I honestly think Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was one of the best Broadway shows of all time. I’ve seen it 10 times in a row from beginning to the end with my mother. I loved the stunts, the costumes, the story, the musical numbers and the actors, particularly Patrick Page. I know many of you Spider-Man fans are badmouthing the show. But I really enjoyed it a lot.
I’ve lived spidey since I was little and I love theater...so I watched it....the music is pretty cool but I’m just so worried about the safety it’s crazy how they pulled it off
Saw it on the last day on the Broadway production. Very cold day in early January, standing outside, freezing in line. Well worth it, show blew me away.
A flawed production to be sure, but still with moments of greatness. Reeve Carney is an excellent Peter Parker embodying the physical prowess of Spider-Man with the incredible amount of stunt-work he had to perform but still having a great singing voice to make "Rise Above" the best song in the show. Patrick Page left absolutely none of the scenery unchewed as the Green Goblin and made for a great villain you love to hate as he indulges in the over-the-top campy nature of the comic book villain. I wish the designs of the Sinister Six were a bit less cartoony and more threatening, and that we could have had Mysterio instead of the newly invented "Swiss Miss". I appreciate the comic book aesthetic of the set design with no straight edges to be found, and some of the songs are quite good (with my other stand-outs being "If The World Should End" and "A Freak Like Me Needs Company"). The inflatable Bone-Saw McGraw wrestler was really cheesy, and Arachne's part in Spider-Man's story feels a bit forced as he already has the motivation to be a superhero from the events that lead to Uncle Ben's death. It's such a shame of the production woes and that no one in the end could come up with a successful final vision leading to its ultimate financial failure. It's a spectacle to be sure, but my hope is that it finds its audience someday.
I would give absolutely anything to see this show in person. I’ve always loved the music and now, finally watching it, I’m super emotional because, to me, this show is a masterpiece. The acrobatics, unlike which I’ve seen in any other show, a really unique score that actually fits the character and comic theme, just the ingenious ways they chose to do everything... ugh I love it. Please no mean comments, I can’t help what I like. 🤷🏼♀️
Bug Lady, I saw this on Broadway and went back a month later and saw it AGAIN. I adored it. Music by Bono for god’s sake, what’s not to like? I play the soundtrack all the time. Loved the acrobatics too, and the way they made a comic book musical that was far more than just “Spider Man on ice”, if you get what I mean. *links fan pinkies with you*
I liked the show. It isn't perfect, course no production is. But this makes me hope one day someone will find time to make a reboot of this and try again. Hopefully.
assassinman0066 This has a lot of flaws, but this is the closest I could get to liking Spider Man, I would like someone to improve this if they ever decide to make a movie on it.
I’m not sure if they would tbh. It cost so much to make and it would be a risky move to give it a revival but if there was I’d see it. Also the theatre in the video is only one that could even run the show. (Only one big enough to run unless they change it so they don’t have to fly around in the auditorium)
I remember seeing this play as a kid, too younger to realize some of the crappy music, and bad writing. But man was the technical stuff really cool for a stage production Edit: the green goblin is also by far one of the best aspects
Costume Designer: makes complex costumes for everyone Reeve(Peter Parker): Where's my costume??? Costume Designer: scruffs his hair and hands him fake glasses Also Costume Designer: Just get a blue shirt and then away u go
TV Carpio, aka: Arachne is the actress who played Prudence in Across the Universe. And Reeve Carney, aka: Peter Parker is in Penny Dreadful on Netflix (as Dorian Grey, which I think was A+ casting) and he is in Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' music video. I think it kinda sucks that such talented singers/actors had to be in such a mediocre musical. I love it, but in the way people love Rocky Horror. It's gimmicky and endearing, so we love it.
My personal opinion on why this show is so odd to many is because of the totally different versions of spectacle. There’s the cartoony and fun costumes, especially with the Green Goblin and a certain amount of the villains. Also, the music on that side of the spectrum; it’s goofy. Spider-Man’s side of this show is a lot more black and white, but in a good way. Beautiful music, and simplicity. I won’t dive into the fight scenes, because we all know why that went wrong. It’s just such a strange combo. Just an opinion
The whole Greek goddess take on the story arch is interesting and artfully executed, but it doesn’t fit with Spider-Man. It mess with the pace of the show.
I'll say this much, I love this musical. Maybe because it's a huge part of my childhood, maybe not. But even in the most cringy parts, the music still makes me want to watch more.
Since there will not be a DVD release of this performance and being that this was recorded on the fly this account is the best so far. So true believers enjoy it for what it is .. Everyone else you think you do better? Go for it !
