I love the question about targrt audience! Im a 42 yr old black woman in America and absolutely love the creativity of Rory Sutherland, and just found your podcast, have watched a few episodes over the past few days and subscribed 🔔 I also just went back to school And I'm taking evolutionary biology and have been finding it fascinating as well! Being that marketing is my jam, to hear Rory Sutherland talk about it gives me an excitement about the class, new ideas!
Saw the title, saw the dude I‘ve never heard of, both not making me excited at all. Experience tells me this could be great, and damn, it was!!! British humour at its best! And of course with absolute truth in it!
This is amazing! It is always great to see/listen to interviews that are not with “real estate/finance gurus” that think that they will teach us how to become millionaires in 1hr. This interview was full of sociology, history, arts, psychology - truly truly captivating
I recently started reading Rory's book, "Alchemy: The Power of Ideas That Don't Make Sense". One of the fabulous things about the Internet is that I can supplement his book with fascinating videos like this one, and also discover new RUclips channels like Ali Addaal's. Sutherland's book, by the way, is well worth obtaining. I have the audio version, which he narrates, and I recommend it highly.
What the heck, Ali! This guy is brilliant, and simplifies everything so well, and all you can do is say, "hmmmm".... You need to have him back on and ask questions.
Ali the slight fury and determination to wrap the pod up repeatedly was hilarious. It felt like saying goodbye to my Nan!, you britished it perfectly 😅
I use statistics to shine a torch in the dark to guide me when making a decision especially if I’m selling/marketing something. I bought a home many years ago in an area which was equidistant between 3 major North London hospitals as I figured that doctors would never be out of work! Over the years, the doctors status grew ever higher eg houseman to consultant to specialist until doctors stopped buying in the area altogether as they couldn’t afford it and moved out (overtaken over by bankers & hedgefunders). Improved schools, great transport links, a good house layout which made interior design to make a tiny house look huge a breeze, the worst house on the best road & on the fringe of some astronomically expensive areas did the rest. Statistics are important as an aide to marketing.
Agree with many commenters regarding Rory is all over the place, this podcast needed an edit. TBH, Ali lost control of this interview off the start. That said, I *DO* think that this interview was eye opening, reaffirming (I'm a math guy), and insightful and of all the deep dives I watched, THIS is the one chock full of concepts with examples. The value here is Ali has 15-20 interesting concepts with which to create a long-form video diving into these concepts... The Explore/exploit trade-off; RUclips is video wikipedia; User imagery vs target audience; Abilene Effect; The Amazon Algorithm / garbage name registered trademarks; The dynamics of choice architecture; Basic Stats concepts - issue recalibration, average vs the normal curve; Total agreement on Japanese toilet vs western toilet/transformative products/concepts - buy once vs buy 3 times and onward; “How frequently will this be used?” as a critical concept/Apps AS A BARRIER; Tech ignores the elderly - this is huge, as a tech - still things are moving fast - for the teens/tweens and ignoring the elderly - everyone (hopefully) becomes the elderly! Book reviews of the list Rory randomly refers to all over the interview. The list goes on! As an stand alone interview, agreed a bit long and winding, Ali was clearly overwhelmed by a force of nature that Rory is, but all in all a great lever for Ali to build on this for HIS BRAND!
Love the attempt to get control of the interview in minute 55 - “what is marketing?” Out of the blue haha A bit all over the place but good interview of you’re not looking for something too intense
Not gonna lie 5 minutes into the conversation I could have told you Rory has ADHD he has a lot of useful information but due to gin jumping around and never fully answering a question you’ll never get the information you’re stored to get. Like Ali asked what’s marketing this skipped that question nd started talking abt his own thing😂
After the mundane 'medical career question,' I sense that you could replace Ali with a Pink Hippopotamus, and Roy would continue the interview without a hint of hesitation...
Yes. Most of his insights could work for small businesses but on a smaller scale or in a more subtle way. e.g. Most small businesses are trying to solve a problem in a different way from large corporations.. Adapting the thinking that Rory has will induce thinking outside the box and from different thought provoking perspectives to then provide a better business point of view and marketing model.
