"Better tools" bang bang bang with a 2x4 and hammer LOL.
lol "They have the better tools" as the guy smacks a hammer on a 2x4 😄
@@shitshowsupervisor69 ahhh wait a minute... I just listened to it again. Pretty sure Sam was making a wisecrack. I thought he was being serious at first LOL
If you don't happen to have a hammer & 2x4, then yes, they do have better tools.
Your grit in the face of the unexpected, paired with a knack for keeping a light and humorous attitude in tough situations, is downright inspiring. Your knack for figuring things out on the fly, all while sharing your sailboat journey around the world through videos that are both educational and entertaining, makes your maritime narration a bona fide adventure. Despite your American accent that gives a Froggy like me a run for my money, your approach stays fresh and far from the clichés of reality TV or video reality, showcasing your one-of-a-kind nature
Spot on. ❤ from Australia.
Spot on from Fiji😊
Spot on!! From Martinique
He really is remarkable
Totally agree! Love you upbeat attitude and can-do spirit!
50 years ago I was in the same boatyard helping my parents work on their boat. I was 10 years old. Happy memories.
Hey Sam, you are sailing under the Montego Bay convention that regulates international maritime traffic. You are flying a US flag. If you don't need a license to sail your boat under US regulation, you don't need a licence to sail in Greece, which follows the montego Bay convention. Plus , I have been sailing in Greece for 20 years. I was asked my licence only once, which I did not have with me then... and... no problem. I mentioned the convention and the greek port police desisted immediately
Rolly Tasker sails were originally from Perth in Western Australia; Rolly himself helped me with my first boat, he was a local legend in sailing circles and personally made very good sails, and I am sure the Thailand-made sails would live up to his proud name and workmanship
Thanks for the info! They are really well made.
Ihave a set. Theyre bullet proof.@@samholmessailing
Pickled Herring looking dapper with her new swag.
What make/model is she?
@@3-DtimeCosmology I believe a Cape Dory 28 but I'm no yachty.
What a cool historic place to haul her out at! You've sailed a long way,Sam!
At at at at at!
Glad to see the lads in Malta got you sorted out. Another great video update Sam. Thanks for sharing!
That solenoid wire looks sketchy, Sam. Look. That starter relay draws a lotta current so you should place a starter relay between it and you're battery just to be on the safe side. The wires from the battery to the relay and the wire from the relay to the starter relay should be on the beefy side. But the wire from the battery to the starter button and relay can be pretty light.
Please take off the collar anode, so you can push that shaft back by~3 inches. Then install a prop nut anode. This way your propeller won`t hit the rudder. Huge fan from Tahiti, i am a marine diesel mechanic. Thank you for the great videos!
I found the E propulsion very poorly made mind broke after 3 times plus 1 kW is 1.34 hp NOT 3hp which they claim .. May feel 3hp on a lake, BUT in the sea, you will go backwards like I did...
Love your videos safe journey
Looking at thar prop shaft assembly I'm thinking that that shaft should be cut down an inch or two. The prop should really be centered in that rudder/prop window. That would certainly give you more room to move the rudder by increasing it's range of limits. Have the marina straighten out the prop as best they can and keep it as a spare.
Now those sound like good ideas.
Sam, saw your message about RUclips not liking something of yours. Keep your head up and don't understand Google, think they are out of control sometimes. You are one of the only truly sailing channels. I think the rest are not really into sailing. Keep up the great work . Great to see you in Europe.
The 'around town' piece at the end was a really great feature of this vid. Perhaps more of this whenever you 'land' in these far away places. Thank you!
I can't be the only one that wants to see you do stuff, am I? You tell us you are going to do something, then you do it off camera, then show us you did it. I would really like to see you do the things. Like retrieving that shaft thing with the pole would have been interesting and fun to watch... Just my $0.02. Thanks for sharing part of your life with us!
Loved seeing the giraffe! Malta looks pretty sweet! Got to say hoisting the main on the hard on stands…bold move sir!!!
Thanks! love your vids. Love the adventure.
