Just getting into reloading for the 45/70, shot them for years but finally got a couple of my own. Ruger No3 and a “JM” marked 1895G. Watching all the 45/70 loading videos I can before I start down this rabbit hole.
Excellent video, very timely as I just picked up a set of 45-70 dies so I can reload. Quite a bit different than regular centerfire cartridges so nice to see. Would love to see a video using the Hornady leverEvolution bullets that use the shorter case
I have both, an 1895 CB and an original 1873 trapdoor. I also use 3031 for both. 1873 I dropped down to 36gr and use 385gr self cast lead bullets at .459 dia. I also use 52gr of 3031 and the Berry's 350gr bullets. My 69 year old reconstructed shoulders can't take much more then that. I also load the Hornady FTX bullets.
Thanks Guy, this is just what i was looking for! I had ordered a box of the 45/70 Berry's bullets a few days ago, and had been looking how folks load them. I have been shooting the Acme 300 & 405 grain "lipstick" bullets which actually work well for plinking. I have a Marlin1895 Guide and a CVA V2 single shot. One of my favorite hunting bullets is the Speer 400 grain soft point (unavailable currently) with H4198 @ 1800 FPS. I get so I like just going out and shooting steel though and enjoy the economy "fun" loads....those jacketed bullets are getting expensive. I decided to order up the 45/70 bullets after having great sucsess with the 30-30 loads you worked up with the Berry's. Those are a blast! You really do a great job and keep it up! Thank you so much again!
Loved this video watched it 3 times to make sure I got all the info I can. Would love to see more in-depth loading like this with other cartridges and Guy leading the way.
There is also a written article on Ultimate Reloader's website. There's an article for almost every RUclips video, and they typically contain a bit more info. All the charts and graphs you see in the videos are in the article and it'll stay open as long as you need.
I got into reloading just for 45-70. I’ve not used the berrys yet bc I found a great deal on some jacked soft points. It’s so much fun loading for the lever and single shot guns.
Enjoyed your 45-70 video. I've tried several 45-70 loads, but (my 75 yr old shoulder) enjoyed shooting loads ~1500 ft/sec the best. I shoot 405gr lead FP bullets, but might try the Berry's 350gr. With the 405gr I've used both IMR 4198 (32gr) & Hodgdon BL-C2 (40gr) & both work great.
We did that with a 350 grain Berry's Bullet from the 500 S&W revolver at about 1350 fps... It went completely through two gel blocks for over 32" of penetration! I'd expect the 45-70 to do even better. RUclips won't let me post a link here, but you can find that article on the UR website easily.
One of the big plusses with these are the fact that you don't need to clean the copper fouling out of your barrel to get good accuracy with cast lead bullets. Most people find that switching to a lead bullet after shooting jacketed, typically results in poor accuracy with the leads. I have confirmed this somewhat with my .45-70 Marlin and my H&R .45-70 rifles.
I always enjoy your videos Guy. It’s clear you know your stuff in and out. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. That’s a beautiful Sharps! Semper fi brother.
Great timing & Great info, as I had just recently loaded up 50 of the Berry’s 350g for my Henry X-Model 45-70. I had decent results using Starline, “Ginex” & RL-7, but ran about 150FPS faster than the Hornady load book. With 43gr. I averaged 1743fps & with 47gr. I averaged 1970fps, just an FYI for anyone using RL7. (Shot 2 rounds @ 49gr. and both exceeded 2050fps, didn’t proceed). I will be acquiring & using the Lee crimping die in the future along with my current Hornady set, The Hornady Seating Die is great but is difficult to get a good crimp, as eluded to in the video. The delta of crimping VS crushing is minuscule. Thumbs up for Berry’s though, they are accurate, cheap & fun to shoot! I will be loading & shooting many more of these.
Thank you, I just ordered these bullets and am looking forward to reloading for my Marlin 'JM' 1895G rifle. You've confirmed what I had gleaned from reading lots of different websites about reloading the 45-70. I'm not sure I'm ever going to put any bullets through my 1873 trapdoor (made in 1875 having the arched trapdoor), I dont want to risk cracking it.
