I like the direction they took Odin for this game. Based on all the stories/lore from the first game, I envisioned him as a mad tyrant who was too far gone to care about anything or anyone; a real monster of a villain. Instead, we got a believable sociopath who manipulates others into doing his bidding with a kindly facade; I didn’t think it would work as well as it has. He’s a great villain.
Santa Monica really did a great job making Odin The Big Bad of the Game look like a good and nice person

When it was revealed why the Midgardian refugees were right outside the wall to Asgard, that's when I knew Odin wasn't as big of a monster as everyone said he was. He was much worse.
He would have just been another zeus
if it wasn’t for Mimir telling us the stories, I would fall for Odin’s talk. he was super nice to, and gave freya everything she wanted to know her secrets
That's kind of the whole point... only the fabled Champion of the Jotnar... Loki... can give him the answers to his existential questions. Everything he did was to get answers for these existential questions by the higher powers.
Creating mortals, managing his "entrepreneurial" works, running the nine realms, harnessing more magic, Ragnarök.... were just inconveniences to him... not main priorities. Once he stopped it... he went back to what he has been obsessing over since his earlier days.
It indicates that these may be more higher cosmic entities that be that even the deities do not know off...
Like the Primordials? I’m sure Ymir could’ve had some answers but I guess Odin’s existential crisis wasn’t going on when he killed him.

Thor learned the art of standing so very still that not even the All-Father could detect him.
This one was drax's Long lost relative
edit: Yoooo Thx For The Likes Guysss
He learned that while he was with guardians
Bruh Thor was Fast AF 😳😳😳 too fast for a big guy
Thor trained with Drax during his stay with the Guardians.
He is so thin that he is almost invisible.
Excellent writing really. If anyone knows the mythos, Odin really had a drive to learn, this is just them recontextualising what that drive can do.
Yeah, in this game he’s reasoning for everything is ultimately the desire to know what happens next. It’s very subversive from the expectation of paranoid Zeus 2.0 in a good way
What i want to know is what odin, a guy thats lived for eons, created all there is, has near limitless power was so hell bent on learning that he was willing to risk not only his life but his sons, grandchildren, kingdom, everything, when he had been beaten and atreus asked him to stop, odin said he cant, not in a "i'm evil" kinda way but more like "its my life's work" which made me actually sympathize with him for a minute cuz atreus was looking for answers to earlier on in the game and we sympathized with him on the basis of him wanting answers that kratos couldn't give or didn't want to give him, so the difference btwn loki and odin is odin was willing to do whatever it took no matter how evil, which makes me wonder, was odin always messed up or did he become this way in his pirsuit for answers
Its a shame they couldn't make Odin look more like he does in the Mythology but I guess they might have had issues with the whole Gandalf thing
@@LordVulkan - and gandalf the grey, and gandalf the white, and monty python and the holy grail's black knight -
Yeah, I read the myths and sagas. The problem is obsession, it will drive you mad, even if you're a god, rather... specially if you're a god. Odin would never rest until he knew everything was either harmless or meaningless.
They made Odin a understandable Villain. He’s not bloodthirsty or filled with rage, revenge, or anything like that. He’s a knowledge seeker and unfortunately that is what causes him to do bad acts.
The drive for knowledge can lead even the best people to do very terrible things in that pursuit
He is the personification of what Atreus could become like Zeus was for Kratos. Atreus is just as knowledge hungry as Odin and they both strive to understand the world around them in order to figure out themselves and their purpose, but often run the risk of being arrogant and pushing everyone else into the fire just to get what they want.
I wouldn't say his thirst for knowledge but rather it was his fear. Odin always wants control of a situation and they way he gets control is through knowledge. But also because he got more knowledge he became more fearful and paranoid about unknowns which made him seek out more knowledge and paying any price for it. It's also why he has ravens everywhere keeping an eye on things so he'll never be caught off guard.
@@TheRestlessView yep, and imo it's like zeus when pandora box is opened by kratos in GOW 1. Kratos get power, zues consumed by fear.
So Odin's a little insane but really he's just literally what he says he is, an evil seeker of knowledge.
In the mythos, he goes to his uncle Mimir for the knowledge of everything and he has to sacrifice something to put in the well of knowledge, so he chooses his eye.
And in the game he went crazy after drinking from the well, but the well was just a waterspring that mimir laced with mushroom

yeah I think AC Valhalla followed that mythos more accurately no? I remember seeing a cutscene where he does it. While GOW takes a few liberties.

