- Lesley Stahl and "60 Minutes" cameras get the first look at the rehearsal and production of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," the most ambitious and expensive musical ever brought to a Broadway stage.
Saw the opening preview performance. It was amazing theater and I'm glad I took my 8 year old son to see it with me. The set designs were incredible, the flying sequences were dazzling and the songs were awesome. By the official opening night, all the different components will gel.
“But I have a team” lol that didn’t age so well for Julie.
This is so exciting! Inspiring! I NEED to see this.
Watching this old vid, it's fascinating to see how far this show has come and how much has changed since its inception.
I hope someone makes a documentary about Turn off the Dark someday. It would probably make a better one of those than a live musical...
"We'll only do it with Julie Taymor."
"Eh? Julie what? Who's that? LET'S GOOOO"
I've auditioned for this musical many-a-times.
Really? What happened? Xd
The pizza of pan sent me here
I might be criticized for saying this, it probably would have done quite well as a concept album and Bono and the Edge would have taken it on the road and performed the entire thing from start to finish instead of taking it to broadway. When I was watching this back in 2010, I knew right from the beginning, it was going to be a big mess.
A fellow artist reminded me that criticism is easy and costs nothing. Creating is much more dangerous and can cost everything. Julie Taymor's courage and vision are to be commended. Whether the show is a smash or a flop, Taymor's singular vision will be rewarded in what seems to be a charismatic, contemporary rendering of this modern-day myth. I'll be in the audience January 15. Can't wait
I really want this succeed, not just because I enjoy musical theatre and Spider-man, but also because so much effort was put into this piece and so must artistic creativity. I really hope it does well.
I saw this on broadway and it was amazing, there were no mechanical or vocal issues, nor any injuries. the spider girl they refer to in this video is Arachne. @antman1001000 the Green Goblin in this is like the Joker in The Dark Knight, you just love them for their evil personality.
this is going to be amazing!!
Funny to watch this in 2022.
2:08 this means somewhere out there’s a bullying by numbers demo from U2 that hasn’t been released and I need it
This looks awesome. Julie Taymor is a friggin' genius-there is NO way we're not gonna see this...no matter the cost, travel.
7:16 Ah yes, "fabulous masks" of a living kitchen utensil, a bee man, a guy that never wears masks, and a creepy looking scientist that gets killed by an inflatable reptile.
The stars of this show are the actors and actresses doing the ground-breaking flying scenes bringing a new element of depth to plays. Groundbreaking and going to be awesome. Love seeing U2 embrace and encourage this as well. Julie Tamor (sp?) is awesome too.
Julie Taymor is a creative genius. I'm anxious to see how this turns out no matter if it's good or bad. I so want it to be amazing, though
despite what critics say, and despite the delays and push backs, you can't deny that there are still tons of people who like it and want to see it and that it's making bank.
this show's gonna be kick-ass!!!!
The visuals look great and I love the music. I'm rooting for them
I would pay double the price of the soundtrack CD for all songs to be sung by Bono and the Edge
And they would have no problem charging you double the price.
show is great! music was waaay better than I expected!
Wanted to get tickets but they had moved the previews back a week. It looks spectacular but the ticket prices are jaw droppingly expensive.
I cannot wait to see this on Broadway!
"I don't think anything really creative can't be done without danger or risk".
Reading all of the neg reviews for this video, it's astonishing to realize how many people can't fathom that phrase.
Instead, those neg people all take the easy road of easy criticism without being compassionate about all the hard work, massive effort, huge money, and a shit load of doubt that has been put into it...
Does anyone know where I can find the “bullying by numbers” demo?
Looks amazing! All it needs now is an ape break dancing to the Falco's Rock Me Amadeus but with the chorus changed to Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius.
Can't wait to see it!!! I loved Marvel Comics as a kid--about a century ago.
@JesusofSuburbia203 no,no,no. You misunderstand. This is a new Spider Woman named Arachne, based off of the Greek myth about spiders. Look it up. She weaves spider-mans costume when Uncle Ben dies, but when he decides he doesn't want to be spider-man anymore, she goes crazy and tries to kill Mary Jane.
im a loyal U2 fan and love spider man forget all you guys who say this is gonna fail it may not be the best musical ever made but it will be the most extraordinary most definately
I woul d love to see this!