That Mark 5HD looks like a nice scope, but a little pricey. I had a scope on my Marlin 45-70, but replaced it with a Williams peep sight. I got tired of getting whacked in the forehead by the scope. You came really close on those hotter loads.
Ya, my own 45-70 is a Marlin with a small 2.5x Leupold & 4.9" of eye relief. I've been using that little scope for decades and prefer it on hard kicking rifles.
I have the 16" carbine barrel with the T/C Contender. I enjoy subsonic loads with Trailboss (about 13.5 grains). Fun to shoot out of the 5 lb carbine and accurate. I've shot hot Trapdoor loads out of it and it broke a redot sight. It'll do the job, but not as fun to shoot as the Trailboss loads.
Sounds intetesting. Provided you can find Trail Boss powder. I haven't seen any Trail Boss for over three years now. I liked using clean burning Trail Boss powder for loads in transitional model revolvers ( Open Tops & Remington's) and low pressure cowboy loads.
Outstanding 45-70 segment. While I do shoot 45-70, it’s in a Super 14 Contender pistol, 14” barrel. I’ve not used 350g bullets, but have used jacketed 300g and Hornady 325g FTX (do not need to be trimmed for the Contender single shot break action pistol). The 45-70 is literally a kick in a hand cannon.
31gr aa5744 and a hornady 350gr round nose.. seated to book length from my pedersoli sharps I get single digit SD numbers more often than not. Pushing that pill ALMOST 1600fps, it runs about 1570-1580fps outside temperature depending.
Interesting. I'd missed that and had been cautioned by Berry's that their bullets were not meant for hunting. Apparently they like this one for hunting. I'm glad, and yes I think that it will work just fine. Best of luck to you this season!
Great 45-70 reloading video! Glad I found it as this will be my next adventure. Could one use the lanolin/alcohol lubricant formula? And would you reload these on a Dillon 550C?

I was lucky enough to walk in to my LGS and just happen to ask is they had any marlins come and they had got one 45-70 dark in and hadn’t even took it out yet. So I bought it
Brilliant video on loading 45-70. How do you feel about using Varget and H4895 for 45-70? I have those powders plentiful. I don’t not have any IMR 3031
Sorry for the late reply. I've been quite pleased with Varget and the 45-70. Excellent accuracy and velocity. Seems like the barrel gets quite a bit of powder residue, but that's easily dealt with.
I would prefer a bullet designed for hunting, such as either of the 350 grain Hornady bullets. They offer a round nose and a flat nose version. Both work well from a lever action rifle. The "trapdoor" level loads are fine for hunting. Remember that the 45-70 is best used at modest range. It can be shot at long range, but it's best used at shorter ranges.
@@guyminer2384 yes I understand but if you read what Berry’s said these are designed for hunting and they’re very cheap compared to Hornady hunting bullets and I have 500 of them already
@@guyminer2384 “While they are not designed for hunting, our products are a suitable choice for your next hunting trip.” I am going by this statements on the 45-70 page. A light copper jacket with a hunk of lead going 1,250 fps should do the trick on whitetails no?
I use home cast 340 flat nose. It has dropped every deer I have shot at. One was 160 yards. I actually back off the powder charge a bit. As I raised pressure, the accuracy got worse. So I stopped where accuracy was obtained. Recoil is relatively mild. No more than a 12 gauge shotgun.
Yes. I think that's likely a viable alternative. I haven't done it, but 45 ACP shoots great from my 1911's and also from a 45 ACP Ruger Blackhawk revolver, with a taper crimp. I think it would work with the 45-70 as well. Berry's states that their bullets will accept either a taper crimp or a roll crimp. I surely do like that Lee factory crimp die though... I called it a roll crimp in the video... That's not quite accurate, it's a crimp applied by a collet design, squeezing the case mouth.
They're really not designed for hunting. They "might" work out okay, but I hunt with either hard cast flat point bullets or jacketed soft points/hollow points with the 45-70 cartridge. They're a fine practice bullet.