Mentioned boating license. I'm an American living in Spain. I ended up going to Gibraltar and doing a course through RYA. After I got a Day skipper license I applied for an International certificate of competence (ICC). With your certificate from your course you might qualify and all Europe countries except it.
Loose-footed sails are great but it makes your outhaul do more work,. I had to modify my outhaul with a small block at the clew to manage the extra load.
Awesome repair and sails!!
Nice work dude. When you are coming to Finland?
What makes you to do this?
Thanks. I sailed to Finland last year. Here is the video

@@samholmessailingthank you so very much. Did Baltic sea makes you any difference or what?
Good job on the outboard bracket!
I assume you have got the main recut by now, but the easiest fix from what I can tell is to just cut 150mm off the bottom. Shorten the foot at the same time. Except the thread lines out of the clew won't be as designed. You are now going to get a really good geometry lesson. Rolly Tasker are great sailmakers but they can only work with the numbers sent to them.
Monday morning qb here but wouldn’t the boat builder have the measurements for sails to give the sailmaker?
hey man just wanted to say I really appreciate your videos. keep on sailin, Sam!
Good for you for putting an outboard bracket on the stern . They may not look great but when you're boat is a work boat like yours you have to be prepared. I think the electric sail boats could use then. It sure helped you on the Bayfield. Love your practical approach to sailing. That main sail has to be fixed and I love the way you are so chill about it. Thanks for the great videos.
I put an outboard bracket on my Westerly despite the vociferous objections of some in the community ("Your sail is your backup power!"). It's been a game changer for us as we sail in an area of constant, strong, currents where callouts for failed engines are common. It's saved our hide a couple of times now and gives so much more confidence when motoring through dangerous, narrow, channels!
Between you and Project Atticus, I've seen and learned more about Malta than I ever imagined. Thanks for sharing.
Loving the feel you’ve captured for Malta..that’s a pretty solid weeks progress ashore👍
I was in Malta back in the mid 80's when the firework factory on Rabat caught fire...crazy...they had to boat all the fire crews out from the main island.
Well done, Sam. I'm watching your video from the port of La Turballe in the Quiberon Bay, to the east of the Golfe du Morbihan but north from Saint-Nazaire. Your repairs seem to be just the ticket. For your main, you could set up a cunningham like on dinghies and tension your luff until you find a definitive solution. That's what I do on my little Beneteau Cabochard. You could also cut the head short and redo the grommet. Good luck.
Been awhile since Sam drilled holes in the boat.
Hi Sam love your down to sea approach and how fear is a matter of mindset. Indeed the Mediterranea is one of the few places on earth where one needs a boat license. Enjoy your new set of sea wheels. You are a real rolling stone walking on water. Sweet as, happy sailing.
Thanks. I didn’t end up needing it in greece but I did need it in Turkey so I was glad I got it.
@@samholmessailing hmm, is that so?!
@@Sp3ktral22 probably depends who you talk to
@@samholmessailing Ah yeah, I guess so Sam. Anyway, keep pushing on. That adventure is there to be forged! 😉
Sam, how wonderful is Malta and its people? I mean, if you're going to have a choice, where else in the Med are they going to be so knowledgeable and helpful?
Clean bottom , New sails > Wheres another boat , Looking good . Taska sails 1st class workmanship
New sails! Few things in life more exciting
*update* unless they don’t fit 😢
Informative video, sharing we always sail with one reef in the main, making life more comfortable onboard, using the jib as a throttle, presently heading from Azores to Madiera, Cabo Verde and Brazil.
Sails look great. Only part way through but ladder on the side is asking for trouble with sheets getting caught when they're thrashing around.
Amazing !! right at the start of the video showing Manoel Island, when I was a kid aged 10, I used to go catch all sorts of marine life with a net and keep them in a bucket right at that spot. My Dad had a job in oil in Libya in the late 60's early 70's and on his leave periods would rent an apartment in Gzira in Malta. We would fly out from the UK to meet him for summer holidays there.
Thanks for taking me to Malta Sam. Can’t wait to see the sales in action.
I never had much interest in sailing. But for some reason I could watch your videos all day. Thanks for the beautiful content & interesting information!