Like standing under an idea shower! There were at least three things Rory said which made me say "oh hang on... that's really interesting" and one of them may have changed the my approach to the next 6 month's of my work. Criticism of him because he didn't stick to the question miss the point entirely! Also huge kudos to you, Ali for not trying to manage the interview too tightly. The man was throwing out pearls of wisdom like confetti, it would have been a massive mistake to try and rein him in!
I’m 14mins in and I’m looking around the office like guys y’all need to listen to Roy talk. This man is brilliant. Can’t believe TikTok brought me here.😅
Rory really runs the line between madness and genius, he is so unconventional which makes him equally engaging and completely mind bending and incoherent but if you can separate the wheat from the chaff he has some great insights
I think he's stunningly coherent, It's just that his mind wanders off to seemingly off topic ideas or minute details, then comes back and lands it like a F** genius haha
I like Rory but this was hard work to listen to. He has so many preprepared stories he spews out in such a chaotic way without really listening back. Ali seemed bored and frustrated.
Mind blown over and over again! The thing with great thinkers is, they just lift the veil you didn't think was there and have you see things as they truly are. Brilliant, garrulous, fun guest!
Rory is so right around minute 59 talking about how companies only do what's measurable and not necessarily what's important, which I have noticed when taking customer surveys. They only ask the questions to the parameters they can track and control easily within their organization, instead of the questions I always want to see which include a little free type text box to explain what you like or don't.
The stories and some insights were interesting, but you have to go through a lot of (ok!), "X is stupid", shortcuts of speeches/thoughts. So I miss some subtleties in the insight delivery. I felt that Ali was not as much at ease as with the other guests (just an impression). Not sure why Peterson, and Brexit came into the conversation about marketing... In conclusion, the questions were well prepared, the stories were kind of interesting, the rest has to be taken with at least one grain of salt, because the guy is definitely biased in his thoughts. Thank you Ali and team anyway!
The consumer psychology bit reminded me of a behavioral theory from fighting video games: never nerf, only buff. Making characters weaker to balance the game has a net negative effect compared to buffing less-winning characters
It was £25 a day just to sit at a desk. So it was too pricey. If they set it lower and then made money from selling me coffee and food, it would have been better marketing. But to charge me £25 before I've even sat down, was too difficult for most people to chin, even if the coffee was free. I'd love to hear Rory's view on it, but I think that's what he'd probably say. Although, I'm not a marketer, so maybe not.
If you are to look Serious then you are not to be in the Marketing and advertising? Why is the field predominantly ruled by the comedians? What is this? A advising session of the “classic institution”? Now selecting b/t arts and science in college is something new!! Keep on experimenting and remain there 8 years for a 4 years intended period.
Dominos is actually accurate I used to work at a model store, meaning we tested new methods for the company. My general manager would say we were a tech company that sold pizza
About 10:30 "ring up someone I know." For those who don't know, it refers to dial-up phones. 😁😁 Love that Rory refers to Google and 'ring up someone' in the same sentence.
If there are any unemployed medical graduates desperate for a job, love sunshine and blue skies, Australia is HELLA short of doctors. It's insane. People cannot get in to see their gp's for months, and then those poor gp's are exhausted, falling apart and going on indefinite leave. For chronic pain sufferers and other chronic conditions, as well as people with serious health concerns, and kids that need to see a doctor, we're all panicking, frustrated, and downright terrified. COME TO AUSTRALIA. PLEASE!!!!!
My goodness Ali, Rory was really impressed with you. 😁😁Not only as an alumni of Emmanuel College Cambridge, but it went from mild interest to veneration when you listed your degrees in medicine. In all his interviews, I've never seen this admiration on his face before. ✌✌🫶 Great interview BTW.
I love Rory, but I have to say the long adverts are really annoying. I pay for RUclips premium so I don't have to listen to ads because I don't come here to be told to buy Huel or whatever 😂 Unfortunately I won't be returning 😘
Seems all the RUclips shows have the exact same guests! I love this guest btw ..but have seen him in about 5 other videos recently. Unfortunately this host can't handle someone like Rory. The host lacks humour and charm .....sorry to say it how it is....
Ali, could you please add more sponsored promotions to your videos? Nobody wants to hear what Rory has to say, hearing you promoting WeWork is much more interesting.
Rory is amazing and full of insights, great inspiration. Ali, you have to "learn" and mature as moderator to be able to manage the flow of Rory's speech and ideally be able to even guide it towards some key talking points 😂

