THIS is rap. THIS. Not the mumble crap that people listen to now. THIS. A story, artfully and skillfully told.

Common is rapping about the different stages of hip-hop. How it changed from east coast to the west coast. He uses H.E.R as a metaphor for a female, and how it changed her. Please check out the lyrics...🔥🔥🔥

He also talks about how he transitioned from being a fan and admirer of Hip Hop to becoming an MC.

The entire song is a metaphor, Her is Hip Hop. And if you follow her travels he’s basically providing a timeline of how hip hop has evolved to that point, NY started it, then went to the west coast I.e. NWA and the creation of gangsta rap, and then how he matured to respect her art from at its purest …. Song is an instant classic

This was a masterpiece describing how Hip Hop was changed and prostituted to poisonous Rap. H.E.R. is Hip Hop

I had never heard this before, this is great! It does remind me of the old school stuff and what a great way to deliver a message with an analogy or a metaphor. Glad I finally got to hear it.

That pure reaction from someone who didn’t grow up in the 70’s with Hip Hop and the correlation he was speaking on. I’m glad your mind was enlightened

Great reaction. One of his best songs. Ice cube got mad and dissed common w "westside slaughterhouse" to where common responded w "the b in you"

I remember Ice Cube heard this and dissed Common for the West Coast reference. Than Common fired back at Cube in a song called "The B*tch In You"....But obviously they got cool because they did a movie together.

The "did her in the park" line is in reference to hip-hop's beginnings in New York park's.

Hey guys, you want to hear some more blues music? I'm always ready to hear me some blues... especially if it's good blues music 🎼 "John Mayer - Gravity (Live in L.A.)" Fun fact: John induced Stevie Ray Vaughan into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Stevie Ray wasone of his heroes and mentors.

He was actually referring to hip hop in this song. Once you listen to it a couple times you get what he saying about hip hop. PS way to figure it out BJ

Dude spoiled the analogy for her. The most satisfying part of this is arriving at the realization that it’s an allegory. He spoiled it such that she can never experience it as an unfolding story the way he did.