@SelasNight In the late 60's an Audio Drama and an Audio Musical album titled "Spider-Man Rock Reflections of a Superhero" was created (and you can still buy it) so I always thought the FX and money for such was the only thing that was ever holding such a flexibly dramatic story from being on stage.
I like her philosophy about raking risks and fear. It inspires me.
One of the things they never thought of is that this could NEVER go on tour, but it looks cool all the same!
Spiderman and Music my 2 favorite things! I really want this to be amazing
YESSSSS, AT LAST :D
Omf, so excited for this. Bono and Taymor are genius. Also, you go TV Carpio.
I can't help but love all the people who rant on and on about how bad this will be. It only makes me more thankful for this show.
Love Julie Taymor. Its a shame she was never able to see her vision fully realized.
i've been a spidey fan ever since i was a little girl before the movies came out. im SUPER excited for this production but im not too sure about the songs....i am sure once all the kinks are fixed it will be amazing! im very worried about these actors who are almost sacrificing their lives to entertain the audience in these aerial stunts. also, i am SO proud of Reeve!! i worked for Carney a while ago and am VERY pleased that Reeve is Peter Parker! way to go, mate! u surely will not disappoint!!
When I first heard about this musical, I was like WTF. Now I think it actually looks pretty good. My school is going to New York in the spring. Maybe we'll get to see this.
When I first heard there was going to be a Spider-Man musical I was like "Bad Idea" but after seeing this, I have no doubt that its going to look great, maybe it will even sound great. I wish i could go to New York to see for myself if the plot and acting and story are great.
It looks SO exciting, but I'm afraid that spectacle might not be enough.
But I'm willing to give it a chance when it officially opens in January.
i never thought there would be a musical o.O the idea sounds impossible... but who knows maybe it will turn out alright.
There's something really disturbing about how much money has gone into this thing and how many people are being seriously injured. The awesome thing about creativity and imagination are that they are free. You decide how much your creation will cost. You have to take responsibility for that and I'm not sure they are. I'm sure the experience of the show will be amazing. But at what cost? Is such a gluttonous(and seemingly cursed) production really worth it?
@1musicalmad There was a store outside the theater. You could buy the shirt, a mouse pad and other things.
Superb production, Julie Taymor should be given all she requires to bring this dream to reality.
@Starry2000 I totally agree. Looks really good. I know I'm going to see it.
This is the funniest thing on youtube right now.
I hope Bullying By Numbers is on the EP!!!!
The song "Bulling by Number" sounds epic.
I agree... wish I could be in NYC to see it. I'm wondering if they might - like the Metropolitan Opera - look at doing digital simulcast shows at movie theaters around the country. A way they could possibly recoup their investment...
what's the name of the song in 05:27 - 06:16?
I am so lucky! Went yesterday to Spiderman! It is SO AMAZING!
those cameras are called Skycam and are made in my home town Broken Arrow Oklahoma
@captaintaco2345 where did u get it??
"no one wants to see the $25million dollar spiderman." So true.
What is the name of the girl singing with Bono at 5:42?
@da2byu
Thanks for posting this. I've been very curious about this show. I love what I've seen of the set but I feel kind of dubious about the music. I don't expect to see this though so any feedback from others who do is good. Thanks again.
When I heard about this, I honestly thought it would bomb. I could not see this working at all. After seeing this, I know for a fact that this show will be the "Avatar" of theatre! IT WILL BE AMAZING (Just like Spidey)!!!!!
@itzikPinhassi87
"No More" , it's on the concept album.
@MrReuben13 She's not Mary Jane she was helping out with the songs when they where getting composed. She plays Arachne.
@StarKillerLucas Damn, why didn't they go through with it? I hope they bring it back. I just looked it up and it was gonna be called Dark Knight of The Soul. I can only imagine a duet with Bruce and Selina! Damn that would be so awesome! I really hope they bring it back! DC is gonna have to if they want to catch Marvel now! This is too epic!!
Wow interesting. I would like to see this. It's cool to see a woman behind the scenes creating awesome costumes, thus far. Heck the production team seems to being a good job.
@independantwoman That's because a year ago when the footage was shot Jen Damiano wasn't in the cast.
