    Got my D901 today and it is cool. Sounds great. Been getting most of my usual stations on fm & even on am. I intend to experiment with a Kaito reel antenna to see if it picks up any SW signals (my other small battery rechargeable radios don't get much if anything indoors). I heard the 10mhz time signal with the whip, so it's a good sign. The tuning is a little twiddly, have to back up and try again, but once on frequency the am & fm stations sound clear. Impressed. Want to try the XHDATA D368. Thankyou for the gr8 reviews.

    Quick suggestion. Sangean HDR-15. Awesome radio. Was able to pick up WGN 720 AM 565 miles away, also picked up an AM station in Canada, was about 950 miles away… in Tennessee, crystal clear, inside near electronics and power sources. Also does HD Radio, RDBS, and Aux In. Highly encourage you to check it out! I got it for $65 on Amazon. Worth every penny.
    I’ve got two Sangean radios, one for 15 years, still like new. Great quality.

    Today I got the D-901 and for the money it's a bargain. The radio works better on all bands than all my radios in the same price category but (this is a big but) the mp3-player has 2 drawbacks (as far as I can tell after 2 hours with the radio).
    1. After pressing the Pause-button, the device is switching after some time to a kind of power saving mode and the LED-display switches off. After pressing any button, the recent mp3-file is played from the beginning.
    2. After switching off the device while playing a mp3-file, the player is remembering the last file but it's played from the beginning and not from the last position.
    All my other even cheaper radios with mp3 playback are doing it right and play mp3-files from the last position.
    All in all the D-901 is a good device for its price.

    Just ordered one. I have most of the XHDATA and Sihuadon radios and I like them. Got my 901 for £14!
    I think Iron Man is defo the man with the master plan. He works for me now and sources all kinds of radios for me!
    UPDATE: Received this radio and I’m very impressed. It’s good value for what it does. The Bluetooth and all bands seem to work well and in typical Radiwow fashion.
    One big criticism - the battery. Life on the one supplied is not overly brilliant if you are a serious listener. I will compare the D-cell life and get back to you.
    Be warned - If you buy an upgraded 18650 IT WILL NOT FIT! They haven’t accommodated for this which is a bit short sighted and sort of infringes the portability of the radio if you don’t have d-cells or charging location.
    However, the radio is great and is my go-to for daily news and listening.Highly recommend!

    I just ordered one. I find this radio unusually attractive. The external antenna jack is a very big attraction for me. More portables should have this feature. A reel-out antenna can be a huge help with these DSP radios on SW. I'll tolerate the quirky tuning. I'm very familiar with that. Thanks for the great review!

    At 8:11 you say that there is no FM/BT/MP3-Stereo but my D-901 (with 12/2021 Passed-sticker) is playing stereo in all these modes.
    Maybe your radio is defective or the headphones were not plugged in properly.
    There is also another problem with the MP3 playback.
    The player is playing the files in a kind of random order, ignoring folders and the date when the file was created (like other radios in this price category do). I haven't checked but it seems that the MP3 files are played in alphabetical order.

    I just bought one of these radios from Amazon and I’m very happy with it. I’m having one issue thought, the charging indicator light does not work. Also there is no indication of battery state of charge, it just shuts off when it’s low. I tested it after the radio shut down and the battery was about 2.7 volts. I really can’t complain I got it for under 20 dollars. It was listed on Amazon for 22.99 with a 15% coupon. Thanks for the heads up on this radio!

