I have bone on bone osteoarthritis in my left knee and there is no way I could take that journey on. So, massive kudos to Bill for doing it, writing a book and making the movie. Saw the movie this morning. It was very good. It must be a wonderful experience to all of you who walk the Camino. I will definitely have to find out more about that wonderful place.
Been hearing of Bill's movie for a while now,. Every interview with him reveals more about himself. This has blown me away, the journey he plans to take and how humble he is about it all is a testament to the true Camino spirit and mindset. If I could watch the movie on the 16th I would take everyone I know but on the 16th of May (God Willing) I will be making my way over the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles on my first Camino. Been trying to do this for 20 years. Any fears and concerns I have are trivialised by listening to Bill. Thanks Rob, great interview, so much appreciated.
Absolutely Rob, will be sending it out to everyone. I may be wrong but this doesnt seem to be just about Bill's story, but about everyone that has ever walked the Camino and it gives voice to those that haven't had the means to tell it. And it sounds like the story isn't over.
That's a great observation Greg. I hadn't thought of it that way. Maybe that's part of the appeal. We see our own Camino journeys and struggles in it.........
Saw this beautiful, delightful movie today and so enjoyed it! As it happens I'm headed on my first Camino in September and am so excited and fearfull at the same time. Bill and his pilgrim friends have inspired me so much! The power of film to spark such joy and be so authentic is amazing!
Great great interview. You were prepared and asked questions that had substance and were authentic. Thank you Rob, for all that you do for us camino lovers with your channel and on the forum. Gracias peregrino :).
"If everyone walked the Camino, the world would be a better place." Bill Bennett Thanks for this poignant interview, Rob. Can't wait to see it (in the first 3 days) in the US.
I have just seen this movie, & absolutely loved it! It seemed to be an authentic experience of The Camino, & the part that stuck with me was when Bill says to the young woman, "Forgive yourself & ask for a miracle" - I need both at the moment! Well done, Bill Bennett!
So glad you enjoyed it Mary. Have you walked a Camino? I think what sets this movie apart is the authenticity. Largely due to using Pilgrims for many of the key roles. And mostly the Pilgrims Bill walked with 10 years earlier! It was the interaction of the Pilgrims that nailed it for me. How the relationships developed and deepened, the emotional stories they shared. The support and understanding they gave each other. That was so authentic and is part of the Camino that makes the journey so unique and transformative. For me at least. I recall setting out on my first Camino looking for answers. And realising after a week I didn't even know what the question was! The questions came after about 2 weeks......and the answers started to emerge after that. The movie captures that send of 'quest' so well.
Just finished my first camino and loved everything about it, even the pain and frustration when it presented itself. Hoping that the movie will still be showing when we get back to Adelaide as we will both be seeing it. My wife did her first (by herself) in 2018 and her take on it was that it was life affirming but not life changing. I think that's how I feel about it as well. My other quote on the camino is that it is like the United Nations but one that actually achieves something positive. People from a vast range of different countries, race and religions (not all pilgrims are Christians) walking together, helping each other out, talking about life and enjoying themselves with the common purpose of finishing. Sounds like world harmony to me 🙏👍
Saw the film just recently in a cinema in Brisbane's Western Suburbs. Only about a dozen people, all my generation, in the cinema. I laughed and teared-up on several occasions- something no movie has ever done in the one movie. That in itself speaks for the power of the message of the Camino. I hope to do it soon. I'm 73 and still walking OK so there's a chance for me yet. I want to do it on my own so I can share the experience with strangers. Buen Camino.
I recall hearing Dan Mullins play his song live on radio a few years back. Somewhere along the way. I saw the movie here in Sydney and was delighted to hear dans song feature at the end. A lovely movie 🎉
It's almost a 're-enactment' in a way too, isn't it? I saw a 'critic' complaining about the quality of the acting. But for me the 'actuals' were really 're-enacting' their original journey with Bill.
Rainy day in Newcastle and can't do much.I looked at the new movie releases and found your new movie. Tomorrow I'm taking my husband out. He doesn't know where we going.I will not tell him anything. After the movie, I want his opinion. After seeing a clip , gave me the motivation to do things I never did. Can't wait to see a movie tomorrow.Thank you.
Thanks for a great interview with Bill Bennett. Amazingly authentic, it is the only film that shows the Camino as it is! I didn't know that Jennifer Cluff is actually married to Bill .....a not to be missed movie and having walked a few Caminos I loved it and clapped at the end!!!!
