I always dry brush my printed terrain. You can avoid accenting the build lines with a softer dry brushing, and dry brushing with the build lines instead of against them. On a lot of stone work, a little accent on the build lines actually looks good. A lot of stone has natural striation in it, and if you're doing ruins, the striations make it look even more weathered down. Thanks for all the vids. I'm starting to actually call my work skilled now. Between you, Black Magic Craft, and Luke Towan, I feel like I've been to a trade school for terrain.

Very nice result for what might be considered a broad, coarse approach! An efficient way to build lots of terrain when one's priority is game play. 😊
    Cheers, from Canada!

Printed PLA is porous so not considered food-safe; whiskey is self-sterlising, though...

Whiskey would probably kill bacteria but would not destroy the chemicals ingested. The latter are the issue though!

@@davidtetard5781 As I understand, PLA isn't toxic. You can smooth it to seal it using solvent. Pigment, on the other hand, is anyone's guess.

Something that can help with FDM prints is, prior to hitting with a primer, use a gloss varnish. It's not going to correct layer shifts, layer wobble, or anything large like that, but it does a decent job of masking the 0.2mm layer height.

    • @alexmorton5867

Mate! That table is well wicked! The trees are really cool and I can see a lot of uses for these in my KoW games 😉 The growth of 3D printing has come a long way, and has improved over the early attempts, I have 2 printers (although I’m still faffing about with my second), and have made small items for my games. I’m interested in seeing what you do with yours for sure! On a side note, will you, or have you, planed any terrain board vids for games (fantasy or otherwise), using 15mm miniatures? Awesome vid!

It seems to me that terrain modularity is extremely important in Warcry. I was wondering...do you think it's possible to create a terrain board with a rough surface and still be able to use modular terrain on it? If you want to be modular, do you *have* to use a battle mat or a GW board?

I like the idea of hanging your terrain boards on the wall, like 3D paintings :D
It looks like you could do with a wider neck on your flock container so you can get your mitt in.
Maybe you could flock over the whiskey tumbler foliage cups to create a more "realistic" look?

There is a new box set of trees scenery from Citadel that has recently been released. I think it is much improved over the previous set.
It's also $50 US versus $29 US for the old set.
I plan on picking up a set of each, but 3D printed ones would be much less expensive.

Doesn't take much to kill the GW trees... bloody awful looking things, who ever designed them must not have seen many trees in their life.
How do you manage to spray indoors and not get residue everywhere? Done it once and I had a fine dusting of skeleton bone on everything in the room, luckily it didn't stick, so wiped away easy enough.

If you want to get rid of the layer lines on a PLA print, and don't feel like sanding until you go mad, an acetone vapor bath should do the trick.

    • @Photoshop3000
      @Photoshop3000 5 лет назад

Andrew Amann acetone vapour smoothing only world for ABS. If you want to texture stone runes quickly and easily a can of texture spray paint works wonders such a rustoleum stone effect. You can then wash and dry brush the prints as normal. Though these textured spray cans are a bit pricy Another option would be to mix some fine sand with a water based polyurethaning varnish to make a home brew texture paint

I found this while looking to see if anyone's producing a 3D terrain table that can read a 3D file and use, say, the rods to adjust height and LEDs for coloration, features etc. I haven't found anything at all (cost?) but an 'instant' terrain (with peices) can be produced like a screen produces 2D. One that can be played also using actual play pieces and larger feature pieces. If I wasn't retired I'd look into starting my own business to do it, perhaps Danny could spread his wings...