Thanks for all the work videos and repairs, always leaves me inspired to keep fixing up my sailboat
Great video. Malta looks out of this world. It's like traveling back in time before McDonalds, Starbuks and all the other crappy generic shops ruined every city in the entire world. wow. Can't wait to go there.
Visited Malta last year, it's a beautiful bunch of islands and lots of interesting places concentrated into a very small area. It's kinda funny how I recognised most of the places shown in the video (often even going "yep, that's _exactly_ where we were") and with those that I haven't, I still have at least a vague idea where they probably are. Malta, but especially Valetta and the Three Cities are a pretty small place.
Totally agree!
do you know the benefit of getting residency there? I presume this is to allow Sam to stay in EU for more than 90 days?
You can add a flicker to your mast crane to hold the back stay away from the main’s leech. This way you get to keep the extra sail area. Still kind of a pain at times.
Can you lower the boom/mast attachment (goose neck 19:03) 6 inches instead of cutting the sail? The boom looks pretty high.
I hope that this is possible? Give it a go Sam.
So cool how you always stay positive when you have mayor setbacks, like when your propeller got damaged or when you found out that the sail you ordered is too big. RESPECT
Seconded! Always so happy and casual. With that attitude you can do anything.
Very neat antique-ee looking boats there. Europe has so much history……
Sam"s the man. I don't care what they say I love the he hair cut.
Alex goes sailing, RUclipsr. His white plastic pad for his outboard motor broke off in half, just to warn you. Also I've heard similar parts bought from chandlers are far more expensive than Auto shops, like the relay, if you buy one.
You could try to rig a Cunningham so you don't need to do a full reef - maybe from the lowest shackle to the tack.
Nice scenery at the end, wow, I think I would have replaced the wire with a heavier gauge, not another one like it, thinking of current and potential heat build up, but cool fix on the prop and rudder, hopefully the sails perform well ✌️
Hey Sam nice job on the fiberglass very Sven esk beautiful sails enjoy The Maltese Pickle💚
Hello Sam, have you thought about setting up a Cunningham to tighten the mainsail and be able to use it without reefs?
Awesome Sam my favorite kind of video! Mechanics and improvements!
I just had my cutless bearing go out. 2 months after I had my boat out of the water. Had to crane it out again. If you have your shaft out already you should replace your cutless bearing.
Hi Sam for a great read and a new perspective on Malta and its history you might care to read < The Great Siege of Malta > cheers
Props to the boatyard Sam! Who are they, i didn't quite hear the name but they certainly need a call out for their fantastic flexible service.
They're called Manoel Island Boat Yard.
Its on a small island near Gzira Malta connected by a small bridge.
Got back to the UK from an amazing 16 day sail in Greece out of Kos at 02:00 this morning UK time and back in the office at 08:30! Just caught up on your posts - Oh! to be young again! 🥴 I sail for a day now or do a night sail and I need a damn week off work!!!!! 😂
Love that your drilling again
I've been missing the drill footage
Rolly Tasker Sails.., Just like RUclips's Sailing Yacht Florence! Those Sails are Top-Notch and Quality! Hooray!
The thing that strikes me about the settup on the prop is there seems to be a fair bit of spare space front and rear of the anode on the shaft and you can get narrower profile anodes that take even less room but carry the same amount of material this freeing more length. Which means which Leeds me to think of you wanted to you could easily take length off the front end true it up neatly and recut woodruff keyway thus moving the prop away from the rudder blade harm's way. I kind of think some mod has been done in past maybe replacement shaft that sets it to fat astern the prop should not be able to touch the rudder on any turn. Hope you can correct this. Mark
Thanks Sam!
Nice Sails! Can't wait to see them full of wind!
You’re my inspiration Sam! Keep sailing we love to see it! Hope to run into you one day!
Thanks!
Awesome video Sam. Got a great Any Gibb vibe at the end.
Likely not the first to comment about this, but you could do some fundraising by auctioning or raffling the old prop (if ya don't repair it). Lots of watchers would love some.Sam Holmes Sailing battle proven swag
Good to see the new prop and sails, fair winds...
Your videos are always a blast.