Nice to see Julie Taymore again.
@Officefreak22 Yes...TV Carpio is in this production too...for however long it sticks around at this rate. :)
Interesting!!
@AdamGrowells Thank you!
is the girl singing with Bono during the music rehearsal the girl who played Prudence in Across the Universe???
is the song from 5.21 actually in the play? it sounds decent
Yes
Does anyone know wich episode this is?
I hope it works out, I'd really love to see it on Broadway, but I hope they can do something about the safety factor here, one stuntman suffering broken wrists and another just took a 30ft fall when his rope broke yesterday :(
Im betting you have to be a true Comic Book nerd to understand it fully.
cant wait to see Mat Devine in this next month!
@kennyalancramer Don't worry, there's a silver lining for you. I saw the revival of How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and it was absolutely AMAZING!!! I was at first skeptical about it because I wasn't sure if Daniel Radcliffe would be able to pull the singing and dancing off but I was very pleasantly suprised by his performance. He can actually DANCE! :D I saw this show as well. It's not spectacular but it's not horrible either.
btw
@GoochShow I haven't watched that since I saw it in theatres. And I have no intention of watching that again. I can't wait to hear the soundtrack to this though.
If you look at this more like a Cirque Du Soleil show based on Spider-Man, and not a page-by-page adaptation of the comics, you'll be happier.
They're after the SPIRIT of the character, not fanservice.
i'm seeing it this wednesday(: so so so excited.
I know its 10 years later but, how was it?
Going to be great! Too much talent not too...
Hang in there, all!

Because it goes where no stage musical has ever gone before, placing the performers (and the audience) in danger with superb, cutting-edge, dangerous effects; that's why it's creating a new category: "Comic book, rock opera, circus" -- when was the last time you saw something similar on Broadway, you silly dilly-wad??? If it flies, it'll be a pioneer on the boards....
if i had money, i'd go see it!
I want to see it sooo badddddd!!!!!!!!!!
from what i heard, its 5 years...just to break even
I'm spidey spidey, and i'm mighty mighty. And i'm here to fighty for whats righty righty!
@innocentdevil777 From what I can remember the music and lyrics were gonna be done by the guy who did Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell albums. The plot would have involved both The Joker and Catwoman. It would have taken some things from the Tim Burton films. One intersting change was that in Catwoman's origin story, she would have witnessed Batman's parents' murder. From what i heard from demos it would have been pretty cool
the dancing at 4:06 looked awsome.
I've been extremely skeptical, if not, I was making fun of the whole idea when I first heard about this musical. But I have to be honest, it sounds and also looks very promising and I'm really excited and curious about it now.
i hope this show closes before the curtain even opens!!!
I'm on board Bono!
I hope this show finally has some good luck. It's almost as if it's haunted.
Favorite line....."I love it when people say what a horrible, lousy, idea, I think that's great..............I hate the comfort zone."......Julie
Im giving it ONE chance...dont make me regret it marvel...
@da2byu
That's what previews are for, to find room for improvement and fix problems. But because of this show's twist filled production history and the names attached, people are watching Spidey with big expectations or like a hawk (or Goblin) ready to strike. The fact that many geeks don't like musicals and most musical buffs arn't into comics & superheroes certainly doesn't help his case
@da2byu
Act II of Lion King lost me a bit too, actually. Kinda' too late for that one, but let's hope they really bring it home w/ the writing for this one:P:D
I like the look of the show. Its different and It looks very entertaining.
besides, Most shows look better live than on videos. So if you see it live, you probs wouldnt see the wires because of how fast they are moving over your heads. Its a Shame it will probs never come to UK :(
Wow... Julie Taymor shot to the top of my list. Crap... I've got a reason to go to New York!
I like the idea of this, it looks cool, but I think there's no way they will recoop the costs for making this show in ticket sales.
I saw Antoine Silverman and Matt Beck in the orchestra!
@Fengdesigns In defense of this thing ( and I ain't much of a defender cause I think it will suck) I think it looks ok as far as the set. The set panels actually move around on cables plus there are video panels. Not so sure about the character redesigns and music though and from what I read the plot is awful. Spider-Man's origin is on of the best in comics and there are so many great early stories. Was it that hard to script this??? I don't get it.
