    I've always liked the smartwood series of guitars. While, yes, some look better than others, I'm confused why Gibson only offers 'sustainable' wood on a limited run of guitars and doesn't release them on regular line up Les Paul and other flagship models. Why use baked maple with Preciosa looks so chocolatey smooth like rosewood? There is nothing wrong with baked maple, but the sound of that turns many potential buyer's off. Perhaps there is a better alternative for richlite / ebony as well.
    This particular smart wood series studio was part of the Muiracatiara top, Preciosa fretboard run. Muiracatiara is also know as Muir for short or even Tiger Wood (not Tiger Woods haha.) Preciosa is spanish for 'precious.'
    I've always found the truss rod cover on these guitars to be very cool looking - but I didn't know they were made of a rubber like material. It feels like a gel sticker that Lisa Frank Company would make. You can bend this truss rod cover without it breaking!
    I definitely suggest trying out a Smartwood Studio if you ever see one!

    Reminds me of my 2002 les paul special. Mines solid mahogany, but it's the simple but beautiful wood here that's doing it for me.

    If they had been serious,they should have done the "The Les Paul" all wood trim and controls on this model in that type of wood on the cap.

      Foxonian Buy one you like ,that's a keeper and buy or get made the wooden parts you require . You might find small bits of Muir (or any nice wood that takes your fancy) large enough to make the knobs , pickup rings, poker chip...

    I have The taperyva gwasu and it is one of the best sounding guitars I have heard.. don't let his tone in the video fool you. It has a rich warm tone clean and lots of growl and tight gainy grittiness that you will notice is different than other LPs. Mine has an ebony fretboard though. I think.

    I have one of these in mint condition. The very exact same model. Sounds a bit more like an SG to my ears. Home use only and it’s a keeper. Absolutely love it apart from the truss rod cover. It came without the Rainforest Alliance certificate from Gibson and I proper had to make a big fuss to get one. Got the certificate in the end.

    I love the Smartwood, I have the exact same model, mint from 2000. I replaced the bridge with a Dimarzio FRED which fixed the trebly tones and warms up the tone nicely. I think these play, feel and sound much better than a normal LP studio. The case mine came in does not have the black interior and doesn’t have the weathered look, it actually does look like tweed. This was my first Gibson LP and it still gets played today but I would part with it for the right price :)

    Had one from 03-14 and adored it, a thin 2001 model with “smartwood” on the truss rod cover. Sadly I sold that one, but got a new 03’ model from righteous guitars, the shop that Rhett Schull is always visiting, replaced the corroded TOM bridge and tailpiece with aluminum Gotoh parts, it RIPs now. Great way to get a Gibson for under $1k . The exotics are thin with the comfort carve and they’re amazingly comfortable and thin. The full size Smartwood studio is chambered so it’s very light and resonant.

    Dear Sir, I really like your channel, digging out great guitars? All this reverREnce for "old" means a LOT of good ones go undercover. BUT: Please- in your demo, maybe less overdrive? Living Loving.... Page's tone is BIG, but not all fuzzed out. For some reason, when people play Zep, Hendrix, they ALWAYS distort it to death. LISTEN to Zep... LISTEN to Hendrix... MANY MANY FAMOUS SONGS ARE _CLEAN_

  • @mmpatriot2170

    Yes Trogly!
    I’m so glad I found this video. I’ve got my version of this guitar in my lap right now. Nearly identical, straighter grain on the top, but definitely “tiger” stripey. This was the first genuine Les Paul I acquired, after dreaming of Les Pauls for years.
    I love it. It’s heavy and powerful. Like a Les Paul should be.
    Beautiful wood and no frills.
    Except for that Green Leaf hologram truss rod cover. Oh, and the gold hardware.
    I don’t usually go for gold bling, but it just works on this guitar, with this wood.
    I think the “green” Smartwood marketing actually hurt this guitar. If it had just been marketed as a straight up Studio Les Paul, with cool exotic wood, I think it would have done a lot better. And I’m a F’ing tree hugger from way back.
    Definitely a keeper for me. 👍

  • @Senzeni
    @Senzeni 6 лет назад

    Pretty. Needs neck binding in dark wood.
    The only dots I like are the abalone ones on my abalone bound Ibanez SA. If you want to put dots, better don't put anything. Rarely does a guitar wear dots with pride. My Epi LP got the gear sticker treatment. If I ever order a custom, I want real gear inlays.

  • @scottbulmer7160

    This would be a great looking, unique LP to own. However, I've listened to the sound bytes numerous times and for some reason I just do not like the sound. It could just be me or maybe you do need to retire your JMP-1C. It just doesn't seem to say "I'm a Les Paul". Anyhow.... great looking ax, thanks for the video and have a great day.

  • @alabamahebrew
    @alabamahebrew 6 лет назад

    From my understanding the Studio versions are stripped down no frills Les Paul's, which I kind of like. I don't care for the Etuners or the coil taps or coil splits. But the Studio's seem to have higher frets as well, at least the two Ive owed did. But this guitar is gorgeous! I prefer the natural wood grain over a painted guitar. Im not a Fender guy but do want to own a Strat someday but it has to be natural wood grain, the fender paint jobs make them look and feel cheap IMO. So Austin is this guitar gonna stay in your collection?

  • @9imack
    @9imack 6 лет назад

    I remember seeing a Swamp Ash one of these & it was gorgeous, the patterning in the wood was amazing. Personally though, I just don't like seeing Dot inlays on Gibson guitars, they just don't look right IMO!

    That is super sweet. That wood looks like a really dense hardwood. I don’t know. I like poopy brown guitars. Why are they using ridge lite. When they got this stuff at their disposal. I guess that’s one of the reasons Gibson is flipped on its head right now.

      Low Life Skater value overall hasn’t changed, Custom Shop reissue LPs are still going up in value and the best bang for the buck if you want quality control, great tone wood etc., go for a used 2000-2008 IMO as they sound and feel the best for around $2500 (plain top) or burst for $3500.
