So your video definitely helped day 1. I think idid pretty good. I didn't stall, but down shifting... Grinding hears a bit. I have a ?. I'm used to downshifting to a stop. He was having me stop in 6th gear. According to the test. I can't clutch in until I'm stopped. In a 5 speed. If my RPM gets low. I shift down. It was really akward for me to not have the rpms higher. I feel more control when I have engine speed. I pissed him off clutching before I stopped but it felt appropriate to what I felt the engine doing. He says it won't stall out. Which It didn't, but it just didn't feel right. Any tips?
Your instructor is correct. Try this the next time you're on the road: downshift to 6th gear and then put both feet on the floor. Watch as the truck pulls itself forward with no input from you. This is an exercise I also use with my students. Why? Because our natural tendency, when going through a turn, is to push in the clutch. We do so because we think the vehicle will die during our turn. Bad idea. Pushing the clutch in kills your RPM needle. I want you to know that the truck won't die in 6th gear through a turn. So, place your feet on the floor after downshifting to 6th and then watch as the truck pulls you through the turn all by itself. These trucks are big on torque, which is what gives the truck its pulling power. (Don't try this exercise with a loaded trailer, Joey). As I said in our 10 speed shifting video, slow down before you downshift. Your downshifts will be a lot easier, I promise.
Been driving for 44 years and have driven lots of 10 speeds. I don't remember them having a high reverse. Is that high range reverse? And how hard would high reverse be on the clutch? I always liked the 15 speed transmission because you had the option of deep reduction reverse, and I told my students to use it when backing, because it was slower and safer and easier on the clutch. So, who would use high reverse on a 10 speed?
Awesome videos Mike. They really help me out. I’m starting ups feeder training next week. After 17 years of delivering. Where can I download your 10 speed shifting diagram? There’s others out there but I like the layout of yours. Thanks 🙂
Thank you. We have a more in-depth shifting video, also. Check it out if you have some time: ruclips.net/video/z6AKaBeRNU8/видео.html Thanks for watching and commenting today, Benjamin.
Great explanation it's sad all trucks are going to automatics.... all the respect is gone in trucking.... 10yrs ago every driver you passed would give ya a wave now your luck if you dont see the balls deep into their phone...... governors got these new guys riding side by side holding hands up and down the highway..... it's a damn shame these stupid ass drivers and their 5lbs headsets are a joke
Don't worry is not bad after you pass test they will give you automatic. i only did manual 2 months after my company got automatics lol. Last 2 years been on automatic
First of all "Trust in God" and give up cussing. And never give up man! I'd love to help you, but alas am too far away. Any questions? I will try to help.
Learning this 10-13-15-18 speed nonsense with any kind of proficiency is my biggest concern going into CDL training, and I don’t want a restriction on my license. I’ve never driven a manual trans at all, but I hear going in as a blank slate helps at least. Just have to remember it’s all repetition and muscle memory like anything.
You're running in to a problem that happens a lot in trucking schools: they tend to hire expert truckers, not expert teachers. Experts are very good at what they do, but that doesn't mean that they can TEACH what they know to other people. Teaching is a different animal. It takes patience. Most truckers are not patient. Keep your chin up and watch our videos. We have Pre-Trip, Backing Maneuvers, and Road/Shifting videos. Let us know how you're progressing and send me any questions that your instructors don'y answer to your satisfaction. Peace!
@@godmusicandspirit yes I did graduate in 2017. Been driving since then. . I became a trainer 2yrs ago and I learn so much as I teach others. I realize that there is never max information. The more I drive the more I encounter challenges and improve myself.
Now I no how to drive because of your videos I'm able to drive thanks
Thanks. first day in cab tmrw. I'll keep this in mind;)

What does 10-R and Hi- R mean? Please Reply. Thanks!
Rafsan Islam lo-R and Hi-R means low reverse and high reverse. Basically how fast you can reverse.
Can you do a in depth video for a 13 speed?
Kevin Lee it's not a ten speed plus 3 ten speed you go to 1 in over 13 you go to 2nd in over
So I drive a 5speed pickup but I cannot rev match for my life. I want to learn to drive a 10 speed but I'm afraid of floating gears.
Enter "10 speed shifting CDL College' in the RUclips search field. Our video has helped MANY people learn to shift. Thanks, Dustin.
floating gears in a big truck is much easier than a pickup
