Is the running issue on my 2005 R53 Mini Cooper S finally sorted??

  • I've bought a 2005 R53 Mini Cooper S from Copart with the description stating it had an undiagnosed noise from the engine bay. After getting the car, I quickly discovered a very strange noise on lift off and a lack of power.
After a bit of research, its pointing towards the timing being out, so I previously changed the timing chain, serviced the supercharger, replaced various gaskets that were leaking and in my last video, removed the catalytic converter internals as it was blocked and replaced the fuel pressure regulator vacuum pipe. But none of these fixed the issue.
Thinking it is a fuelling issue, I'm now going to remove and test the injectors to make sure they are working correctly and change the fuel filter that is fitted inside the fuel tank. Between changing the fuel filter and testing the car, I had a comment on a previous video from a viewer saying they had a similar issue and the fuel filter change cured there running issue. Fingers crossed!

2 things with Cooper S 1 Always use high octane fuel and 2 Make sure you fit the correct amperage and cold crank battery !! What cured your problem was using the higher octaine fuel.

👍 It had a load of fuel in it when I bought, which obviously I don’t know what quality it was. I would always put v-power / ultimate in something like this.

Without wanting to be 'Another guy on the internet' - the pop/bang on the overrun sounds just like it did on my old facelift R53 (except louder in your case because of the exhaust!). The pre-facelift cars don't do it as standard. That supercharger noise never gets old!

It runs so much better now it’s got decent fuel and a new filter in it. It’s good to get comments with people saying there’s pop/bang quite a bit. Like you say, mine currently with no cat and a miltek system with amplify any noise. 100% the supercharger noise is awesome and very addictive!

@@olliesgarage Am I right in thinking the fuel filter is not on the service schedule at all? I’ve changed 4 in total and all seemed to be the original one (I.e filthy!). The horrible plastic squeaking noise as you took it apart brought those memories right back!!!!

@olliesgarage for reference with the r53 when you decat it and the 02 sensor sees this it loads a basic setting, to correct thinking there is too much fuel. You will also gain a small amount of torque but you will lose bhp.there are studies and dyno graphs that show this too if you look for them..

Great video - bet that filter's never been changed. There's a regulator under the filter body that controls the line pressure to the rail, and then of course the regulator on the rail. The line pressure must be enough to supply atmospheric rail regulator + boost vac line pressure at max flow. One critical check is you do get rail pressure rise under boost and does your system hold it at max flows i.e. WoT at 6k rpm. If you don't and you've changed the filter you have to look at both regulators and on a heavily modded car a higher flow pump might be needed.

Replace your ignition coils if you are getting engine lugging/stuttering at certain RPM range.

This particular year MINI has only one coil. Its a coil pack. What can happen is the stem for the number 3 cyl on the coil pack ( has 4 ) can corrode....That is typically the only issue when it comes to coil being suspect. Cheers!

Bypass valve causes hesitation and poor fueling, the valve doesn't close all the way causing an air leak back through to the air box. I currently have the same issue. Gtt or 1320 make an uprated one that fixes this problem

    • @olliesgarage
      @olliesgarage  6 месяцев назад

I checked the bypass when I removed and serviced the supercharger and it seemed fine, think I might have to look at it again to make sure

In a supercharged MINI, a faulty BPV will leak boost, ( compressed air ) when the flap does not seat proper. In cases like that the car becomes sluggish while having reduced boost pressure.

Surprised you can put a Co-Part car on the road in UK. Do they allow MOT with that and no Cat on exhaust?

    • @olliesgarage

I collected a CAT last weekend, just got to find the time to fit it! I can then get it MOT’d and put some miles on it before Intake it to the Nurburgring in April! 👍

The rabbit had unfortunately passed away about 2 weeks before I did the video. I had cleaned and moved the hutch to the garage so it wasn’t a constant reminder for my kids, as it as their first pet. Sold the hutch and now we have a dog. The dog has lots of water!
