In this episode, I examine a 1981 Gibson Firebrand "The Paul" Deluxe. This one turns out to have original 1980/1981 Tim Shaw PAF pickups. This guitar needs very little work, and it's nice to see one in a fairly original state. This is a one-episode project.

The light colored patches in the fretboard wood is the ebony sapwood. It looks interesting and attractive to me, personally.
Thanks for watching
My Firebrand has served me well since 1982.
Awesome, they are good guitars!
Nice video, a lot of good information. Love how you were so carful protecting the finish.
Thanks for watching!
It's cool and different. I love 80s too. 86 Squier bullet telecaster/ Stratocaster, contemporary from Japan.
Love those as well.
The Deluxe versions of The Paul Firebrand were mahogany and some are not painted - just a gloss finish.
As far as p/u's go, I have a Sept '81 (original) and it came with a T-Top (bridge) and a Shaw (neck). As they were working through the stock of T's they would just grab and go with what was around - at least that's what I've been told by a Gibson employee from the that era.
On mine, both p/u's have similar date codes, but the T Top has the embossed T on the bobbin cover.
Good info, thanks. I’ve since seen some other guitars of the era with pickups dated as far apart as these.
Nice vid. I’ve had several and the gold burst is the coolest in my opinion. That’s a good example there. Cheers!
Right on!
Been playing an 81 Pelham Blue model since 1991. Love this guitar. Treble pickup went microphonic and some pots physically broke, so I had to replace half the electronics. I bought 500k cts pots and that ruined the guitar tone... so bright my ears couldn't take it. To my surprise, the original tone pots were 100k and the volume pots were 300k, so i put settled on 250k pots and its pretty darn good. These guitars are great players. Ive owned over a dozen guitars and this is the only one I will never part with
Wow, I will have to check out those pots! Thanks!
Those are those "milk bottle" Grovers with the big circles on the back. Yeah macassar ebony can be pretty streaky. That particular piece looks a little more blotchy. Cool find though is that one yours or something you're workin on for somebody?
Mine for the moment, but if I found another in better condition, I would move it along.
It actually is a Les Paul. The first ones were endorsed by Les himself.
I’m only referring to the model name.
@@hacksguitarhobby That's fair. :)
I thought all the "Firebrand" guitars actually had an embossed Firebrand Gibson on the headstock
The fire must have gone out later in the run.
I've got an '81 Deluxe and they used black headstocks so the branding wouldn't have worked.
Looks a lot like the XR-1 I had 🔥
They do look similar. I love the burst on the neck of the XR-1.
@@hacksguitarhobby I forgot about that!
