What's the progress with Dan's tunnel?
Dan was making good progress but we realised he got a little bit mixed up and found himself underneath the Suez Canal last week which apparently caused some issues over there. It’s quite the setback but we think he’s moving in the right direction again.

Way to put our camera to the test, Gavin and team! We know that GoPro’s can withstand any BOOM our users throw at it, but seeing it in action is still pretty awesome.
It didn't handle the boom boom after the indian food I ate last week.

When I was in subschool, some of the old guys at sub-vets told me stories of people's arms breaking because they touched the hull to brace themselves for depth charges. Crazy stuff. Video is cool but doesn't really have any scientific value imo 🤷

Historically, depth charges worked best when they detonated below the submarine, as opposed to beside it. This would create one the shockwave, but also a void which the submarine would fall into, enhancing the damage.
That’s why torpedos are lethal too
I love that Gav is still working by himself... but I miss Dan. We need to move him to Texas already.

I would love to see slow mo shots of various woodworking (or metalworking) equipment. A planer or jointer, table saw, miter saw, band saw, lathe, etc. I’ve seen some fairly slow shots of metal lathes, mills, etc. but would also be cool to see that shot with Gav’s eye for detail.

Interesting. As a former Submariner I would be curious to see what the reaction on the boat would be if you hadn't placed the charges on the fairwater deck and had lowered the main depth charge to below the keel. That might have produced a lifting and breaking of the boats' back.

The structure of a model submarine is wildly different from a real one. The plastic just doesn’t behave the same. A metallic internal hull would be interesting…
I feel like the structural integrity to weight ratio would be different between hy80 steel and the plastic. basically you could hold it from one point on the keel and the plastic would hold itself up, and a full sub would break. it would probably just crack.
P.S. What did you do on a sub? I was sonar.

Carbon fiber is what I'd make my sub from it's all the rage now.
As an aquarium owner I am impressed with the durability of that tank. I thought it would shatter the glass with the force but that tank is built well. I've been worried about breaking my own by leaning on it.

This was freaking cool. One of my favourites from you guys! If you did something like this again, maybe binding the camera to the object being exploded would give better footage, with wire or some such since adhesive would probably be ripped apart by the shockwaves.
Can't wait for them to revisit this in 10 years with a real submarine.

The game "Inside" has a part in which you have to avoid a timed shockwave, and the shockwave makes the sound at 2:24 every time it hits. One of the coolest parts of the game, and even cooler knowing how the sound was likely made.