As an adult who has seen his fair share of narcissists in media and real life, Odin's manipulations were incredibly convincing to the innocent eye. I was plain terrified for Atreus, who didn't know any better, every time he was around Odin. I really thought Odin would deal the kid a nastier betrayal. No complaints at all for how things played out; that's just how well written Odin was.
I really like how Odin manipulated Atreus just by playing smart. "Don't kill anyone, don't go against your dad, just go investigate, which is also what you want to do." Man was one hell of a conman when not blinded by pride or arrogance.
I LOVE the blind passion and obsession Odin has for seeking any and all forms of magic, knowledge, artifact's, and well anything else. He sees everyone around him including himself as nothing but tools to forward the pursuit of knowledge and power. He's not sadistic he simply became too lost in his pursuit that he couldn't turn back, or even worse that he forgot how to.
Oh, crap. He's pretty much Bondrewd with extra step

Odin is believable and friendly when you can help him found out the truth
@@novathyes3633 the truth?
What's even crazier is that during this scene, if you've played the first game, you already know the truth: Odin lost his eye after eating some bad mushrooms. Mimir tells you that. Yet even with that in mind, you still fall for his lie, because he's that good at lying.
@@MrExDArte feels more like a retcon/mimir linked the eye loss to that event even though its not what cost him his eye. I mean, why else would he stop atreus from trying to look? If it worked, boom, answers, and if not, no risk to Atreus. After all you can BET Odin would have tried looking himself, and if it just didnt work and he was fine out of it, why not let atreus try?
@@thorveim1174 now that I've seen the ending, I gotta say you bring up a good point.
Maybe they're both true: the truth may harm you, but he's too ashamed to admit how he really list his eye, so he shifted the blame on the rift. Or maybe it's really just a retcon.
I saw his theory somewhere that Odin showed tyr the mask and only he could translate it since he’s been all over the world, but he refused, and this is why he was taken prisoner
Might still be the case he said that's why he tortured him when posing as tyr that could just be him telling the truth in a false way
They way odin gets jumpscare by thor💀
😆 man just shows up
Thor always prank odin :
1. Touch his drink with hands
2. Teleporting to his back
Who wouldn't be scared if a big guy like Thor can get behind you without making a sound
ohhh im sure Odin was just acting he does that the entire game
odin is so close to not being evil when he is excited about the rip, so close
Best thing about this scene is remembering Mimir's humiliating story from the first game about how Odin ACTUALLY lost his eye. It's so tempting to trust this weary old guy even when he's lying through his teeth trying to manipulate a little boy and make himself look like a badass in the process. Good on Atreus, playing along instead of calling him out. And dumb of the Allfather to make that bluff when he knows the kid has spent years around Mimir.
That said, even if Odin is lying about how he lost his eye, he is most likely telling the truth about just looking into the tear being dangerous since if it weren't, he would have already done it to find what he wanted.
@@dragonstormx He probably had a subject use it and saw what it did to him and knew from there how dangerous it was. And seeing as to how he already had a permanent injury he uses that perfect excuse to lie and make it seem like that’s what happened when he looked into the rift even though he never did
@@josephstalin2606 Sounds likely. With how cautious Odin is, he doesn't come off as the type to stare into some mystery rift on his own.
It's very much possible both might be true tho.
The rift might have blinded him while Odin sacrificed an already blind eye to Mimir.
Being too blinded by his thirst for knowledge to be cautious AND cheating Mimir with the sacrifice (unaware that Mimir himself is cheating) are very much both in character for him I'd say.
The idea that he's making that up completely would kinda take away from the rift's mystery so I personally prefer to assume we just got two sides of the same story but with missing information.
@@goji253 Possibly. We have seen before the Mimir doesn't have all the details.
Odin really is evil. He is a different kind of evil, more like a dictator or a politician, knows how to treat each individual person to get him to his side, with agression or kindness. Here you can see how he treats thor and how he treats atreus, also krstos. He treats kratos as a rival, an equal. Someone to fear, he treats thor as a tool a servant someone to do his dirty job. He treats atreus as a friend or a nephew, someone who he wants to show what he knows and learn new things.
In Odin eyes that’s how he looks at them And if you really look at it from his perspective it’s hard not to see why he feels the way he feels about Thor Loki and Kratos it’s not right that he treat Thor the way he does buh it’s not hard not to understand why

Odin and Atreus are kindred spirits in a way. And this is shown when Atreus, who sees that Odin is the first victim of his own obessions, did his best to keep trying to redeem Odin and when he failed... showed some kindness to a dying Odin. Odin even reciprocated by using the last of his strength to pass away in the comforting arms of his quasi-protégé.