Ali, have you tried a hydrogen water maker yet?
This lad should be better at interviewing. Asking shitty questions. Tut tut
These are shitty questions

Love Rory, has such an uncanny capacity for breaking down complex concepts into breath-taking intuitive speeches.

I love how Rory is like an unstoppable tornado of wisdom that cannot be contained
Sounds about right
For real, this episode was weirdly chaotic but very interesting.
me too

I've started listening to it after seeing him on a few podcasts and its absolutely brilliant
Oh my word! I love this guy!! He is such a character 😊
What the heck, Ali! This guy is brilliant, and simplifies everything so well, and all you can do is say, "hmmmm".... You need to have him back on and ask questions.
Hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm 😂😂
I'm the same age as Rory. His brain is spectacular.
Really needed his views after Chat GPT being so rampant....THANK YOU!!!
Ali the slight fury and determination to wrap the pod up repeatedly was hilarious. It felt like saying goodbye to my Nan!, you britished it perfectly 😅
Last year I bought the Audible version of Alchemy, just a fascinating book.
Rory Sutherland needs to be up there with Stephen Fry as National Treasure.

I think Ali is trying to do unedited raw podcasts in the vein of JRE so it would make sense for him to edit it. He can however improve his technique.
Rory is wild in every interview where the hell have you been?
Fantastic talk!
Long live rory. Much grace much peace 🎉
Rory- brilliant as usual. Many thanks.
Rory is always interesting to listen to. You should think about getting Gad Saad on your podcast one of these days.
Holy God, This is more than gold!
Sutherland is brilliant

Wow, I didn’t know Hagrid was so smart!
I loved this guy ❤

Hello and thankyou
Do you think a lot of Rory's insights are applicable for any business that isn't a large corporation?
Yes. Most of his insights could work for small businesses but on a smaller scale or in a more subtle way. e.g. Most small businesses are trying to solve a problem in a different way from large corporations.. fastest 2 hours of my life
This time. 14.00
54:44 worst change of subject EVER
This show had 4 endings, and after each he just kept talking xD
Do what is good and right. The weight 🤔🧐😇
Is Rory wearing a tepee?
I absolutely love Rory Sutherland's insights, I could listen to him for hours.
He has a very convincing presentation style doesn't he
Same
Me too. I think I've pretty much ran out of interviews and audiobooks of his to listen to!
His talk at TED is worth listening to.
I have listened to him for hours.
This man is a genius, but also the personification of ADHD 😂
I love how media containing Sutherland starts off as an interview and quickly turns in an hours long monologue!
Like standing under an idea shower! There were at least three things Rory said which made me say "oh hang on... that's really interesting" and one of them may have changed the my approach to the next 6 month's of my work.

Completely agree
Which one changed you’re approach
Which one changed your approach? :)
Exactly‼️🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
I wish he would simplify and communicate better. You can tell he has droplets of adhd because the way he communicates is all over the place.
I’m 14mins in and I’m looking around the office like guys y’all need to listen to Roy talk. This man is brilliant. Can’t believe TikTok brought me here.😅