Great interview Rob and what an amazing inspiring man Bill is, his planned Camino from his doorstep given the challenges is humbling to even begin to think about. You know the Camino has had many people walk it, and they all add to it's colour and Bill has been able to put that colour into a book and now a film and paint such a wonderful picture of the Camino for the whole world to see. I can't wait to see the film which I hope can somehow find it's way to little old Jersey!
Thank you Bill for a wonderfully authentic movie that inspires and creates deep thought. Wonderful moving performances from your actuals too. 🎉❤ love the boofhead aussisms.
Watched the film yesterday in New Zealand. Great story. I’m only staggered that he was able to film the Camino Frances so devoid of people. It’s normally like a shopping mall on a Saturday morning!
Makes sense. Mind you, anyone thinking about doing the Frances and expecting it to be empty like the movie will be in for a shock when they find it’s more like a conga line!
So True. I see it was the 3rd highest grossing Austrlian film this weekend! Well done Bill 🙂 I think it might just become THE Camino movie to see.......
Great interview! Currently in Burgos shaking off a virus, so we won’t be in Australia for the release, but all my family and friends have strict instructions to see the movie to connect with our Camino whilst we are walking!
Enjoyed your interview Rob. I saw the film premiere on the Gold Coast last week and loved it. I would have enjoyed seeing the film again in May but will be walking the Portuguese route at this time. I did not know that the 3 pilgrims acting in the film were the ones Bill met and walked with in 2013, that gives a whole new dimension to the film for me - wow, they were terrific as was Chris Haywood as Bill. I also loved Jennifer Cluff’s role.
@@robscamino it really was like walking the Camino with them. I really liked Bill’s comment about wanting to show that it can also be difficult depending on your body on any given day 😆 Caminos are romanticised sometimes so intending pilgrims need to know it’s also really tough at times (and addictive) 🌻
Good point. I think many have a rather romantic notion of what a Camino is, and perhaps approach it rather like going on vacation? But it's very hard for many of us. Physically, Emotionally and Spiritually. And sticking with it, giving ourselves up to it......maybe that is where the transformation starts to happen? Who knows? I just know that I feel an energy, freedom and sense of peace on Camino, that is quite unique. I think that comes out in the movie? I'd better go see it again LOL
Great interview! I haven’t seen the film yet here in the US. I did see the trailer, and remember thinking, 'wow! Bill did such a great job picking the three folks who played his walking friends. They look exactly as I had pictured them. And that never happens 'And now I find out they ARE the actual people haha! Brilliant! Can’t wait to see the film!
Many thanks for this. I just looked up some posts on Muxia and I have now decided to add this to my itinerary🙏 As luck would have it I have timed my walk to finish at the coast on the summer solstice. I now have to decide whether that will be in either Finisterre or Muxia. I hear Muxia is quieter and therefore this place is edging it slightly. Really appreciate all that you do for us all Rob👍
@@robscamino many thanks for this. I read the blog and watched the video. Quite an emotional journey you were on and this has been incredibly helpful to me. 🙏👍
If my Caminos are one thing.........they are very emotional journeys. 🙂 Maybe some of us keep that stuff all locked away for too long........and the Camino is a release? 😉
BTW I saw it advertised in a small cinema in Taranaki, NZ, and watched it in Stratford, Taranaki. Its on Saturday 15th, June at 5.50pm and again next Thursday at 5.50pm.
Thanks Rob.Bill is a great director. Fran O'Connor (Kiss or Kill) is an old friend of mine. Great to see that Chris Hayward has had a big turn around since his "Alvin Purple" series days, haha.
I've done about 17 caminos including thefrances twice.my over riding recollection was..crowds. in 2007 it was like a conga line of people infront and behind.i can only guess they were digitally removed in the movie
Bill remarked that they tried not to intrude on other Pilgrims and filmed early morning and later afternoon. The final scene in Santiago for example was shot at dawn. I imagine in 2007 it was busy from Sarria, but not earlier in the route surely?
@@robscamino indeed it was crowded..i started in vezelay and as soon as i reached sjpdp it was heaving. I had walked on and off with a french woman. She emailed me when she returned home to say she hurried to complete her camino because she found the crowds intolerable. I was surprised to see in the long shots not a single other person.
That's not uncommon Lilly. Many people even feel a sense of sadness or loss. I often feel it's an anti-climax. The reason I believe, is that it really is, all bout the journey. I talk about it on this video: ruclips.net/video/fc-pT639kZI/видео.html

A camino story has to be void of a story. Its more like an internal monologue. A mind thing with some encounters with the real world occasionally.
That would be an interesting style of movie..........