He may have never trusted Atreus, but he held the boy in the highest esteem.
Sounds like Hitler
Or the joker
Odin isn't a stereotypical of a big bad grandeur dark lord, but rather more of a casino boss that has an insurance side business. He isn't written as an intrinsic evil entity (evil for the sake of being evil, thriving on others' misery), but rather a misguided man with obsession for knowledge to the point of being entirely numbed to others' feelings and suffering. The voice actor is legendary in giving him a salesman vibe instead of your average Sauron
The word you're looking for is theatrically evil. Odin is not, and never was, a good man. He's just very, very good at pretending to be
I love the missing eye explanation and also how Odin's like 'Well you COULD look but don't. Really don't. It's not a fun experience.'
It's also a lie, if you played the first game.
@@falconeshield *it's what he does.*
People say that Odin acts like a mob boss, but in some scenes he acts more like a boss in the office. Especially in the start, where him talking with his ravens, sounds like he is in the middle of an important call.
Love the contrast between Odin and Zeus, as in that while Zeus is "Bombastic" evil, Odin is more "Subtle" evil.
Subtle More Dangerous 😊
@@goldenstandard187 Zeus is stronger and more terrifying then Odin.
yeah, knowing everything we knew about Odin from the first game and seeing him act so nice and friendly is really unsettling. They did great job with Odin. You never know if he is gonna be nice, or when he is gonna put knife in your back, as you know he is constantly manipulating Atreus and Kratos.
@@YR-jg1gk Power isn't about force or ability to project lightning, its about control, while Zues is probably physically stronger than Odin, Odin is far wiser and knows more.
@@keithfilibeck2390 🧢. Ur extremely foolish to think Odin was anywhere near Zeus level
Actually, Odin reminds me so much of Zeus in this scene. Zeus and Odin are plagued by fear. For Zeus, it's fear of being killed by your own offsrping and losing everything they've created. For Odin, is fear of the future and losing everything to what you can't control. And they both see mortals as something lesser, as if they would be fine if no one every prayed to them or acknowledged them
I actually feel like Zeus would have felt a way about no one worshipping him- it was in Greece so there were humans worshipping him but in Asgard, there is migardians
What impresses me is that when we play as Atreus, we could never really see any real glimpse of the bad side we heard so much from Odin even though it can be clearly seen from Mimir, Freya, and Thor. He presented himself as a weak tired old man that just wanted peace and sought knowledge that we almost let our guard down.
We know he's the big bad but throughout the game he's shown himself to be this guy who just wants to do the right thing and maybe there's some truth in that. Maybe he really did have good intentions but the actions that led him to this path will never be justified.
The game almost seemed like he was supposed to be a dark version of Atreus, a powerful being that seeks answers about his fate and identity but the difference is that while Atreus gained allies, Odin used people for his own benefit and that's where he fell short to the point that his own son, Thor rebelled against him for abusing him so much
Yeah and the hype from first game is ruined
Ok, cool, so odin is not big bad villain, just fragile oldman
But we NEVER see his true intention. Whats inside portal? Wheres the sadistic behavior that mimir always tell to us? Has freya and mimir both lying? Hes clearly just an old man with not a lot of magic tricks. I think they should make the third part but they runs out of the materials too
they actually too invested making odin isnt a bad god that they themself forget to put that odin is actually a bad god
He was told as a person who removes every single possibility of chance of ragnarok to be happen. But in this game, hes only focused on his search for the mask
@@3takoyakis I understand what you mean, the games did a poor job of painting Odin as a villain. BUT his villainy lays in his past that he cannot escape, just like Kratos.
The difference is Kratos is trying to atone for his past, while Odin's selfishness cannot allow him to.
Odin has done heinous acts in the name of control, he killed Ymir to rule on high as All-Father, he corrupted the Valkyries and their sacred halls(Valhalla) to suit his own needs, he tricked Skadi into murdering her father when she rejected him, he conquered and subjugated the nine realms so he could control all angles of the doomsday prophecy "Ragnarok".
What makes Odin scary in the game when he's being nice, is what he will do when he is done pretending to be nice.
Odin may very well have been ATTEMPTING to be better (in his own twisted way I guess, we'll never know) after finding the mask and the "tear in reality" that would give him the ultimate answers, but his refusal to learn from his past as Kratos did sealed his fate and cemented him as a villain.
