The maternal instinct is there for everyone else, but the thought of having my own kids makes me tired and sad just thinking about it. Our lives are ever changing things. Do whatever is best for you. Just to despute your point of "not making those memories beating zelda". Im 26. And some of my fondest childhood memories are of me and my parents sitting at night (like 8pm or so) playing zelda ocarina of time on the nintendo 64. Its not as much about the game (even though its the greatest game ever made) but the bonding experience of doing so. The experience of being alone with my parents after my baby sis was put to bed, and them actually caring about my interests.
Fun fact, we actually sorta recreated this a couple of years ago, and completed the game once again as a family. Which was a lot of fun, with all of us being adults.

I have a one 1 year old son and I think about his inevitable teenage years a lot. I always thought it was weird to find showing affection to your parents as a teen "embarrassing". But whenever my son lifts his arms for me to pick him up or comes and lies on top of me and just falls asleep I always get a little sad cause I know he wont be nearly as affectionate when hes in his teens. But hearing someone in that age range saying they still do stuff like that warms my heart and gives me hope maybe he still will when he's that age.

Like I seriously can’t sleep at night if I don’t have them playing in the background. I don’t even watch the video I just play it and flip to the side and I fall asleep so peacefully. They honestly have saved me and I’m so incredibly happy I started watching GMM.

I'm an only child and my parents were both a little older when I was born (my dad was 35 and my mom was almost 31, so not super old just like older than most of my friends parents [you have babies young in the south]). I never got "The Talk" from either of them, though my mom did buy me that American Girl book about puberty so that was something. It was also weird cause as a little kid I was def treated as an "oldest kid" but as I got older they began to treat me more as a "youngest kid" which i think may be due to the fact that I'm an only child and they realized i wasn't about to die at the drop of a ha.
My dad still tries to get me to believe stupid stuff and I just have to turn to my mom and be like "is he telling the truth?"

Seanathon I relate to this so much. I’m an only child and my parents expect me to be mature, but they treat me like a baby (I still love them though). My parents were 40 and 45 when I was born, which all my other friends parents are pretty much 20 years younger then them.

Link, the answer to your question “Does it go the other way?” Yes. We lost a son in 2018. He was stillborn in a freak accident with his umbilical cord. We have since had a rainbow baby. A daughter, and I feel like I need to be more deeply involved. Even while I was pregnant. It was and is totally different than my first son.

Boy do I understand that mother and turning up the volume to drown out her kid. There are only so many times you can ask your child to be quiet, especially when you aren't busy, before you feel like you are going to hurt their feelings. It's a creative way to pause a conversation to give your mind a few minutes of mental peace. Then you can listen for another hour or two. 😆

Maybe it was just own my parents' fragile dynamic growing up (to put it gently), but I find you both to be incredibly generous husbands and fathers. This might sound too frank, but really, most women have kids and very few of them have partners who are capable of being supportive AND earn as much as you both do. From what little I know about you two, it seems to me that your wives are the lucky ones :) Yet you view yourselves as being selfish for focusing on GMM (aka making money, to put it bluntly) while they do the majority of the parenting. This is my own opinion but if a guy were willing to be the sole money maker of the household, I'd take joy in focusing on being a mom. This is why I enjoy listening to you two speak. Every episode is entertaining but you always say something new to make me respect you guys even more.

🤣 my birds and the bees "talk" was much the same as Links which is sad considering mum is a nurse! She had this book that was always on the bookshelf growing up so as we would look for books to read growing up, I found it...when i was pretty young actually..probably 7 or 8...and it had pretty graphic sketches inside of what the bodies looked like and how things fit where...so as a kid, we would hide the fact we knew of it from our siblings and from mum...but whenever we had friends over...we would grab a book from tge bookshelf and hide in the bedroom and start giggling over the pictures together! Being kids, we didnt know the specifics of it, just the general mechanics I guess, which was all spoken about a bit at school anyway...so by the time I'm about 12 or 13 and mum comes to me with the book and says "have a read" and walks away, asking a week later "did you read it"? I kinda just had to say we had been reading it since we were 8...! But it was soul destroying at tge same time...i had a brother but my dad was never around much, I'm very introverted, so that was the last talk I ever wanted to have with anyone, let alone her...lol I just couldn't do it! lol
If i ever got to have kids of my own, id have to be like Rhett though, abd make them comfortable about it somehow...but I cant see that ever becoming a thing sadly.

The one about the "guinea pig of three children", I can relate to. But I'm not the oldest, I'm the second youngest. My little brother is about 5 years younger than me, my sister is 2 years older than me, and my older brother is 5 years older than me. My older brother is currently pretending to has this thing that makes it so he can't walk, but I've caught him waking without his cane allllllll the time when he doesn't think anyone's there. He also told his teachers that my parents were abusing him just because they took away his phone. He also punches me and hits me soooooooooooooo much. There were 3 times where I actually got welts from him hitting me. My sister thinks that the solution to everything is to hurt me. She wants my spot at the table, just push me off. My little brother loves to spit at me. My parents hate me, and I'm not overreacting. But the point is, my siblings can get away with all that, but I can't even get away with a C+ on my report card.

the oldest child the parents being strict on, ive seen that a lot, but have you ever seen the opposite? i think this might happen when they didnt do well enough with the first child or second, and the are strict on the third, they need at least one right and its the last chance.

My parents had my older brother and me. Only two kids. They weren’t that strict with him. Maybe a little since it was their first kid. But comparing it to me, they were soooo much more strict on me. And they didn’t do anything wrong with my brother. Their parenting was fine. But the reason they were so strict on me is because I’m a girl and because I was their last child. They didn’t wanna let me grow up because they knew they weren’t going to have anymore kids and my dad just didn’t want me to do things like get a boyfriend and possibly get pregnant. I don’t necessarily agree with that parenting though as I feel like I was set back in life a lot

Not to mention, this is mainly my dads doings which is also opposite to the norm. My mom really wasn’t strict at all but my dad was the one who always worried about me growing up and all that

Oh there are absolutely plenty of families that are more strict with following children than they are with the first one, that have nothing to do with tragedy. It's obviously not the common route but it's not like "woah that's unheard of".

36:03 I'm sure my dad didn't see our value decrease as he had more kids but if we were in a social situation and he thought someone thought we were a danger to ourselves (climbing trees, etc) he would always look at the other adult and just go, "there's more where he/she came from." Lol

Rhett is kin of wrong about the zelda thing. Even though I have memories of doing fun things with my parents, my dad also played video games and me and my brother used to watch him. Some of my fondest memories are of him beating wolfenstein.

I’m the youngest of two siblings and my mother is way more strict with me than she is with my brother so it’s the opposite for me. My mother has always been closer to my brother for some reason so favouritism is definitely a factor. But I also think my mother is stricter with me because I am a female which I don’t think is right either. It is what it is I guess🤷🏿‍♀️
