I once worked at a small design studio (it was also just starting doing motion graphics projects) and my boss reaaaaaaaaaaally didn't want to "waste" time doing storyboards regardless of what we told him. The first couple of projects we got REALLY LUCKY, because those were simple infographics and the clients weren't picky at all, but then we got one project that had illustration, 3D, green screen, etc. IT WAS HUNKY, and we begged my boss to let us do storyboards and styleframes. He said no, so we had to do the whole thing on the go... 1 whole MONTH of work... and the client HATED IT! From the style to the sequence, all to the trash and back to the beginning. Happy to report that the lesson was learned.
Oh may, that's the ideal horror story. Storyboards are always a "waste," then this happens and suddenly they're "essential." I learned in almost the exact same way, haha
I couldn't imagine the pity your team felt putting all the work and time in on that project to just trash it!
Why are all of Ben's videos amazing?
Nepotism, gotta be. Haha thank you so much :D
I think about this a LOT
Because Ben is amazing
Because he already knew the 5 tips for storyboarding...
My work has improved SO much since I discovered this channel, I´m in debt to you my good sir!!
Your tutorials are invaluable. Short, to the point and only the necessary stuff are included. Thanks for making it available for everyone to see! Also, Milanote really is the shit.
I'm very glad they sponsored you! I'm working at a complicated project where the team is super disorganized and simply not prepared for the job, I was going crazy to find a way to organize things and show them WHY the script is too long, and the info they're giving me don't make sense, and finally I could frame it all in one place, easy and fast, and the message I want to send them comes across very clearly! Thank you a lot!!!
I think it's time to marathon your videos :D
I would be thrilled! Get plenty of popcorn
Binge Marriott.
Thank you so much Ben!!! You really are helping lives out here, I love you!!!!!🙌🏾
I always appreciate your focus on professional work ie; how this helps with the client relationship and making the process smoother.
You are so skilled! I love watching your tutorials. They are always so useful and descriptive.
I'm not sure this video covers it exactly, but brainstorming ideas is so important in the process. I'd equate it to rehearsal when a director is shooting a film. No director says that rehearsal is a waste of time but it's increasingly rare. But it allows actors to come up with ideas which bring a film to life and make the characters feel authentic. Same with doing a personal project. If you take the time to mindmap before you dive even into the storyboarding process you push past the obvious and the idea will be stronger.
That knives out example is oddly comforting! Thanks for breaking down your workflow Ben!
Thanks, Ben!! This is by far the most confusing process when working with clients. This really helps.
Wow what a gold mine - starting my first storyboard today and you really helped me get set up!
I have been driving myself crazy with trying to find solid videos that are both for beginners and actually explain the process in full without dumbing it down so thank sprout so much! This will definitely help so much on a personal project.
Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge as always Ben!
Omg! I have been looking for something like this. Storyboarding for clients can be a long process. But this makes it so much more fun, and far more interactive. The great thing is you can walk the client through it. Thanks for sharing this platform, (I have been creating storyboards in Photoshop) so this program is going to help me organise and save me so much time.
Keep up the awesome work :)
Thanks for this - it give me more confidence to discuss with the other members of my team why this is so important. Cheers
This is so timely. I just began making mockups for a client project straight on Illustrator and was stuck... of course because I didn't sketch it out beforehand!
A lot of this advice goes for illustration and 2D design work as well.
BEN, YOURE AWESOME 💕
Great stuff man. Super inspiring!!
Thanks for sharing so much with the motion community.
You run a great channel. 🙌
Thank you for these useful tips Ben 🌹✨
This is so helpful! Thank you Ben!!
Thank you so much for this video, I just got my first commissioned job and I was struggling a little bit to convey the idea of the script to my client. I had the idea of the storyboard and with this, now I can do it!
Oh man, that's so awesome to read. Congrats on your first commissioned job! Good luck with it my friend
Great tips!
From the tip lord himself! I am honoured :)

You've been very helpful in my motion design journey Ben!
"What is Goon?" was a personal project ?? :O i'm shocked. Your videos are all so professional. I would like to see more of these videos about interaction with clients! Maybe about budget and negotiation... ? :)) thank you so much for sharing your work!
Recently ran into some story boarding misunderstandings with clients so this is very helpful! Also, love your Goon animation Ben!
This was exactly what I needed, thank you so much!
Great ! You have to make a course on how you create an explainer video from brief to delivery, it would be awesome !
Super helpful, I wish someone had explained all this to me before...
Amazing tips man, thanks!
Awesome job mate, been enjoying the channel more and more!
Great video! Thanks for sharing Ben!
Thank you so much Ben!! That was really helpful to me

Very helpful! Thank you very much.
Great one.
