aw man... watching you feels like watching Furze in the beginning.... here's to you having lots of cool crazy projects and a massive shop with a bunch of insane tools, if that sort of thing is your bag.
For this task, you'll need a proper 3-phase motor of several horsepower to ensure that under cyclical load your motor does not bog down meaning it doesn't slow down. Currently you have a distortion floor probably 90% depending on frequency. This is purely out of the fact that your motor is unable to continue spinning at full rate ( which it is not in the first place even without a load). Keep working at it my friend, then building these for better part of 15 years or something close to it. However when thigpen finally got it all worked out perfectly put it towards a patent that changed everything he did an excellent job worked out the true RPM cycles that were required etc etc. If you ever get the chance try one of his units out there damn well built in very on point within its design. Completing the frequency band like that would be amazing for a gaming room/simpit, add that depth of feeling the explosions or jet engine rumbles in the lower frequencies with a high fidelity rotary sub would be awesome!! Keep up the great work!!
And with a little signal processing it could be fed its signal slightly ahead of everything else, to help cancel out the latency responding to the input.
Hell yeah! Great video. For anyone wanting to make one of these, Parts Express has an 8" capless woofer on clearance for super cheap. Excursion doesn't matter since if you want it louder, just make the fan turn faster. Congrats on the engagement too!
Fan speed has the ill effect of being loud. A blade design that is built for static pressure would be better then speed and let's the blades turn better.
Hello friend. I am actually a rotary subwoofer scientist myself. I have some advice to help you on your rotary subwoofer journey. The music you want to "re-bass" for the rotary subwoofer needs to have bass for the rotary sub that is more like a "supernatural effect" than actual bass. When you only re-bass the music with bass and octave lower than bass in the music, it does sound pretty cool, but there is still more rotary sub application and potential than just that. Keep up the good work!

That way you can just play regular music on it but the really low bass drops will make you feel like the walls will collapse!

Thank you mate. Some valuable insight! I was able to replicate the sound quality you have achieved here by carefully placing a subwoofer in my washing machine, winding up one of the levelling feet and setting it to 600 rpm spin cycle.

Can't imagine its to difficult to code something within python that using an Virtual Audio cable and an available aux you could hook the rotary sub to run off the Virtual audio cable on your computer that only targets frequency's below 30hz. Whilst everything else runs off the normal audio output on your computer. So you can still have all the normal frequency's 30Hz -24000Hz then have the absolute meme of the rotary sub just attacking everything else below. Sounds like a really good video idea. Would be an interesting watch. most likely isn't the whole reason on the idea of creating a rotary sub Haha! Loved the video man keep it up!
doesn't need to be anywhere near as custom as that, any off the shelf DSP or even an analogue crossover could get that sorted, he should definitely run the more capable version with a full hifi though

It's not a very good fan actually. It spends half of its time blowing in reverse, so no air actually moves beyond one wavelength of the sound its making.

Infrasound in the 17-19Hz range can cause feelings of unease, sorrow, and revulsion, and even cause the optic nerve to misfire resulting in hallucinations. Fun stuff if you hate your neighbors.
theres all this mystery about infrasound but with the incredibly obvious amount of rattling you get everywhere you are going to figure out what is going on pretty quickly besides that, the symptoms you list are merely rumors with evidence still missing. studies have explored these effects but remain inconclusive. if these effects are real, they are weak enough to not be a concern at inaudible levels of infrasound (considering rattling).

the video on the IB subs got me caught on the idea of putting one in the door between my living room and bedroom. bought an old wood door and tested it with two cheap 9 inch subs. got decent results, but they didnt really have enough displacement for decent volume below 30 hz. so off to harvest some cheap drivers out of bottom of the barrel PA speakers. Its now got 4x 12 Inch cheapo drivers and a properly stiff wood door, sealed with the thickest window seals i could get. probably one of the cheapest ways to get to 20hz. id say it sounds pretty good? but i have no real way of measuring it at the moment. so i really dont know how well this setup actually does. Keep up these videos. the janky "keep doing it until something works" attitude is honestly the main thing that convinced me to try experimenting too!

This is amazing. I'd probably make my own speaker driver though. Have it be magnet core with open center for the shaft and have the coil on the outside. That way you can make a heftier coil and use the permanent magnet to directly drive the adjustment of the roters.

Always fun to see folks give a go at a DIY version of the Thigpen Rotary Woofer. It certainly is a novel concept, just impossible to get without tremendous noise issues.
This is absolutely insane! On the "budget" idea, AC dimmer switches/knobs make really good analog speed controls far more granular than a "3 - 2 - 1" fan switch. I helped my little bro build a coal forge with an old christmas inflatable blower with this trick! Wire up a dual outlet and dimmer in a dual gang junction box for an input/output standalone speed controller, or wire it internally for a chassis mount solution!

This is amazing. I'd probably make my own speaker driver though. Have it be magnet core with open center for the shaft and have the coil on the outside. That way you can make a heftier coil and use the permanent magnet to directly drive the adjustment of the roters.

On the "budget" idea, AC dimmer switches/knobs make really good analog speed controls far more granular than a "3 - 2 - 1" fan switch. I helped my little bro build a coal forge with an old christmas inflatable blower with this trick! Wire up a dual outlet and dimmer in a dual gang junction box for an input/output standalone speed controller, or wire it internally for a chassis mount solution!