Actually no. The single shot rifle doesn't require a crimp. One might - maybe - improve the extreme spread and standard deviation of the ammunition. Maybe.
I don’t really care what pressure level a Marlin 1895 can handle. I’m done before 28,000 psi/CUP. Powder is payload, so I generally don’t go any slower burning than H-4198.

Not necessary for a single shot rifle, but you might try it both ways and see which shoots better for you and your rifle. I don't crimp for either of my Ruger Number One rifles in 375 H&H or 7mm Rem magnum.
@@guyminer3168 I've used Berry's for years in my 45-70 single shot rifles and lever gun. Very light crimp in the single shots and a modest crimp in the 1886. Have moved into black powder and 535 grain lead postells.
Loaded up some short Hornady cases with 55 grains of 3031 (required a little compressing of the powder) with berry's 350 grain bullet. I was getting 1925 fps with this load from a marlin 1895 with a 16" barrel. The primers appear to have flattened a little bit, definitely a top end load for sure.
It was mentioned that you don’t use the Berry 350 in your older rifle because the bore is too large. What’s the max diameter diameter you’d recommend these be used in?
I don't think this is going to get a responce but ima try. I got these bullets and I'm trying to reload for my sharps trap door with a max psi on my barrel of 31908 "according to my owns manual" my sharps has the 1/2 in hexagonal bull barrel on it but I'm concerned ima blow out my barrel becuase alot form are talking modern loads and I cant use anything with a super high psi.
Re: The FTX bullets...in my mind, having to maintain a separate set of cases for a minimal increase in ballistic coefficient just isn't worth it. At normal .45-70 hunting ranges you just won't see a significant advantage in trajectory. The pistol FTX bullets actually have worse BC's compared to equal weight XTP's, and you've ruined a set of cases to get worse BC.😕 In short, a very successful marketing campaign by Hornady selling a whole lot of nothing much. However, I will concede that the .30-30 FTX round is indeed a significant upgrade over standard round-nose bullet rounds...but you don't have to shorten the cases to use them.
The 150 grain Berry's bullets shot well from my 1970's Glenfield (Marlin) with a microgroove barrel. I haven't yet shot this 350 grain Berry's bullet from a microgroove 45-70, and will probably not get that opportunity. They do shoot fine from my Marlin 1895, but it doesn't have microgroove rifling. As I understand it, the microgroove barrels require some attention to getting the proper, slightly oversized, bullet diameter to shoot lead bullets well.

Not very consistent but cheap, basically the Busch light of bullets. Loaded these bullets with .458 SOCOM.

They're made for a standard .458" rifle barrel.
I don't know what "31908" means. I'd recommend you ask your rifle builder about suitable loads.
if you set the depth too deep on the handtool, will you detonate the primer?
I don't think that's possible. It only seats to the bottom of the primer pocket.
so what your saying is if i get a single shot i can load it as spicy as i want? mango habenero 600 grn here i come
Re: The FTX bullets...in my mind, having to maintain a separate set of cases for a minimal increase in ballistic coefficient just isn't worth it.
How do these bullets work with Marlin micro groove rifling. I have heard that lead bullets do not work well with micro groove rifling?
The 150 grain Berry's bullets shot well from my 1970's Glenfield (Marlin) with a microgroove barrel. I haven't yet shot this 350 grain Berry's bullet from a microgroove 45-70, and will probably not get that opportunity. They do shoot fine from my Marlin 1895, but it doesn't have microgroove rifling. As I understand it, the microgroove barrels require some attention to getting the proper, slightly oversized, bullet diameter to shoot lead bullets well.
@@guyminer3168 thank you I enjoy the video. I am a new reloader but have not reloaded for my 45-70 yet. This will be new for me loading a straight wall cartridge. Thanks again
Twice as much shooting
whens the precision 30-06 happening?
I dunno... So many projects in line already...
@@guyminer3168 you and I both know the old warhorse should be the priority 😉