I saw both. One of the infamous previews and the final product. There were things done on stage that were mind blowing and pure genius....pure Julie Taymor. Visually and strikingly STUNNING. Made me gasp. But..the Taymor version....more than one occasion made me go “huh”? The final version, I was actually a bit bored. Not taking ANYTHING away from the actors and everyone involved. It was without question a monumental undertaking and everyone should get kudos for mounting something so new and jaw dropping. It in my opinion didn’t have an emotional center. But visually....nothing like it.
I like the guitar number before the final battle with goblin and the finale song, seeing peter swing through the air without his mask on and posing heroically gave me chills when I first saw this.
honestly? kinda love this show. it certainly is a bit of a trainwreck, but that just adds to the character of it. the music is fun and energetic, the cast portrays their roles very well.
The Spider is played by Juno from the Descent. Spiderman and the Goblin are both in Hadestown. Mary Jane debuted in Spring Awakening and was also in Next to Normal.
I agree it had moments I saw it the night Natalie Mendoza returned after having had a concussion. The actor who fell and almost died was working that night and right before he leapt off he did turn and wave at one of the little kids in front of me which I got a thrill as well. I had wished that they would trim and cut things. after I saw it they did indeed trim and cut the things that I did not care for and unfortunately it wasn’t enough to save the show. However for those that got to see it live it was indeed an experience. The only scene that had My jaw on the floor was the spiderwomen with high heels on all of their legs dancing. oy vey Maria!!!
I felt like I was obligated to watch this as a fan of Spider-Man and theatre. ...and Well It was ok. I feel like this would only be enjoyable for Spidey fans. The acting was good, the set design was great, the dialogue... Jesus Christ. The songs were meh, I only kinda liked Bouncing Off The Wall. I liked the fact that more than one person played Spider-Man during the 'swinging' sections, I thought that added a lot to it. I just wish they had a better writer for the songs and script. You can do so much with Spider-Man, it just pains me that they didn't. They could have used different villains from the comics. This was just heavily based on Spider-Man 1 and 2 which is annoying because they have 100s of comic books to work from. I hope another adaptation of Spider-Man comes out in theatres better than this. With the budget they had for this they could have done so much more. It's almost like they just took a popular character, quickly wrote a few songs and slapped it on Broadway for the money (which is probably what they did). I'm disappointed. Still... That set design was great and the team that designed the set should be applauded.
If they ripped out the Greek mythos stuff and had somebody else write the book (script) and maybe had like Tom Kitt write the music, and took out some of the more dangerous stunts, the show wouldn’t have been the hot mess that it is today.
Good concept... though if that were to work, we'd need a brief moment before or after the wrestling match where Peter sees said carjacker running by and doesn't stop him. Like in the comics, this would give the scene where Peter confronts his uncle's killer more weight when he realizes it was the same carjacker he didn't stop beforehand.
This was the first Broadway show I saw and it was on a school trip I was on and I loved it. Looking back on it now it isn’t the best but the stunts were cool
When I saw this show, I really liked it. The music isn't the best (except Rise Above is great) but it had spectacular visions and I just love Spiderman
appreciate the upload, I never usually watch stage shows, but am a spiderman fan... thoughts: - people would probably enjoy shows more if there were subtitles projected somewhere so all the dialog could be understood including lyrics. - The white stringy stuff they used for webs was surprisingly effective visually. - I was just thinking how electric guitar seems to always fit spiderman thematically because subconsciously the guitar strings are like webs. - Near the end it seemed a bit confusing where I think Goblin was webbed to the piano, there are civilians on the stage, but Goblin slides away from the civilians over the building which makes it seem like he's being dragged upward, but the -splat- implies he hit the ground. I'm not sure why this was considered an artistic failure since as I mentioned I don't know watch stage shows to compare them against.
The final product of it self really wasn't terrible or anything, its just they had spent so much money and time into getting it to work at all and the show wasn't good enough to have made all the money back. Renovations to the theatre to do all the webslinging/flying and all the lawsuits put them damn near a hundred million in debt. Also got delayed multiple times over 5 years so among all of that mess it got a ton of bad press. Then they legit had all the wrong people working on it for too long after the original producer died. The show itself and the plot of it is honestly whatever but it's the fact it takes away what makes Spiderman cool, which is the fact he's relatable and realistic in a sense. It felt too much that no one really cared about the actual character but more that they were just trying to cash out on all the Spiderman hype from the movies. It's a decent show, its just not all that great of a Spiderman show.
I’ve only see this on RUclips and there are a LOT of issues, but I wish I had seen it in person. That said, I don’t know who the choreographer was, but if they bring this back, they need to get a new one. The choreography in this show is atrocious. It’s really messy. No one is together. There a LOT of movement to the point where it looks unintended. It looks like a high school production based on just that factor alone. Or like they’re warming up for dance practice. It’s awful.
