    best video on the subject EVER.. double clutching is something so many drivers just kind of "know how to do" but can't explain to me the specifics of what it is they're actually doing.. so many details in this video that are super helpful: like not depressing the clutch all the way, the sweet spot on the tachometer, how to recover from a missed gear etc.. this video is a real game changer. thank you guys! I've gotten this far with my CDL only because of the amazing community here on RUclips and helpful creators like these guys that are willing to make such detailed five star content like this.. my road test is on the 6th.. wish me luck guys.. thanks for everything

    Been driving OTR for 12 years, with a total of about 26 years driving tractor/trailers. For those of you that are here trying to figure out how to change gears in a big-truck, you are going to hear 374 different ways to change gears. Everybody has their own way. I've never "double clutched". I only use the clutch when starting from a dead stop, but hey, whatever works for you. When I first started, I shifted by watching the rpm's. Every truck has it's own personality, and will shift in it's own way. Now, I just shift by ear and feel. Here are some things to always remember.... Don't lug the transmission!! Keep your rpm's up (between 1200 & 1500 rpm). DO NOT SLAM OR MASH the gears. When you are between gears (going from one to another) don't jerk it into gear. GENTLY pull the gear into place. If it won't go, just rev-up and gently pull into gear. The same is true for down-shifting. Good luck, I know it's a little frustrating trying to learn.

    • @carlospopovich

      You have a choice. I chose to learn on a manual in school so I will test on a manual. You can choose to learn on an automatic and you will test on an automatic however you will have a restriction on your license that will not allow you to drive a manual. 95% of the carriers now have automatic trucks. Some of the smaller "mom and pop" carriers still have manual transmission. I test on October 29th. Wish me luck!🙄

      Yes! This is an endemic response from poor teachers. "LISTENiING" involves several functions in learning, not just ears. Therefore the proper instruction before, during and after a skill is crucial in locating the bodies total ability to "listen" and respond accurately. This takes patience, timing and practice. Often times poor instructors will not have prepared a student in advance of the maneuver and then when the student is panicking during a skill, they become frustrated and blame the student for not listening. ( This is not to say there are not students who don't listen, or are poor students, but I am speaking to those who are trying in earnest to learn and trying to listen but are receiving confusing or incomplete instruction). Then the student internalizes this and probably becomes further frustrated themselves. While there are alot of decent, accomplished people teaching, not everyone is being taught how to instruct. You can be a great trucker and a not so great instructor. (There are some people who are in teaching positions who are not fit to be there as well, but I am not speaking about that at the moment). So, students, learn from these wonderful videos, prepare your minds in advance and practice the shift pattern in a chair as they showed. Get muscle memory and think through the process everyday while in school for a few moments at home and have patience and focus while learning on the road. Some instructors do more harm than good. If you have one of these try to stay calm and remember your skills from these videos. (Try to look like you are listening to your instructor while focusing on what you learned from this video!) If you have a good teacher listen well to them, if you don't, learn from information like these videos as best you can.. Be safe, stay calm, and rewatch these tutorials everyday. To those having bad school experiences who are bright individuals that are trying hard to learn in a poor environment, know that it is real, you are not imagining it, there are many of these places taking advantage of the opportunity to make money. Unfortunately, many of their teachers are also abusive. But you cannot win there so keep your head down, learn any way you can and make it through that horrible experience and get your CDL hopefully. Then try to learn the best you can with a potentially terrible trainer on your first job! Someone should do some investigative journaling on these scam schools. Thanks to cdlcollege for their integrity, clarity and professionalism. They are saving people's lives literally.

    I just want to say that I've never shifted a manual trans in my life. I started CDL school this past Monday, and our first day on the pad was yesterday. Within an hour, I was upshifting from 3rd to 6th and downshifting from 6th to 3rd without any grinds or missed shifts, and it's all thanks to this video and my instructor's patience. I'm at a great school with 1:1 student to instructor ratio. Great guys all around, and small class size. Still have another 4 weeks to go, but I'm very pleased. Shifting was my worst fear, even moreso than backing or pre-trip, and this video put my mind at ease on day 1. Thanks!

