No, sixth mans are never glorified. There’s other sixth man type players with comparable numbers but we praise Manu because he’s a winner and clutch. But we all know he’s not the main guy. That would be Tim.
It is amazing to see how good he was at EVERY facet of the game. Nowadays players get praised for being good at two things (“he can shoot AND defend!”), and certainly the league has had specialists throughout (Rodman, for instance), but there was a time where players were prepared to be good overall. Manu is a great example of that: he was the epitome of what a SG should be coming from an era when that position was supposed to be the jack-of-all-trades on a team. Couple with his tenacity and resolve, it usually goes unmentioned how versatile he was. Certainly his crazy plays (a shot or pass) get all the attention but it was just his overall game: precise passes (where a player WOULD be), little switches to get defenders off balance, the gambles yet considered timing of steals, the angles he would approach blocking to minimize the chance of fouls, his excellent ball handling, his read of plays and the court, etc. even smaller things like his spectacular use of speed variations within a single sequence to keep defenders guessing. How many players nowadays grab a ball and simply think they need to run fast no matter what? The bats, the crazy plays, and passes will be the most remembered, but for anyone wanting to play bball well they could not go wrong studying this guy in detail. (Edited for typos and clarity)
Your views made me feel convinced that manu made pops greatness and not the other way around. Tim anyway said that in an interview, as pops used to change players, manu change him instead.
The most notable thing is if you see tbe clock and the score every time he get a basket you will notice that, more often that not, is when the score is tight and the quarter is in the last minutes of 3 or 4. That is why he is a truly hall of famer.
Good point dude. That is almost never bringed to the table. Manus points and minutes where always important. Popovich used Manu when the game was rough or when the team was lost in the court. Manu is a TRUE LEYEND.
He is a star coming off the bench, a bench player does not stay in the game during crucial moments. He is always in the end game situations especially clutch moments
Manu's the only old player I've seen that never step down or change his game just because of his age. Guys like Ray Allen or Vince Carter change their game as they get older but not Manu. He's always aggressive and attacking the rim even though he's not that young anymore
He was one of the all time greatest Spurs players to ever play , sad that he retired today but , San Antonio will retire his jersey one day in the At&T Center .. also best 6th man to ever play as well
I think he was better than Timmy in all honesty. Unpopular opinion here, but Timmy was allowed to shine as a result of having guys like Manu around him. Manu on the other hand could do it all himself. Kinda sad he never started as he was clearly a superstar level player.

I wouldn't say unpredictable....I'd say most Dynamic player. He did it all...dunk, lay up, steal, 3 pointer...
