  • Plein air landscape oil painting in Cornwall, on a January morning.
Hi there everyone - it's felt like ages since I took my French easel out into the landscape for some plein air oil painting. Rain and stormy weather over Christmas meant I only had chance to pop out with my sketchbooks for brief periods.
The sun was shining this morning though - so I made the most of it with this small oil painting looking towards Carn Brea.
Like the video? Why not buy me a coffee?

Thank you Elisabeth - I can work in most weathers, hate the rain though!

I've come back to this for another look (and best wishes to Basil, hope he's better than he was 5 months ago). I conclude I couldn't do this - it's the chasing of the clouds I couldn't do, leaving aside all the physical stuff about getting out there in the open air in the first place: you can see why people use photographs - their clouds don't move! Trouble is, they then look as though they wouldn't move in their paintings, and it is indeed very difficult to make a sky look alive if you've not painted it from life. But there we are, one tries. Anyway, came back because watching you paint, and listening to your thoughtful mutterings, inspires and encourages me to get the paints out again: even though I have a lot of paintings lying about ...

So happy to see this plein air video to pop up! Lovely painting! I see some new colors on your palllete as well. NH got its first snowstorm of the season today…finally! I hope you get some snow soon, too. Sounds like hungry chickens in the background at the end? Hope you’ve had a lovely & relaxing holiday with your family and wishing you a very creative and prosperous 2024!

Hi Andrew ... really like the abstract qualities of the clouds using the side of the brush and the pallet knife scraping produce nice shapes and atmosphere of the sky ...

Beautiful painting. Thank you so much. May I ask what size/type that smallest Rosemary brush is (do they call it a rigger?) (the one you are doing the fine lines with) I do a lot of 6x6 inch canvases and lack a good quality tiny brush so find it nigh impossible to do those very fine marks. Thanks in advance.

Where was Basil? We want Basil.... Sorry, one does get trivial and non-aesthetic. All the same (love your sky blues) we still want Basil.

Thanks Robert. Basil hasn’t been too well over Christmas with an ear infection. He will hopefully return to join me when it’s a bit warmer 👍🏻

I carry the finished painting on the French easel. I leave it securely in place. You can also make a rack to slot boards into
