1983?? The design of that thing is WAY ahead of its time! That's honestly impressive. Remember what factory car stereos sounded like in the 80s? For $80, this thing would have actually made a distinct difference with the kind of music most people were listening to at the time. Major Wife Approval Factor as well, for folks that are into that sort of thing. Easy to hide away, not overbearing. Really cool piece of lost history there!

I agree, that was way ahead of its time. my first thought when i saw it was the bose wave radio. i bet you were the cool kid on the block with the 8 track radio if you had that sub. I kinda want one, even though I have 2 8's and a 10 in my truck. lol

@rhkips giving me flashbacks to when I first got my 1988 f150. Had the original speakers in it and I took them out and sold them in the garage sale. They sounded absolutely terrible. Upgraded to cheap Walmart speakers that beat factory into the ground

@@rhkips big D!!! List history!??? Guy ,please do a bit about Hollywood sound labs.
Hollywood invented the extended pole ,bumped back plate. Not kicker !!!
Hollywood has the first 1 ohm amps. Hollywood has the first vacuum formed cones. Fiberglass kevlar cones? Not digital designs. It was Hollywoods reference woofers in 1993. First dual 6 ohm subs. Oh ,I forgot to mention: Hollywood sound labs manufactured over 50 %0of the marketplace. Mtx, Rockford, velodyne ,boss, rainbow and many more major name brands ... Hollywood sound Labs manufactured OEM, and under their own name branded Hollywood sound labs, audio gods, Hollywood digital, excursion brands. ..0h ,they also had the first bass tubes !!! And to this day their designs are copied and patients stolen.

So to Get to the 4 Real / I was sporting a Mustang AM FM with a cassette player that had NO rewind function . Also had a set SPARK-O-MATIC 6in round doubles in the doors and 6in ovals in the back . I also had a China made 10 lever equalizer that flashed 2 green pulse bars with the beats . I was SO COOL . Those speaker lasted about a season and crumbled in the California sun . Impressed as to how much effort was put into "trying" to make the sub/enclosure as realistic as possible. The magnet was impressive too. Funny the tuning was around 140Hz, but the filter buttons were at or below it! LOL. Surprised that even with those 2 large amp chips, probably operating in bootstrap mode only did around 10 watts rms into 4 ohms. I was hoping to see the massive power draw using your Fluke remote "amp clamp"! You would have had to wrap the power wire around the clamp twice to attempt to fool the ammeter to get it off zero amps! LOL. That was good.

I recently installed the 6 x 3 pioneer wx010 powered sub in my car, and was floored at how much bass that tiny unit put out. It pulls so little power that the instructions (and crutchfield confirmed) that you are to power it via fuse tap.
Fits under the dash, easiest install ever. I had no idea that small subs were a thing back in the day.

Here's the thing. Yeah, it was 180$ on Amazon. There's a whole pile of combo amp and low profile subs available for 50$ less, and larger, and probably louder.
But, I'm not amplifying my doors and rear deck. I put decent JBL speakers that took lower RMS in, just because I wasn't interested in going all out with a system again.
The pioneer unit is expensive, but it's also adding just enough more low range and sound quality, and isn't drowning everything else out. So in my case, it was a really great option to finish out upgrading sound.
I'm saying all this as someone who's had a couple really nice, loud, multi amp systems over the years and generally have high standards for the SQ aspect.

    Loved those.
You had to pick through them very carefully 'cause there was plenty of dross in it. I had decent luck really. Probably the best operating item was a 15" dual-wound home subwoofer with an adequate speaker, crossover and a decent enclosure. Not audiophile grade but it filled my teenage bedroom plenty well to rattle shelves and be heard outside in the back yard with my window closed.
Today I still have a few items in storage but I'd doubt they are of any use.

The big audio magazines that I got back in the mid 80's was Radio Shack, Crutchfield, JC Whitney and of course DAK! The 80's was a really incredible time for audio. Even cheap stuff was really expensive! but it was almost all innovative. What a great time to be a teenager!

I remember in either 86 or 87 I was getting tons of pyramid goodies from a black and white catalog that I somehow got a hold of from a place called the wholesale House in Hicksville Ohio

I’ve never heard of that catalog but just looked it up and that was JC Whitney to I guess those outside of the Chicago area?

@wal2 pretty much. The company had several names throughout the years and even through the 80s they still used both names. I think in the late 90s they dropped the Warshawsky name when they closed the original storefront in Chicago.

i remember these, they're pretty good mini sub box if your looking to have a sound system but in a small scale if you have a small car or truck with limited space. i install these on my friend el camino which was a nice set up. two 6x9 with build in tweakers by kenwood, two kenwood 5inch speakers and a pair of these mini sub box behind the car seat.

Oh my... that DAK catalog takes me back. My dad and uncle would order stuff from there. I liked reading the founder's stories on product evaluation. I think I bought something for my car in 1984.

LMAO exploding car got me good one man good one great video. By the way, you won’t believe this, but my father found me one of those exact systems new in box practically with a whole bunch of stuff from Salvation Army and I was coming back in the 90s when I just started college. Had the matching booster and everything. I always thought it was a novel and I may still have it around the house. I don’t know. I never took it too seriously, I did hook a small boss amp up to it one time just for laughs and giggles

He was the house DJ at one of our first Orlando hip hop clubs called electric avenue in 1986 or so... I don't think he had founded his company yet which was called cheetah records... But the hip hop scene in Orlando was so small back then so that made it a really cool time because we all kind of knew each other

For how old that thing is, I knew that the surround was either going to be rotted or break apart as soon as it played. 25 watts is low enough and when I saw that the dyno only said 8, I couldn’t hold my breath anymore from laughing.
Not even Dick Riculous could say anything about it. Lol

Surprisingly enough I have a Dodge 6x9 that's supposedly 15`w 4ohms and it's indestructible for my receivers. I've put it through 100w and it still won't blow.

It's impressive what Sony did with their DSX GS series headunits with built in amps. They're rated at 100watts max X4 and 45 watts RMS X4 but hit 56 watts X4 on each channel at 4 ohms.

Nostalgic factor from the 80’s is a 8/10. Some dancing LEDs would have definitely made it 10/10. I’m sure a modern class D amplifier with modern high excursion mini-woofer works blow this out of the water but you have to remember this in the context of early 80s

  • @christopherwilliams2930
    @christopherwilliams2930 Месяц назад

Honestly. It probably had a little better bass response back when in 83 when the rubber wasn't disintegrated. You should put a brand new mini sub in the existing box but also put thinner better wave blocking foam glued to all the inside walls giving the maximum amount of air passage travel for the sub to breathe. And put a little strip of foam insulation around the hole the sub goes into to rule out any unwanted air leaks.

I had one similar to these back in the day. But it was 250 watts and had a 6.5" woofer before they were cool. Lol. It was called a "Power Mouse" 🐀🐀🐀. It was made with wood instead of plastic though. And had a nice t-line style box with the amp and everything built in. Had led lights that flashed like a vu meter. Lol.