My issues with the show: 1• WAY too many villains: should've just been Goblin and maybe one other minor villain. 2• Made up characters: Arachne, Swiss Miss. 3• Uncle Ben never spoke the iconic line "with great power comes great responsibility" 4•They should never have done comic-style costumes (my opinion) 5•Why the hell did they never even MENTION Spider-sense?
@@biancaflo I went to that moment and didn't hear it. What uncle Ben said was that Knowledge isn't the same was wisdom. Peter says with thg great power comes great responsibility at the end of Rise Above
Does anyone get annoyed when the person filming has a random freak out with their hands? I'm grateful for the recording but I can't help but get anxious by it.

I'm not gonna lie, I actually found this play to be pretty enjoyable.
*musical
Consideri this 1:09:57 is in it, I don't blame you.
Erik Hackney ikr
But I think we need more of a father and son relationship with uncle Ben and Peter
I’ll believe it, lol. Also, mad respect for your Haru Glory icon!
Patrick Page's "NOOOOOOOOOOO" at 1:05:16 is downright haunting.
I wish I saw this too. I would've loved to see Spider-Man swinging over my head. If I hated this, I would've accepted your opinion anyway.
*links fan pinkies with you*
I saw it on Broadway and it was my first ever show. I loved it so much.
Me too, I really wish I could’ve seen this version of the musical, I absolutely love it
I liked the show.
Except Hamilton 😉
I agree. This looks like it had potential.
@@awesomeadventuresstudio3999 speak not of that!
For a show that was on broadway I feel like this is something you could find at Universal Studios in the 90's.
I wish there was an official recording of this show to be able to see it. Right now I am just playing it in the background as I work.
open.spotify.com/track/24xLuekrvQGGhZjCdzbU0R?si=_cI8lA_lRayAmW2I456ynQ here's one song from the original cast recording

I remember seeing this play as a kid, too younger to realize some of the crappy music, and bad writing. But man was the technical stuff really cool for a stage production
Edit: the green goblin is also by far one of the best aspects
Costume Designer: makes complex costumes for everyone
Reeve(Peter Parker): Where's my costume???
Costume Designer: scruffs his hair and hands him fake glasses
Also Costume Designer: Just get a blue shirt and then away u go
TV Carpio, aka: Arachne is the actress who played Prudence in Across the Universe.
*me two years after you posted* "HE WAS IN PENNY DREADFUL!??"
It's because the producers and creatives had conflicting images of what they wanted from the show.
i just love reeve carney ok
37:21 is such an eerie transition, one of the most creative and jarring depictions of Uncle Ben's death
Kind of wish it got a proper dvd release
Dang Patrick page out there rocking “a freak like me” and can also sing the hell out of “why we build the wall” in Hadestown.
Even though some of the story telling is a bit bad, the scenery is amazing
The whole Greek goddess take on the story arch is interesting and artfully executed, but it doesn’t fit with Spider-Man. It mess with the pace of the show.
Me the first seconds with aracne: You can skip the story I alredy know it. I like history.
This is the only time I hear Spider-Man/Peter Parker sing. And I love it. I wish I could see Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.
I'll say this much, I love this musical. Maybe because it's a huge part of my childhood, maybe not. But even in the most cringy parts, the music still makes me want to watch more.
Same it also took part as my intro to brodway
I like what I see (and I can't see much when the cameraman keeps turning away). I wish I could've seen it.
I wish this show would come back
This needs a revival with the same name, but completely different story.
Since there will not be a DVD release of this performance and being that this was recorded on the fly this account is the best so far. So true believers enjoy it for what it is .. Everyone else you think you do better? Go for it !
There’s a more HQ recording but with the later cast.
Thank you so much for uploading this! This show brings back so many nostalgic memories.
Same
When? From when you were a spider?
Dominic Crimmings Orrrrr from when I saw the show back in 2011
you are doing the lords work, my dude!!! i’ve been craving the non-bono version of some of these songs for awhile and glad i found this! thank you!
The beginning sounds like mean girls on broadway and I was like “wait..”
lol hax I’m guessing you were waiting to here Damian say “Good Morning welcome to high school!”
2:09:02
2:03:10
honestly? kinda love this show. it certainly is a bit of a trainwreck, but that just adds to the character of it. the music is fun and energetic, the cast portrays their roles very well.
Okay, but can we just talk about how trippy these pink walls were?
The musical should be call "Spiderman: Turn off the egos" . Beginning with Julie Taymor among others in that show.
Spider-Man: Turn on the (Greek) Mythos.
I’m laughing at Peter Parker shaking when he meets Dr.Osborn, but when I met Reeve Carney I could feel my body shaking.
I would die to see this show one more time
This is actually pretty impressive!
The Spider is played by Juno from the Descent. Spiderman and the Goblin are both in Hadestown. Mary Jane debuted in Spring Awakening and was also in Next to Normal.
