This movie totally changed my life... it's such crazy timing that it's being re-released right now...
My Dad made me watch this film with him when it came out. It was one of the few times I ever saw him cry. I think he related to it because I WAS Emilio's character at the time, and he was like Martin's. After watching The Way, his ultimate dream was to walk the Camino once he retired. He died of cancer just 8 months before he could fulfill his dream.
I ended up walking the Camino the year after my Dad died. I walked the 800km and got his name on the Compostela. It was a pretty miserable trip because of how deep in grief I was... but it helped me process in a way I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.
I decided to walk the Camino again last year (2022), now that I'm in a better place. It was hands down the best experience of my life. I now recommend it to everyone I know. It really is a magical journey 💖

Stephanie, I loved your documentary on your pilgrimage! I'm preparing/psyching myself up to do my third Camino (I'm pushing 70), and I've been watching RUclips videos. Most of them are inadequate, because the narrator is so wrapped up in filmmaking that they aren't really there. Perhaps because this was your second camino, and because you're an experienced filmmaker, yours is the only documentary I've seen thus far that captures the beauty and essence of the walk. I would encourage everyone to look up Stephanie Hurtado and watch her video. I actually think it hits the core even better than "The Way".

Thank you Emilio for making this movie. It changed my life. I walked my first Camino in September 2021 and then was lucky enough to walk my second Camino with our youngest daughter through Portugal in 2022. I am convinced the world would be a better place, if all of the world leaders were required to walk the El Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

Back in 2011 I was at home in the UK waiting for my Taxi at 3am to take me to the airport for a 6am flight to Spain to walk my first Camino. I had only heard about the Camino weeks before and decided on a whim to just go for it and see how far I'd get, I literally knew nothing about it . Flicking through the 24 hour news channels I stopped on CNN , they were interviewing Martin Sheene and his son about the movie " The Way" ! I couldn't believe what I was seeing, weeks before I'd never heard of the Camino and here I was watching the trailer for a movie about the Camino whilst waiting to go on Camino myself. It was a hairs on the back of the neck moment and for me something I'll never forget.
I walked my first Camino and eventually saw the movie about 6 months later, they did a good job, it's a very watchable movie and for whatever reason always brings me to tears.
I've walked many Caminos since, but will never forget the first or that coincidence .
    Buen Camino

Its about religion too actually... It is afterall The Way of St. James, this two are walking. I did the Camino, and I am not religious, but I am open to religion, so I am pretty sure that the two characters depend, on the way of St. James to find themself. Emilio even says it on minutes 8:09

I had the miraculous chance to meet the Estevez family at one of the albergues. Wonderful; loving hospitable people like so many of the hosteliers in Spain.

Just saw the movie today. August 7, 2024. I went by myself in 2019 to get rid of some ptsd regarding terrorist attacks. I did the Camino Portugues. My kids were sp impressed that they all wanted to join. So, 2023 I walked it with a 15, 13, 11 and 9 year old. I was the 'guy from Holland with his 4 kids' on the way. It was such a great experience for all of us. Rhey even awaited us at the place to get out compostella.
You talk about community, well, that is what my kids still talk about. We are all on this journey, but we are all helping eachother. That was so awesome. Seeing this movie today made me happy and cry at the same time. You grow from this, and definitely not to what you think in advance. And, if you can do this with those you love it is even better.
Next week this Dutchman is 'forced' to go on a small pelgrimage from Tuscany to Rome by the same kids. And I already know we're all going to love it (and still wear our Sanriago shells).

I have walked the Camino de Santiago seven times, different routes. I have three different men to thank for my discovery of the Camino and for inspiring me to walk it and helping me to walk it. The first one is Rick Steves because I stumbled across his PBS travel show about the Camino and northern Spain one afternoon whilst channel surfing. I was captivated by the prospect of walking the Camino and vowed to walk it ASAP. That's when the second and third men came into play, John Brierley for his guidebook which I purchased and Emilio Estevez for his film, The Way which I also purchased online as it had just come out a year before. The Camino is my spiritual, religious and physical jump start every time I walk it.

Oh my gosh Emilio, you just said exactly what I said , the camino changed my attitude to social media completely, the only photo I took in the cathedral at Santiago was of my feet , it reminds me of how long I sat there in contemplation of my journey , it made me so mad watching everyone else talking a selfie in front of the alter, without actually looking at it and soaking it up. And I say the same thing now ' who are you taking that photo for?' When I got back , my husband said "i'll make you a cup of tea and you can show me all your photos" and I replied " I took hundreds, but they are all my memories, they won't mean anything to you..if you want to see them, I posted my top 10 on instagram each day with a description of my day. To this day, Ive not shown him one photo; and Ive never photographed a meal since!!

My sentiments exactly! I went to the various chapels at the cathedral, seeking peace, but there was a continuous line of people filing thru, randomly snapping photos and moving on, without ever seeing anything!
I took no photos that camino. No phone, no reservations, no nothing. Stripping away that clutter really helped me to Be Here, Right Now!

I loved my career helping people/families, but their problems are so dark, I didn't see how it affected me. After a 9-month sabbatical I realized how soul crushing it was. I guess it was about 6 years ago, a friend mentioned the Camino after watching The Way. Maybe it was the next year, I told him, I'd be interested in doing the Camino with him. Three years ago, our Camino got canceled. Two years ago, i heard Spain was opening up and within 3 weeks, we were starting the Del Norte Camino. Last summer, i rented the movie so my mom and I could watch it, so she could see what it was about. I did the Portuguese route in April and am going back to walk the Ingles in September. I'd like to presume both sides, since both sides are rife with corruption and their allegiance is primarily to campaign donors instead of their constituents. Since Christianity does not answer to a political affiliation -- only truth -- our politicians would be better guided by truth as opposed to their malleable and ever-changing culturally-influenced views.