This is a really fun video Sam, thank you! with all the boat repairs it was like watching an episode of Sail Life with Mads
Sam, those sails are so badass! I am so excited for you I can’t even tell ya. Cannot wait to see what kind of performance you’re going to get out of those. Bet it’s gonna be HUGE! Your old sails were complete GARBAGE! So excellent man!
Welcome to Malta ❤❤
Thanks!
We had a divin dog ladder like that on our westsail 42. High sides. We slung a fender under it to stop the bumps, and when the ladder is down in the water we kept the fender under the legs to hold it off the hull. That way your toes can get on the steps, otherwise they lay against the hull. You didn’t have that issue. Beautiful sails in first grade materials. Good for many years.
Grazie.
Great job on the rudder mangle. That should do, but would recommend the next time you plan a haul out that you should do a complete inspection of the rudder and post structure inside the rudder. Not sure where you will be able to place a rudder stop inside the cockpit. Maybe a clamp on steel collar to the rudder stalk, but be aware any rudder stop located in an area where you are going to be is a hazard, a pinching hazard to be precise, and you do not want your fingers or toes to get squeezed by this!
I think the reason the ladder is on the stern is in case you fall overboard while sailing, you would grab onto the trailing safety line and pull yourself back to the boat and then climb into the boat using the ladder. Not sure if you would be able to pull yourself along to the side of the boat, just my 2 cents worth.
You can buy a "rope" ladder in a case to mount on the rail for emergencies. It has a tail to pull, and being soft doesn't affect docking.
dude, you are killing it
We all know the cliche about the best two days of boat ownership, but I’ll amend that. . .the best two days is when you get new sails and when you get a new prop! You got them both on the same day! Congrats!!
Another great video. Malta looks really cool. Can you explain the residency permit?
WELL NEEDED REPAIRS AND NEW SAILS .
10:15 ish Is that Journey Don't Stop Believing playing in the background. Malta and the Jersey Shore boat yards are similar.
Good of them to lend you their specialist tools to loosen the winch.
Hey Sam, can you please explain more about the Maltese ID card and how all of that works? Thank you!
I was stoked to see you dive into that water!!! Love these videos Sam!
Those are a nice set of sails Sam, please let us know if the boat is any faster with new sails.
And I love how you just knock out those boat projects
Thanks. I can say 100% they are faster. The best gains were in light wind and upwind angles.
@@samholmessailing thanks
Have you considered mounting the ladder to the track? Can use slides
Living the dream .... you rock Sam
Thanknyou for tgese amazing videos Sam and wishin you the best wid your repairs.
I'm really happy to hear you found a way to sort out a residency, that should make some things easier. You still technically fall under 90/180 for the rest of Schengen, though, don't you?
I like the ePropulsion system too. The other thing a motor comes in handy for is fighting against current in rivers or atoll passes. I dunno if that’s a thing for you, but for me, that’s one of the big reasons. The coolest part of that system is unlike an outboard, like my Tanzer 22 has, an electric motor wouldn’t fail to start when an oil tanker forgets the rules of the water, and doesn’t make any effort to slow or change course for an unpowered craft, and the crew starts shouting foul language and telling you to watch where you’re going. Oh, I can SEE where I was going, I just couldn’t make the wind blow harder! 🤬
Those new sails look awesome. Better than Christmas!
Getting an electric outboard that charges batteries too would be awesome.
Great idea.
I have one. Charges naff all!
Make sure if you get an outboard motor, position your motor mount so that the motor propeller is deep enough in the water. I can't remember the channel I was watching, but that guy propeller was barely underwater and his sailboat wouldn't move. Good Luck !!
Glad to see the prop back together!!!
Were you "wow'ing" in Mdina, the silent city? ;). [ last 10 seconds or so ]. Malta is amazing.
Sam those sails are gorgeous! Time for a nice long sail to break them in. 😁
Good. Get one of those mic mufflers for the wind! 😂
Great progress sam keep on sailing bro😊
Consistency and patience. Very inspiring !
Hi Sam , new to your channel, enjoying watching , love your positive outlook
One of your best videos ever! Love the look around at the end.
