Excellent informative video, Damo! My 2006 R53 was highly modded when brand new (now 7k total miles), however essentially no records furnished by the original owner substantiating what was done (particularly WRT cylinder head/cam). So, I had the mentioned Adrian in Romania perform a remote tune which worked out quite well with my objectives of peak efficiency vs peak power. OTOH, I'd have much preferred to have eyes-on with dialog such as you were able to do at 1320 Mini. Also noting, I just now posted a new topic on North American Motoring (NAM) with links to this and your follow-up on-the-road drive video with 1320's lead tech.
Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for sharing it. I did not really know what was involved before doing this an surprised how Much is involved. I think a hands on tune must be so much better for the car and performance. I would think the same components on a similar r53 would have different characteristics so being able to make lots of small changes must be the better. 1320 are very very good but guessing from the NAM you are US based so a bit of a long trip to bring the car 😂
I’m so jealous that you’re able to just drive to 1320. Here in the US (at least on the east coast) there’s basically no one that tunes these cars and even less that’ll tune them with the stock ECU. The only person I’ve found that’s willing to touch it will only do it if I have a Link ECU
Brilliant video thanks.. Inlet temps are hard to lower on a r53 best way is to fit meth injection 2x nozzles 1 In the left intercooler horn and 1 in the manifold after the bypass valve works bloody great I never see higher than 34 degrees when meth is on. Before with 17 pulley and grs it was in the high 40s.😊
Glad you enjoyed the video , was more technical than videos I had done before so was not sure how it would go down. Might consider meth injection next year but not just yet 😞
I had my car in for work 2 weeks ago from ireland, met tom and he done a catcam 461, 550 injectors and a remap and my car is lighter now on fuel than it was orgnially i find driving it as normal, great lads couldnt recommend them enough
@@DamoDrivesil be back again next summer for abit more, i had 461cam, 17% pulley, grs intercooler, timing chain, clutch, all oil seals that were leaking, front bushs, subframe powdercoated all in 2-3, days serious work they do, there is no were in ireland that can do as good of a job as these lads can 10/10 for them 👌
@@DamoDrivesour problem over here is we dont have any shell v power so were limited to run on e10 petrol, they did mention its a small lose of bhp there, but i made 218bhp at around 6950rpm and 188whp, hesding over next year for a janspeed manifold and tomcat maybe few other goodies hopefully
Very interesting video! I had no idea there are so many parameters built into the ECU software to monitor and protect the engine. I've got a completely stock 2002 MCS JCW and seriously thinking of getting it mapped by Tom. Would be great to hear his thoughts on getting the best out of stock, unmodified Minis.
Amazing, detailed and structured video. This is worth watching and rewatching many times. Plenty of useful info. As far as I’m not a native speaker, I am not sure that I understood correctly the part about front-mount intercoolers (FMI vs normal TMI). Does FMI provide less torque because of its volume? Is it overall more efficient to use an OEM GP TMI on track than a FMI? I would much appreciate if you bring little more light to that point of your conversation. Thank’s in advance! And best luck to you! Subscribed.
I have an airtec intercooler on mine which seems to work fine, afraid I cannot comment really as it’s the only 1 I have experience with. Have a few other r53 videos which might help
Around £500. They have to buy a licence for the software (per ECU) then an hours time on the rolling road. Once you have the licence you can go back and just pay for the rolling road and Tom’s time
I think I guy called Adrian mapped that car before 1320 using a flash but he is the daddy at tuning that’s why you only gained 8hp good thing tho least you know it’s all setup correctly
It’s not just the power gains (it was more than 8hp - 186 to 200) the number you are probably comparing was when it was on the dyno on Feb which was 192 but air temp was a lot colder (the dyno does compensate but will be a slight difference) beat numbers are the dyno run before any changes which was 186whp and after the time 200whp. Previously it was not done by Adrian but was a Haywood map. You are never going to get as good results with a simple flash map over a rolling road map as you can make lots of small changes to match the components you have in the car. Even identical parts can have different characteristics or different readings. we flow tested by injectors last time and although they are 440cc they did not output 440cc and each injector was slightly different (sorry cannot find the exact numbers but hopefully it makes sense) I have also found the power curve is smoother feels like it has picked up power around the 3k mark. The only thing as well if Adrian had mapped it some of the settings were not quite correct BUT it was running on the safe side and running a bit rich so no damage done to the car
@@DamoDrives dunno if it was Adrian was a guess but as you said won’t get as much gains with a flash. I had mine flashed and ended up getting a dyno tune also to make sure it was running optimal
Love that place. Tom’s a legend and all round decent guy. Glad you got it mapped at last
They are a great bunch and enjoy sharing what they do and why you should go there. Not people saying they are great but you can see it
Enjoyed the upload keep it up mate ❤
Thank you 🤜, glad you enjoyed the video, part 2 next week having a chat about mods

I suppose as it’s a British car a lot more of them over here (guessing though)

Enjoyed that , nice to see Tom the gooner doing what he does best 👍
You need to drive the car again and see what you think. I agree Tom is a wizard when it comes to doing this

The fact you came from Ireland shows how good they are. Done an amazing job and had a really enjoyable time learning about what they are doing and why

Thanks Darren, has really improved the car and so worth the money.

Hi Damo what intercooler would you advise me to go for? I’m new to this with a newly bought r53

What was the cost of the map?

I want Rob Becket to do my W11
I just came to comments to see if anyone else saw Rob Beckett 😂
Tom 100% looks like Rob Beckett 😂
Your going to blow the engine in that car if you keep interfering with it
Complete opposite with this remap as it has resolved the issue with the engine running rich unless you think there is another issue ?
How’s he going to blow the engine by having it correctly mapped 🙈🤣
Fanny
You are clueless
Is that to me or the original comment about the engine blowing up
