fair fight.. and I suppose we could also argue he wasn’t ready for the battle anyways due the group attracting him out while he was eating.

      T-Rex would have won in reality. They are just making the Spinosaurus seem stronger for movie thrills just because it was physically bigger. The T-Rex had a bite 3 times stronger than the Spinosaurus so it would have been curtains when the T-Rex bit it on the neck.

    0:42 compies running in the distance after the spinosaurus balances itself
    0:46 spinosaurus bites at the Rexes tail drawing blood
    0:46 if you look really closely at the spinosaurus‘ upper leg you can see the scarred wounds of where it was slammed against a tree
    0:47 you can see the gashes on the Rexes belly from the claws of the spinosaurus

      Erik Montesinos the real life Spinosaurus was able to kill a Sarcosuchus (wit a bite force stronger than Trex) and a Carcaradontasaurus (which was bigger than a Trex) only thing Trex had going for him was his bite if Spino can claw it in the eye or cut where the important parts are before trex can get a lethal bite on him then then its a wrap

      snake gamer first of all trex wasn't a scavenger(tho it might scavenge a body here and there if it finds one or takes it from something else) it was more of a predator and a body built for fighting: secondly the trex was a fast runner but its body prevents it from going more than 10 minutes max long enough to catch something: thirdly spinosaurus might be on all 4 and actually it might be able to walk on 4 and 2 legs but it was never proven
