Why WORST Full Frame Camera Still BETTER Than Fuji XH2

  • Don't get me wrong, there are many crop sensor cameras that outperform full frame. A lot of people prefer the look of Fujifilm cameras to the Canon, Sony and Nikon full frame. But there is definitely a full frame look, and even the worst full frame camera ever made, the Canon EOS R, one of my favourites actually, still has a nicer look than Fuji's latest X-H2 with their best lens the 16mm f1.4.

Everyone who got a Fuji camera, Especially Fuji Xh2, The FIRST THING you guys should do after turning on camera is to go to settings and change FOCUS PRIORITY for AFC = SHUTTER PRIORITY. Fuji defaults the camera to Release Priority for AFC which is not working as it was intended to be and causing out of focus face and eye pics even though the camera shows green ball ( false feedback) on the screen. This is a bug that Fuji needs to fix.

Don't think it is a bug. Fuji has left it default to release priority for prior models. The difference between release or priority was minimal. But... the increased 40MP, slower read out and underpowered CPU made it more noticeable. Setting to focus priority is only a workaround.

Maybe I should wait and get the X-S20 which as you say will probably be on-par with their flagship cameras! Interesting that the Panasonic pony of hope now brings PDAF to it's cameras. But unless you can turn in the X-T4 and get 100% money back, its worthless endeavour it also begs the question what you are trying to do with these cameras, honestly anyone doing this for a hobby should stop and ask themselves "how much is too much?" Because unless its your job, I would tell you just to keep the X-T4 cause its a small compact camera and quite good as photography even if the body leaves a lot to be desired, the likes of S5 II are pretty heavy and lenses are pretty chunky too apart from the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 an astonishing lens.

7:55 - The AX700 doesn't have BOSS just so you know. Sony forgot how to make the BOSS system. Their most expensive and "latest" camera with BOSS is the consumer level AX-53 camcorder from the year 2016. I owned it; wouldn't let you go full manual as Sony purposefully crippled it, although there were workarounds. I don't count the recently released and downgraded AX-43, which is technically the last camera made with BOSS. Even most of the Sony users in your comments section know nothing about BOSS because all they know is mirrorless. Also, the AX700 is like 28mm on "wide" end. It's an "okay" camcorder. I owned the Panasonic HC-X2000 (a tiny sensor camcorder) that came out in 2020. It was actually pretty good for what it was. 25mm at wide end (better than most camcorders although 20mm would be better), had a great 10-bit 4:2:0 image in 4K60 (it's the smallest 10 bit camcorder) and had a built in ND filter array. f/1.8 at wide end helped it reach further in lower light (for the sensor size) over the typical f/2.8 on the 1 inch sensor camcorders like the AX700. Screen was sharp and bright. I used the Cine-D profile. For being such a small sensor (GoPro territory), the image quality was quite nice. Here's a video I made at the zoo with it: ruclips.net/video/0RxWFH8QoR8/видео.html. My exposure and color grading back then were garbage compared to now but enjoy. The camera actually had a menu item called "Operation Time" which tracked your hours using it. I used it for about 120 hours over the course of a year. Only reason I sold it? The menu system / ergonomics weren't as good as Lumix. Switching from say 4K30 to 4K60 was slower than it should be (you had to go into the menu), I did set up a custom file for it and assigned to a button. Also, no shutter angle so set shutter speed manually. But overall was a great camcorder. I actually really would love the recently released HC-X2 camcorder from Panasonic, it has full V-LOG on a 1 inch sensor and Richard Wong was impressed by it. Again, only up to 4K60 (4K120 would be nice) but it's just a little too big for my liking. Anyways, don't buy the AX700. It has the same garbage video codecs from the a6000 era. 4K30 maximum at 100mbps H.264 (exact same as in ZV-1) so enjoy macro blocking artifacts in the trees, plus I know you'd immediately reject it anyway due to the laughable wide end focal length equivalent of like 28mm or whatever. I haven't checked the specs in years (it came out in 2018) but that wide end is a joke :)

Their smaller bodies are still bigger than Sony APSC which is sad. The advantage of crop sensor is superior reach, especially for wildlife, but their telephotos are no good.

The recommended list by Fuji is complete BS. The only thing that matters is whether the lens has sufficient MTF. The Fuji 16 1.4 MTF is decent enough, in fact better than a lot of the lenses on the "recommended" list. However, Casey is wrong that the 16 is better than the Viltrox 13, the Viltrox is in fact sharper.
On 40 megapixels, even the 150-600 can't resolve it properly and it's sharper than vast majority of those lenses. It hits diffraction very early as Dustin Abbott showed in his tests. The pixel density is too high for APSC lenses but Fuji had to release something to make it look like they're progressing. In reality it's a step backwards because you're not gaining enough from 40 megapixels as you're losing.

The problem with Fuji autofocus is Kaizan. What is Kaizan? Small incremental change. And that is what the X-H2(S) represents with respect to autofocus. Small incremental change--very small. The problem is that other camera companies are improving autofocus at a far faster pace. Even Panasonic is now venturing into phase detect autofocus.
What Fujifilm requires is Kaikaku--radical change. And the only way they are going to get radical change is by first recognizing that they are falling further and further behind in autofocus technology. With the X-H2(S) I believe they have the hardware to make radical improvements. But does FujiFilm have the will? What FujiFilm requires is new staff working on autofocus that can bring fresh ideas on how to best implement autofocus.

Agreed. The DFD autofocus on the GH6 is not as good as the X-H2(S). However, Panasonic is recognizing that DFD on the GH6 is never going to compete with Sony. On Panasonic's new S5II they have both phase and contrast detect. This is radical change for Panasonic and very likely to be in a successor to the GH6. What did FujiFilm really do differently with autofocus on the X-H2(S)? They did nothing but a very small incremental improvement. FujiFilm needs to make radical change to their autofocus. Otherwise, they will eventually see themselves squeezed out of the higher performance mirrorless video market.

Fuji raw files are proprietary af and make people look like they have worms in their skin, and the lenses are too expensive for what they are. Panasonic is good, that full frame mount they're using will ultimately be the one with the most lenses available for it, and they're not as liberal with the cripple hammer as some other brands. Sure they make everybody's skin look like green poo, but menus are excellent. In all seriousess, I have Panasonic micro four thirds and Canon full frame cameras, and the Panasonic is so much nicer to use I'm thinking of just going completely over to the dark side. I never buy the top of the range, and the second and third from the top Panasonic tend to be a lot more fully featured than the second and third from the top Canon. Plus I'd be able to make video from the mft and full frames look similar more easily, and be able to use the same flash system on all Panasonics, whereas now if I want TTL I need seperate proprietary flashes for each brand. Ultimately its only a matter of time because I have an RF mount camera now but I can't imagine starting a collection of RF mount lenses, its the most proprietary mount in the history of cameras, Mitsubishi won't even let Mitsubishi make lenses for it, they've actually taken legal action against companies who have tried to help solve their customers' problems by providing the necessary lenses, so obviously, its not going to work out with RF mount, the blood is in the water, and Panasonic is going to feed on the carcass, Mitsubishi will feast on its own tail just to make me cycle my old gear into the used market and replace it with all new "Panasonic" gear instead. I'm pretty sure that's the trajectory things are on now though, I'm pretty much decided that when the Canon gets replaced it will be with a Panasonic, there's no way I'm buying RF mount lenses.