1:36:39 most angelic vocals I’ve ever heard 😭😭
Saw this show 2x. Once in previews with the guitar players on stage left and then 1st row for the reg run. Reeve 5 octave voice, crazy good.
Honestly, given this show’s reputation, I get nervous every time I see Arachne’s suicide scene in the beginning of the show.
I felt like I was obligated to watch this as a fan of Spider-Man and theatre.
...and
Well
It was ok.
Still... That set design was great and the team that designed the set should be applauded.
you say this but they had NINE years of preproduction
If they ripped out the Greek mythos stuff and had somebody else write the book (script) and maybe had like Tom Kitt write the music, and took out some of the more dangerous stunts, the show wouldn’t have been the hot mess that it is today.
I love Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark. my favorite show 😎👍✌💖💗
Gen Racer88 that’s interesting…
After Uncle Ben got shot I would’ve included a number called Vengence in where Peter chases the carjacker, afterwards Rise Above plays.
@@ryanschwartz4959 I was thinking Peter would’ve ran off when he heard the radio status on the carjacker.
Who else is watching this because hades town, just me? Ok
what
Sam Kelman a lot of original Spider-Man cast members are in hadestown.
@@walshvideos6784 oh
Honey Francesca me I love Patrick page and Reeve
Patrick Page is a god
Well, set looks really interesting
This was the first Broadway show I saw and it was on a school trip I was on and I loved it. Looking back on it now it isn’t the best but the stunts were cool
The final few seconds of this are hilarious, I've never seen Spider-Man have to wiggle a wedgie loose before lol
Peter mentioned "The Fantastic Four" so is there a Universe with the Marvel Spotlights plays? Marvel Musical Universe?! *MMU!?!?!?!?*
When I saw this show, I really liked it. The music isn't the best (except Rise Above is great) but it had spectacular visions and I just love Spiderman
Lmao peter sounds like Jermey from BMC
The Bonesaw inflatable lmaoooooo
"IMMA ROUGH YOU UP LIKE A BROADWAY MUSICAL!"
- Deadpool, MVC3
ngl this show goofy as HELL
With great power comes great responsibility
Every song I listen to I think to myself, "did this really have to be a musical or could it be a play but with music and no singing?"
I saw this live when I was 11 and wow it is way easier to take seriously when you're in the theater and a child
Why the heck did they cut off the end of this on the cast recording?????? I want my high notes!
appreciate the upload, I never usually watch stage shows, but am a spiderman fan... thoughts:
- people would probably enjoy shows more if there were subtitles projected somewhere so all the dialog could be understood including lyrics.
Someone got injured and the show got sued into oblivion.
The goblin looks more like the Grinch
Coincidentally Patrick Paige who plays the green goblin has also played the grinch 😂
UNDERRATED! UNDERRATED! UNDERRATED!
but tbh justin matthew sargent was a better peter ngl
INDEED INDEED INDEED
Very underrated
Agreed
@@catherinehorowitz3930 No, tbh Matthew James Thomas was the best
also my favorite is when the Goblin does the phone call that is very funny😆😆😆😆😆😆
It’s awful.
This version of Hadestown is weirder than I remember
Thank you for sharing this emotional masterpiece.
My issues with the show:
1• WAY too many villains: should've just been Goblin and maybe one other minor villain.
2• Made up characters: Arachne, Swiss Miss.
3• Uncle Ben never spoke the iconic line "with great power comes great responsibility"
4•They should never have done comic-style costumes (my opinion)
5•Why the hell did they never even MENTION Spider-sense?
what uncle ben says is at 39:30
@@biancaflo I went to that moment and didn't hear it. What uncle Ben said was that Knowledge isn't the same was wisdom. Peter says with thg great power comes great responsibility at the end of Rise Above
Cameron Trud ooops! Sorry my bad :)
@@biancaflo No worries....I'm just very particular on how good ol' Spidey is portrayed
Cameron Trud totally get it. I love this show. Just wish I could find a better bootleg :/
The funniest part of this show: Cletus Kasady apparently has a doctorate
I know 🤣
Does anyone get annoyed when the person filming has a random freak out with their hands? I'm grateful for the recording but I can't help but get anxious by it.
Tbh this is the best “what in the hell am I seeing” experience I have ever had. I would have ate this shit up as a kid.
I saw this back in 2011-2012 sometime around there and I was 5-6. Trust me dude this was the shit when I was a kid. Some of the songs are still stuck in my head.
1:34:56 this is where the actor of Spider-Man's harness comes off and falls into the pit.
Peter: YoUr A rOcKsTaR!!!!
Norman: You hear that Emily I'm a rockstar~
Emily: I thought you were God
I just noticed for The Lizard costume, during “A Freak Like Me” his human head mask isn’t covered but during “Spider-Man!” the head is covered up by his lab coat.