  • @davidrhodes9997
    @davidrhodes9997 Год назад +2

    Thanks for the great review. I also got one of these about a year ago. It's actually not too bad. FM is ok on this. I found that the audio on AM has a bit too much bass for pleasant long time listening though. On SW this is quite sensitive and selective enough (for a budget radio): it's similar to my Xdata D-328. The main thing is that the audio on SW has a fair bit of bass and virtually no treble. It can be hard to listen to for extended periods. Also, as you've explained, tuning on SW can be a bit frustrating as you have to tune back and forth to centre in on the station - a bit of a negative for DSP radios. As you've explained, it's OK but not great. Conversely, this can definitely pick up the stations (short wave) and is way better than some other budget radios. BTW, the torch is impressive. My guess is at least 200 lumens of a quite nice white light.
    I've deleted my original comments (from a year ago) and reposted them here as I need to add the following: After 1 year I got tired of recharging the battery. I just put in 2 D cells and, just out of curiousity, I checked the power consumption when the radio was completely turned off. UNFORTUNATELY I found that it was using 2.3mA of current. That means that a 1500mAH battery will last 1500 / 2.3 equals 652 hours or 27 days. So even if the radio is not used the battery will be consumed by the (poorly designed) circuit. D cells will last maybe a few months. This may be okay if you don't mind charging it every few weeks but that's no good for me. I have thrown the radio out. I wont even give it away!

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  Год назад +4

      Interesting, I would hack mine and install a hard wired power switch to the battery compartment. A Master Off switch. No current, no drain. I have never thrown a radio out, I feel I can always salvage them for parts :)

    • @davidrhodes9997
      @davidrhodes9997 Год назад

      @todderbert Yes. I could have hard wired a switch especially as it's a large radio with no memories or clock to worry about - good point!

    I'm listening to USB audio recordings on the d901 with it plugged into the charge cable with the battery removed. Is it healthy to use it this way for long periods? I notice the volume is way lower plugged in that way and has to be turned up to max to have it at a good listening level.

    • @todderbert

    It sounded like a regular radio to me. How does the dsp sound different than an analog radio? What exactly is the step you were referring to, & are dsp radios the only one's that step? Or do analog radios also step.

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  2 года назад +1

      DSP = Digital Signal Processor , these usually have a noticeable click "step" sound as you advance the dial. They are normally great at locking on a station, and avoiding drift that a normal analog receiver can have. Analog receivers handle faint signals much nicer, because they don't cut out when the signal gets weak. DSPs tend to do this, which can be annoying if you are trying to hunt for distant stations.

      It would be safe to remove the 18650 if you are going to use D Cells. I tested the D Cell connectors with just the 18650 installed, and I could read the voltage of the cell. If you use D Cells, the Light may not work. The directions state it may be too low of voltage when using the Dry battery bay.

      It operates on the included single 18650 battery. So no need to buy batteries right away. If you want, you can also run the radio with two D cells, and take the 18650 out of the radio. This is optional, and nice to have in an emergency.

    I'm out in central California and using the D901 indoors with a Kaito clip on wire extending out to the patio. I'm picking up 4.840mhz coming in & out. If I had a better antenna wire outside it would probably come in really well.
    I tested the Kaito wire with a Retekess V115, HR11S and a Supersonic sc1080bt. Not anything on the two Retekess radios. The Supersonic did pick up 4.840 at the fringes but it was pushed out by competing signals. The D901 seems like it could be a good low cost radio for people who like an analog tuning knob instead of digital buttons.

    Why does this have two FM bands on it?

    • @todderbert

      Some areas in the world use the lower parts of the FM band as well as the one we are used to in the USA.

      @@todderbert I know that Russia uses the lower extended part of the FM band, all the way down to 64 MHz. For the digital display Tecsun receivers the 64 MHz setting is selected by holding down one of the dedicated keypad buttons while the radio is in the standby mode.
      Do you find the FM2 band more difficult to tune in between stations, given that 87 MHz starts about halfway down the dial? I should think so as the FM2 crams all the stations towards the lower half of the scale.
      This is why analog dial SW radios split the coverage into several bands - the more bands the easier it is to tune in to stations, without resorting to feature a fine tuning capability.

    Some of these DSP radios drive me mad with this tuning muting. DSP can be the worst thing ever in any radio especially when it comes to SSB, I have yet to hear a good sounding DSP radio on SSB, oh, wait, there is one, the Sangean ATS-909x2, I think this uses DSP but not 100% sure.

    This one doesn't appear to have any way of running it on electric via a wall wart, just batteries. Otherwise it would have been worth a go.