Rory is an absolute marketing genius!
I love his insights, but he doesn't complete a thought. Switching fatigue, and not getting one answer to one question
@-DeepDivewithAliAbdaal 😂
It happens to those who read a lot & have diverse knowledge.
This interview is really great. Thank you so much!
From now on I just listen to Rory Sutherland
Disagree with the youtube premium i love watching ads for hook ideas, inspiration etc - i used to hate adverts until I got into marketing
Rory is also a fashion icon. I need that sweater!
I was thinking the same thing, love the sweater.
Whenever someone points out how many of us aren’t subscribed I purposefully don’t subscribe lol it’s so annoying. Great interview though
Weird flex but ok
Omg your opening lines are a direct take from diary of a ceo . …not orig at all
The consumer psychology bit reminded me of a behavioral theory from fighting video games: never nerf, only buff. Making characters weaker to balance the game has a net negative effect compared to buffing less-winning characters
In that sweater, Rory is a human Garfield - smart, cunning, witty and just impossible not to love
Skipped every ad during this talk about effective advertising
please, no huel :( let's try that for a month and then do the blood tests...
All I can hear is the hosts nose down the microphone............. 🤦
He talks a lot and get out of context. His ideas are not well organized 😅
That WeWork sponsorship aged bad... after they just filed for bankruptcy.

46:25 nobody talking about this casual burp? 😂
Can you do a color-grading tutorial for this? It looks so creamyyyy
Interesting seeing Ali react to conservative/right wing philosophy from Rory haha

Rory Sutherland - a national treasure
Dominos is actually accurate I used to work at a model store, meaning we tested new methods for the company. My general manager would say we were a tech company that sold pizza
Please spend 5 minutes organising mic positioning and invest in a pop shield if you insist on nasal breathing down the mic. Much love.
Agreed
This guy described me perfectly at 1:04:24 😂
Rory is a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for sharing this moment.
God i love this man’s sweater.
1:08:38 Add free RUclips is absolutely amazing.... But we get it for FREE here in Somalia 🇸🇴👍🏻🥳
Does anybody find this Ali guy looking so fake in his videos?
15 mins in and he has lost me. Maybe that's why so many adverts these days don't gel and are crap?
Would have loved to see his take on Bud Light.
I love this guy I can’t believe I never heard of him.. you just don’t know where he is going to go next
About 10:30 "ring up someone I know." For those who don't know, it refers to dial-up phones. 😁😁 Love that Rory refers to Google and 'ring up someone' in the same sentence.

2:02:25 James Hoffman must be so happy he spent all that time with you teaching you about coffee 😅
Love Rory - you two had a good conversation here
He's way more fun than chatgpt. 😊
I LOVE HIS SWEATER.
My goodness Ali, Rory was really impressed with you. 😁😁Not only as an alumni of Emmanuel College Cambridge, but it went from mild interest to veneration when you listed your degrees in medicine.
In all his interviews, I've never seen this admiration on his face before. ✌✌🫶
Great interview BTW.
Glad you've gone back to a nicer thumbnail on these podcasts. And fantastic guest, I love Rory! His books are great...
Hilariously brilliant. I could listen to him for days😂
The US adopts your tax policy,. they withhold too much of your tax and give you a rebate in April. You should see the marketing campaign
Thanks RUclips algorithm for this one!
What a great Interview - love it - work for over 25 years in that field (and similar). Felt like a remedy to listen to you guys. Thx for that.
I love Rory, but I have to say the long adverts are really annoying. I pay for RUclips premium so I don't have to listen to ads because I don't come here to be told to buy Huel or whatever 😂 Unfortunately I won't be returning 😘

I don’t know what I just listened to for a couple of hours but I loved it
The Canadians have Jordan Peterson, but we (Brits) have Rory. We win because he's far more interesting.
Ali, can you please confirm if Rory is hanging a vape on his neck?!
Towards the end of the interview, you can see him using it to vape.
Trust me, nobody can do that with Rory, not Steven Bartlett, not Chris Williamson. Nobody can control Rory haha, he goes where he wants.
Loved this episode! The whole episode was a tangent upon a tangent but fun to listen to!
How many times did you edit out That’s a good place to end😜 glad you kept tape running 👏
Nice interview though the sound is a bit echoey. Need some egg cartons … or super models and champagne.
where is the cardigan from?😁
1:04:41 Damn why did he describe the target audience of this pod and it’s ME 😅🤣😭