@@3takoyakis we do see his true intention: its finding answers to ease his paranoia about things beyond his control and what fate may bring. He does all this out of fear of the unknown.
And he DOES do a lot of atrocities. Just look how he treats thor, and what happens whenever someone, anyone, dares disobey him. All in all, he may have good intentionsdeep down, but the means he is willing to use are ATROCIOUS, with everyone on is path just a tool to be used, or discarded. Just look at the start of the game where he just callously call thor's sons "useless" IN FRONT OF THOR and says he doesnt care much for their death as a result but did with Balrd because he was still of use to him...
@@3takoyakis idk man, I don't really need a guy to be overtly sadistic in order to hate him with all my fucking guts; you see the way he treats Thor, the broken bonds he's left in his wake, the way he values the people around him? It's a far more insidious form of evil, one that you are liable to run into and suffer from in real life if you're unlucky. He's not evil because he wants people to suffer, he's evil because he doesn't give a single shit if people suffer for his goals.
"I'll do whatever it takes to find the truth no matter how many people I must lie to" - Odin
Pretty much Odin's thought process and why his sympathizers are idiots for offering such a selfish god any sympathy.
The scary part of Odin that's very quickly apparent is actually shown through his gifts and offers. He views everything as a deal, a trade, people can be bought with gifts and just as easily sold off when they are of lesser value than the next object required. The moment we talks about Thor's sons and Baldur, you have a clear understanding that he views those around him as investments rather than comrades.

In order to gain the sight ofwisdom and knowledge, Odin has to sacrifice one of his eyes on Mimir's Well. And then he perform a symbolic suicide using the Gungnir to stab himself to receive it.
Zeus, a Full Warrior Ruler Mode
Odin, a Magician Warrior Knowledge Seeker
Damn, Atreus really read Greek writings without seeing anything resembling them. Goes to show how strong his linguistic power is
But the Greek characters are very clear on the mask like at 4:24.
@@HuehuehueWolooo they meant that Atreus had never seen Greek writing before and he still was able to translate it to his tongue
He's not just the son of a giant, he's the son of a foreign god
I like how odin is like a buissness ofice type rich guy who goes to places alot
Beginning of the scene with Odin saying yes constantly, especially with his ‘do you not see me nodding’, feels like a phone call.
Thanos: ''you're not the only one cursed with knowledge''
so...Gideon Ofnir and Odin are like exchanging knowledge through the multiverse of gaming
these 2 fuckers are right up each other alley they sweet talk you to to the dirty work and if you are no longer usefull they let you fall like an unwanted toy
FIND THE ALBINAURIC WOMAN.
Huginn, the only creature in existence who can so openly and casualy shit talk the allfather. That crazy birb
I like how you can hear Thor walking before Odin calls for him
"And this stealthy side of beef" bro really roasted his son that hard☠️☠️💀💀💀
True evil doesn’t scream and shout and carry on. True evil is smarter than that.
True evil knows how to smile and speak softly while guiding you down a dark path without your actual knowledge
Odin really good at making himself out not to be the bad guy. Shower the person youre trying to flip with gifts and eventually they might join you
Odin sounds like a used car salesman with ties to the Mob.
Atreus casually taking the plans for Gjallarhorn.
Boy about to become an Iron Lord.
Only those chosen and blessed by the light would understand this one
One often meet his destiny on the path he takes to avoid it.
Juan?
Odin : Thor! get down here!
Thor : All father
Odin : Don't do that
😂😂
"I'm not the bad guy"
says every bad guy.
3:45 that mask is familiar. From The Mask (1994)
Yup it's the mask of Loki, in the myths I believe it allowed him to predict the future, he mostly uses it to make his pranks go well though
@@isaacpotter3454 meaning Odin could use it and knows the outcome of every wars and battles?.I think i understood Odin true intention
@@Daiman01 the mask also is a protection so he can look into the void, there is a highter entity there
I noticed there's a lot of comments on here about people thinking odin is manipulating atreus I really think that this is the closest to where we actually see Odin showing his true self this search for knowledge it's like a drug to him in everything else can burn away as long as he gets to know his answers he's an addict he's an addict to knowledge and he's really willing to sacrifice everything to get it.
I love how this Odin is basically a mob boss, and he runs Asgard like the main mogul of a tech company. Mortals were just the iPhone
I love how different Odin is compared to zeus. Both have the same reputation, but zeus is a strict tyrant who conquers by force while odin is a manipulator who lies and betrays all the time
Funny that Huginn would be arguing with Odin. The crow is literally Odin's mind, thought, memory, or reason.