This is SO INFORMATIVE 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I love your videos.. contents Thanks!
Another beauty!
thanks Tim! You're the beaut
Thanks!
"sugar cubes" - my best moment :D. Thank a lot for shearing your wisdom!
I start drawing ideas in procreate. Then the storyboards also in procreate and i create a look &feel (stylesheet) with the most important items and the colors and typography. The look and feel+storyboards i let the client review 😊
This video was very helpful. I have been putting off my chances of working with clients because I was always afraid I would make something the client wouldn't like but with story boards, the client can be on the same page. I wish they taught this more in college where I earned my multimedia degree.
So good!
Thank you, Ben :D
Thank you Edu for watching :)
These tips are very helpful. Milanote also seems really useful, so I've made an account.
Keep getting more and more recommendations for Milanote, so I think I'm going to sign up for it soon!
Good thing it's free too, so I don't have to wait buying it until it's on SAIL
Useful!
Thanks Romal!
thanks for the tips mograph maxmoefoe!
At 11:25 you mentioned you wrote the scipt. Are you planning a video about script writing tipps? That would be amazing. I always struggling with the right words but they are so important and also lead the visual.
This is great. I've just had the opposite problem. A really fast turnaround animation with a rough sketchy look and a mismatch of expectations. Having made all the initial art ready to animate and the client being shocked it looks like the stick figure storyboard rather than that just being a placeholder before i add my best art into every frame.
Great video, arigatou!
So great. Storyboarding is very important. For my part I always go for rough sketches in a notebook for myself - brainstormin and so on. After that I draw a clean sketch in photoshop or procreate, put all frames together in indesign, give some good descriptions and send it to the client. With an OK I finish the storyboard into styleframes and send it again to the client. And only I get a OK for the styleframes I jump into animation.
Nice video as always! I worked with the artist of the storyboard of 9:10. He is an amazing illustrator capturing ideas so vividly. 😁
Amazing video
Thanks Adaa!
I used to have a hair just like Ben's maybe 2 years ago (surprisingly the same year this video was uploaded)
perfect
Thanks so much!
Bentastic.
Milanote seems pretty neat, thanks for the tips
Do you typically draw the storyboard part digitally ? You mention copy and pasting the ship at the end
Yes, I like draw the boards themselves in photoshop :)
That's some goon advice
Thnks for ths amazing tutorial! I was wondering, has it ever happened to you that even with your thorough process something does not work quite well in the style frames phase? If so, how did you handle it animation and client-wise?
Glorious hair day!
Haha thank you, I had a haircut right after recording this one. can't stand it anymore :)
Amazing video! What font are you using here? It’s lovely
Ben I love your stuff.... You'd be a great Creative Director. I'd worry a lot if I was up against you for a role.
Figma is also great for such things. It's free.
That knives out drawing looks like one of those "client budget" memes hahahaha
I used to live in Australia. Goon was my go to. 🤣
Where I may watch this amazing ad video from this video???
Hi Ben. When the storyboard is done... then you create style frames, right? At what stages do you usually let the client see and approve milestones? Do you submit it as PDFs?
Ben, in your opinion, what is the best storyboard software for beginners? I'm in my mid-40s and just starting out.
I have a question sir, where do you draw your final art outlook? Do you draw it on illustration or you directly make it on Adobe after effects or animate?? Thank you very much
Can you review alight motion, it's the only motion graphics in android, i find it good and was able to follow you and after effects,
Btw, i really like your videos
Ooo, I've not heard of it. I'll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion :)
@@BenMarriott thanks for taking your time to reply 😀.
amazing service!
I have a question about Milanote. Do client need to register his account on the Milanote to wrtie a comment on the board? Or can he comment just by the link?
They can just comment with a link :)
What’s a great storyboard software where I can make it live like a cartoon my kids would watch on TV?
For reference, how long does it usually take to make a full storyboard like this? 🤔
Does anyone know what song is in the background of the first minute or so of the video? Not the intro, but the video itself?
here's my problem, what if I can't draw for shit during storyboard right before the full color preview? It is apparent your drawing skills can absolutely mimic the final. Does that maean I skip right away to digitally making the frame as close as possible to the final vision? For example, build the final frame of how it will look in after effects if I suck at drawing?
what is that storyboard software you're using? couldn't catch the name. miller note? milliner?
Milanote
so what was the note in storyboard for goons nipples? :D
I'll DM you ;)
09:24 yes, yes the melon turns into a boy. You're effortless!
How many hours do you work in a day Ben?
usually from 8am to 5pm :)
Next time: 5 tips for amazing phone calls with the client.
Well I think it depends on what kinda clients u are having too , lot of them are in a rush to see the final work and they don’t care how much time it will take or whatsoever.