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 лет назад

      Very cool that you found a patient instructor! Think about this: if your instructor was impatient, it would manifest itself as EMOTION. Most students are intimidated by the size of these trucks. Intimidation emanates from emotion. So, if the student and instructor are both in an emotional state of mind, the learning process breaks down because it is largely logic-dependent. The fact that your instructor remained calm greatly assisted you in learning what you needed to learn. You're fortunate. There are a lot of instructors who have no patience and end up hindering the learning process because they are, essentially, selfish. They suck.
      We truly appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment, Jason. If you need help with backing maneuvers, we have a RUclips playlist you may be interested in: ruclips.net/video/X7iVz2vbogM/видео.html

      He truly is a great instructor. He finds ways to make you laugh to ease the tension and nerves of getting behind the wheel of a semi. He encourages mistakes because, as he puts it, "you can only learn how to fix something if you mess it up". He also said he's not an instructor for the money. He simply enjoys the looks on students' faces when "they finally realize they can drive a truck". Definitely lucked out on this one.

    Life Saver!.!. Took a 30 year break in driving to become a cop; 2 speed rear ends were the norm back then. After retirement I went back to driving. Everything is automatic for the first 3 years. Then yesterday they sent me 200 miles to retrieve a tractor, because, “You can drive the old stuff with a clutch.” Hmm, custom knob with no shift pattern and a badly leaking top radiator hose. While facility mechanics got the replacement part, I learned the transmission was an Eaton and probably a 10 speed. After starting to watch a number of terrible amateur videos I found yours! Hallelujah! Made it back through rush hour traffic. Not a pretty sight and the driver’s mirror fell apart at one point (ALWAYS carry Gorilla Tape and flex ties). I did have to pull to the shoulder and start over 3 times, so I’m avidly rewatching the downshift and missed shift segments over and over today.

    I am starting a new job with a good company. I told them I have not driven in 3 years and am a little rusty with shifting. I drove an Automatic for 2 years. The company is bringing an automatic for me; I did not ask them to. Now after this video I am wish they didn't. All the things I was missing came together. This video rocks!

    Great refresher video if you have not been driving trucks for a while. One suggestion. Maybe you already have it, but if this video specified a 5 minute section on shifting before turning, it would be great. Students need to know how soon to start to plan the slow down before a turn, to avoid the easier neutral slow down over gear slow down and that when a non-stopping turn is made, you should not be any higher than 4th gear when making the turn.

I got training from a CDL school but I did not find their videos or most of their trainers to be helpful at all. I learned everything from your videos and with just a few hours of road training that were not good at all except with of their trainers, I passed the road test. So thank you again for making such great and helpful videos and please continue your hard work!

    Totally was against manual cars because I get motion sickness. Literally started Smith & Solomon last month (cdl B upgrade to class A) immediately had a change of heart once I got to the straight back maneuvering lane (manual). Now I’m fully doing the road test maneuvers manually, and love it. Next is this part so I can practice driving on the road, and this my 1st time viewing this video… thank you for this detailed video🫶🏽💅🏽

I will be referring to this video while learning to operate a ten speed truck transmission. Thank you so much.

    I SECOND " Best video on the subject EVER !!!" Long story short, I just started truck driving school 2 weeks ago. Naturally not knowing a thing about how to shift a semi truck. The school instructor's instructions were " 1500rpm cluth up 1000 clutch down. " I had no issues clutching up it was the clutching down where my issues were at. I would miss the window of opportunity to down shift to a lower gear. After attempting to put the transmission in to gear the instructor would just say reve it up and he would throw into any old gear and ask what gear are you in. Keep in mind I'm behind the wheel the truck is moving forward and I confused as @#$%. My answer was " I don't know why don't you tell me since you threw it into gear " this happened for the first 3 days of behind the wheel training. And one day I was on RUclips looking for tutorials on shift and what do you know, your video was the first one to come up. I watched it it was well explained and I took what I saw and used it the very next day. Especially the math part of the video. Even though I missed the window off opportunity to down shift I had the math part dowm "1+5=6 ( 6th gear ). So on and so forth, the instructor asked what I did over night to improve my skill. I answered I took a math class and left it at that. I shared this video with all of the students attending that day and urged them to share it with any new student walking into the yard. THANK YOU 😊

    Great video. I saw it out of curiosity about double clutching and it taught me about car shifting more than many car driving videos. The lack of sync in trucks makes me understand more about the benefits of sync in cars and how best to benefit from it. Thanks for such an informative video.
