This is a masterpiece of hip-hop. This song is so beautiful, and I will never forget seeing them perform on Chappelle's Show when I was younger. Hearing the studio version is different in that it sounds so much more sincere.
It's cool how Common represents one viewpoint and Kanye another contrasting it. But both paint the backdrop of an urban struggle, the hallmark of conscious rap at its finest
One of the best albums ever made. Dilla. Kanye at his best (imo). And Common somehow is always simple, complex, profound, and wise. All at the same time.
i listen to this album probably once a week still, for some reason I only heard this studio version like a month ago after listening to this album for maybe 8 years? lol I always had the Chappelle version
My buddy showed me this song when I was stoned late at night around a campfire. Life was simple back then. Chicagoland was cold, the fire was warm. They were good times. This song has soul.
So Soulful Kanye...Common Sense is a lyrical genius with that spoken word flow! Pure inspiration. Peep that BASELINE y’all! Boom Bap diced up with Soul!
We don’t give Dave chapelle enough credit for this part of hip hop but he blessed these artist an us got putting the young boys who wasn’t even suppose to be watching your show lol good looks for putting me on 🤟🏾
No one will probably see this. But as a teenager i went to the Graduation tour (Manchester UK, MEN area). Estelle played American Boy (before it was a hit) as the first support and got booed, one of the worst performances ive ever seen and ive been to huge festivals seen hundreds of artists, out of tune no presence skipped lines. Common followed to an understandable pissed off crowd. He absolutely killed it. He came out to a disheartened crowd and completely lifted a 21,000 person arena. Absolutely phonemanal performance, i knew a couple of tracks but the whole stadium was absolutely buzzing and i bet most didnt know Common. I will never forget how he turned 20k Brits with his artistry and performance. Kanye killed it and it was right after his mother died. That was when Graduation came out and to this day that was one of the greatest concerts ive ever attended. He came out to 20k+ pissed off English fans and completely turned the energy, an almost impossible feat. Respect a legend in artistry
I consider this one of the greatest albums of all time. Up there with Darkside of the moon, superfly, illmatic, the doors the doors, Nevermind, among many others
remember this song moving me from california to upstate ny when i was 15 years old. didn’t know anything and wanted to do everything. i remember hearing it again when i was 23 addicted to narcotics selling medication and starving. and now i listen to it again and i’m 27, with a career husband and child. car and lights that turn on when i want them to. and it is- will always be the song that gives me hope. easy work hard life; hard work easy life. 🤙🏽
I be somewhat frustrated when I blast this song in my dorm room, and my roommates friends barge in saying stuff like "Bre, what the f*ck are you listening to?" I understand that everyone's music taste will differ, but how could one not vibe to this?!
I wouldn't care nothing about any roomates. This was classic and the Kanye that made those dope soul beats before he completely lost his mind in Hollywood.
Damn this is my first time hearing the Studio version. No disrespect but to me the Chappelle's Show version will alway be MY version !! Classic track right here.
this is the studio version of the song, while the one on the album is a live version from Chapelle's show... this was on an original advance which also had a different version of "They Say" with a verse by Consequence instead of Kanye
+J. Ekberg I always hated that. Be was the 1st album of Common's I checked out. I rocked with that album & Finding Forever tough but always hated the audio quality dip on "The Food (live)" which was one of my favorite tracks. Even though I was introduced to it by the Chappelle performance. It was a bitch finding the studio version back then too.
I have the Be album since the Limwire day and that version had a live version of this song. 24 years later I learned there was a studio version of it lmao
This always brings me back to Chappelle show 2004!! Like a time machine!!! When Kanye was still a Producer Genius. I ONLY listen to pre 2004 kanye .lol

Matt Childress thats a common way for us to hear common even in commons, because the emotions he evokes are well... common.
If people were to tell the real truth about music, they would say this. It's up the with the likes of Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
This is also one of my favorite hip hop albums

Combining hip-hop and piano is beautiful! Been a fan of Common since before he loved H.E.R. If, you know, you know.
Classic Hip-Hop !!! This beat is so soulful !! And the lyrics are dope !!
This album introduced me to hip hop when it came out in 2005. Thank you Common!
So glad rap/hip hop is dead, you can only do the same thing 10000000 times and not be considered insane.
Piano riff is hard!!!!
Also the bassline in the background 🔥
kanye a genuis
The piano on selfish is dope too
That performance in the kitchen on the dave chappelle show was one of my favorites ever
They don't make music like this anymore. This track right here is Legendary
Kanye been making amazing melodies since 2004 🔥
Since earlier than that, he produced several songs on Jay-Z’s The Blueprint from 2001
Lol 2004? You BUGGGIN!! Obviously never heard Beanie Sigel "The Reason" before lol

He’s been making beats since the late 90’s
Since the mid 90s breh lol
One of Kanye’s best beats. This should be played at Sunday service
The sentiment of doing bad things because it bears heavy on you to be the man is detrimentally sad and relatable to my earlier years
