I went to an university to learn those things but they suck, so i ended learning them from youtube, every single thing i know today was possible of these great virtual teachers and now I'm a professional motion designer
My first digital design class (in the late 90's pre-RUclips) the professor assigned us a book to follow with tutorials and I taught myself every design program I use today.
Your a huge inspiration man, it's hard to stay positive when your learning this in your 40's....but motion is something I've always been drawn to since I started graphic design back in 98. Even if I'm never at your level I'm learning to enjoy the process and am grateful for so much knowledge that's freely given here.
I'm 30 and in my first year of graphic design at uni, although decided that I'd prefer to focus going into animation and I just dont see anything good coming out of graphic design! Hopefully I can do animation on the side and that'll help me in the long run!
As for learning animation from my own experience, a good way to do so is to animate at least two things per week, not necessarily daily if uninspired. But with consistency on that, you can achieve a ton in a year, and if you also illustrate things for it yourself that’s a great bonus. We overestimate what we can do in a day and GREATLY underestimate what we can do in a year.
Fair point - animation is a technical skill (computer animation), the design is the artistic part. These are two separate things. Sadly, I suck at design... even after years of drawing classes and such - I can only render what I see but unable to create something compelling. While animation feels like home to me because I can pick someone else good design and bring it to life.
The animation is certainly more technical, but certainly has a lot of artistry. I feel much more comfortable animating. It feels like eating dessert rather than vegetables. haha
As someone with a background in traditional animation and 3D character animation who has transitioned over into motion design, I can definitely agree on the importance of the 12 principles of animation in mograph. And, to your #1 point about focusing on Design, I think you could even argue that the 12 principles actually covers that under the Appeal principle. Love your videos. I always learn something new. Keep up the great work!
I don't even have that much of an interest in motion design. I just find your technique and aesthetic so fascinating; I can't stop watching! Thanks so much for doing what you do.
"If the structural (design) elements aren't designed well, it's gonna look crap." Damn right, design is the most important thing. Another great vid, Ben.

I LOVE your channel, your simple explanations and your work in general. I think your channel is one of the most important findings I've made in recent times. That's pretty important info for me, as the MD beginner. Thank you!
No way! U never stop surprising me with your awesome vids and now you're giving me 2 months on skillshare for free? What have I done to deserve this??? XD You're by far my favourite youtuber and animator. Keep up with your amazing work!
You don't need design school to learn design, but it does help to spend 2-4 years just doing design before you go out into the big world. I think I learned the most in internships because deadlines, idiot clients, awesome clients, and financial boundaries are all great teachers.
Me too ,I want to start this journey to become a motion designer , although most of my circle of friends have something that they are doing and they are talented

haha ya I totally need to keep reminding myself of tip 5 cuz I'm so scatterbrained I seem to be distracted by all the streams of motion graphics out there! And thanks for the tips, but even more so the encouragement :)
Hi Ben, love your channel and thanks for all the tutorials. My suggestion for a future video would be around sharing assets between AE projects - e.g what size to create them, and how to import something created in one project and use in another project and/or how to keep and maintain a library of effects. Keep up the amazing work!
I would love a quick run-through of how to constrain something to a path movement in AE. Not follow a path, but actually live update to path movement. Hope that will find its way into your tutorials some day :) Thanks a lot for all you amazing content, hugely appreciated!
Ben, thanks a lot for your effort every week! The Videos are toplevel, enjoyable and full of inspirational informations. even after years in the industry. :) Keep on!
Hey man! Reaaally loving your videos! Your skills coupled with your personality makes them stand out and you really have a knack for teaching. Any chance that you’ll design a skillshare course yourself? Thanks for your generosity and kindness either way :)
I'm new to graphic design/motion design. I have more of an illustration background. I was wondering what kind of graphic design to learn before diving into motion graphics? There seems to be types of graphic design that's geared to a specific thing like package design, print design, UI/UX design etc. But what type of graphic design leads to motion graphics? Some motion graphics just look like animation so I'm wondering could I just use my illustration skills instead of learning graphic design. I hope I'm explaining myself well. I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed on where to start.
hierarchy in design is making it clear which elements are most important. In a newspaper the headline is much larger and the body copy is smaller. It's obvious what's the mot important information and what order it should be read in. :) A common mistake (and request from the client) is to make everything bigger! and everything ends up the same size and nothing stands out, because everything is trying to stand out.

Awesome, Ben! I have been thinking precisely the last point, lately. I want to improve myself in Motion Design, but I just can't do it before improving my design skills. Luckily I have a full-time job that will allow me to have such a pace, hehe. Cheers!
