I was too young to remember. And to be honest, I was not into Hip Hop or Rap at the time this came out. However, I just read an article speaking of this song and the meaning behind it and it makes sense. I may be late to the authenticity of Hip Hop and Rap, but the ears don't lie, especially if you grew up in this Era of music. Hip hop and Rap had more meaning to it and now I understand more about the use of this song in the movie Brown Sugar, as it can mean different things to each person whose lives this song brings back memories. And that is why I am grateful to be an 80's child. Music is not the same, and the meaning to the message of what is said is lost, the use of the metaphor has gone. I could be wrong as I have not kept up and new artists maybe bringing back meaning to music and a message in the lyrics. We learn something new every day. I respect Common for this song/rap/rhyme and I love the history of my heritage. I need to learn more.