I'm really about to get a PS5 for this game. The writing, voice acting, everything is perfect
only if you dont have ps4, cuz graphics on ps4 is the same as gow2018
@@just_Lee2 yeh but ps5 is better for this and 2018
4:08 iam so impressed with odins facial expressions, look at his mouth, insane work man
Didn't your mom ever teach you to never look at another man's mouth?
Then we find out in DLC, the tear is a rip in the 4th wall, and they break through it and find out they were designed for entertainment... by mortals.
Look at how Odin's expression changes at 3:51, he's surprised that Atreus can translate the language and seems pleased afterward that he finally has a clue.
the thumbnaill looks like aterus is ordering odin
The beginning of this video makes Odin sound like he’s on the phone.
You know I never thought Odin to be a bad guy really i know he is one but it’s in a way more understanding
"Atreus looks through with the mask"
Atreus: What is my purpose?
"You pass butter"
Still hilarious hearing Tobey Zeigler's voice for Odin.
the writing on the mask looked greek, guess thats why Atreus was able to read it, cause kratos taught him how
It's Latin...
It is greek. I am greek. Atreus voice actor NAILED the pronounciation. Οψιδιανή Σπίθα means Obsidian Spark... If you look closely on the right side of the mask there is japanese as well... IT IS NOT latin. I was shocked when Atreus spoke greek. In english dubs!!!!
@@dimzly2864 I’m wondering about what’s next for the GOW series. Since Kratos is now the god of Peace. That mask raises more questions than answers since it has mixed languages on it. What if there was an effort from different pantheons to seek that knowledge and failed in the process. What if that rift is actually a gateway to the Lovecraftian world, a world that contains the truth that breaks the 4th wall in a way?
@@LouizSlein That would be mindblowing.... Maybe Ragnarok was the beginning of something more epic than we would ever imagine
Kind of fitting that they made Odin lose his eye that way since in the old stories the price Odin paid to be allowed to drink from Mimir’s well (and acquire ultimate knowledge) was one of his eyes.
Just as a side note, in the old stories the reason Odin was so desperate to acquire said knowledge was to help him find his two brothers (Ville and Ve) who had gone missing. Odin had already searched all the realms from top to bottom but had been unable to find them anywhere so drinking from the well was his last, desperate hope of ever finding them again.
Ah, but that’s just it- he *didn’t* lose his eye that way. Mimir mentions in the first game that he clawed his eye out while high on drugs that Mimir laced a well with. Here, he lies to Atreus so casually, so believably and plausibly, that even players of the first game are left wonder for a moment: “Was Mimir lying, or Odin?”
Damn Dr. Glassman really changed
It’s the mask from the movie the mask . SOMEBODY STOP ME !
The mask from that movie was from Loki funny enough
@@MyWeedIsVeryGood and Odin was in it as well. That movie sucked though.
Would be hilarious if all the answers Odin sought came in the form of a faint whisper saying "42" 😂
W reference
All I can hear is Toby from The West Wing 🤣They even got the walk and talk lol
Looking at odin and his black physique while him and atreus travel in raven portal is terrifying you can just feel his snakey vibes and godly mischief and strength and you can somewhat see him staring into atreus soul lol
are you talking about right at the end? bc that was thor in the portal not odin
Ofcourse that part is thor duh. Talkin bout when he first use the portal with atreus after talking to heimdall. I dont gotta be exact on the timefrane it happened.
except he’s lying here. All part of his character. The real way he lost his eye was far more humiliating and revealed by Mimir in previous game
i like to imagine thor just gliding to odin at lightspeed
“Take this, and this stealthy side of beef” that is both hilarious and depressing since the guy is describing his son as almost an object while makin’ fun of him.😂😂
What vexes me is at 1:31 he says "You're welcome."
So the obvious fact is that he can hear what it's saying or at the very least is just identifying that it is thankful. When talking about how manipulative Odin is and how apparently malleable Atreus/Loki is I am less than certain he doesn't see right through Odin specifically because of this interaction. A part of me thinks he knew that the sword had been chained up by Odin for years and just didn't show it rather than the façade of being thankful for a cool sword.
Maybe I am reaching.
Nick Fury: “at least he didn’t lose his eye 👁️ from a cat 🐱.”
that beginning part sounds like odin having a phone call
Odin sounds less like a god and more like a businessman having a bad day.
