I will say the content is great, but they didn't have to do Nolan like that lol. An 8000 lb. Badlands winch will move that truck for sure. They're $200 with a lifetime warranty at Harbor Freight plus you can still come out $1000 on top.

Comealong does have some minor yet noteable advantages. For starters it is able to be mounted to any chassis point to pull from any direction, where the winch is fixed to the one spot. Also it can work without power, in the rare event that a dead car needs to be dragged from a hole.

Already beat me to it. Even the most non-offroading youtube nerd would know this just by watching Matt's offroad recovery. They use the come-along with recovery ropes in various circumstances. And before you look at the banana or morvair and go "ThEY DonT hAvE A WiNCh" They do but it's stored in the back as to not take up rear bumper space for the hitch.
Anyways anyone who is interested in offroading and stuff check them out. The recoveries are anywhere from funny, to curious to outright sketchy. It's also a family owned business with the kids and grandfather involved so it's actually quite innocent and wholesome. Pretty comfy youtubing if I must say.

I used an old come along winch my father picked up in the 80's to recover myself from a blizzard while driving a forest service road out of the Rockies a few years back. They're doing this for no fucking reason now. He could have gone to a junkyard see if he can salvage one, or bought a low budget version. They're not even doing compare test anymore. If I want this fuckery I'll go to the speed channel. There are so many ways to make this more interesting. You could have given them fabricators and all the cheap parts and still have their ass over there with all the expensive parts. That would be a great comparison! And you can also make an educational thing so people can see you can do it with cheap parts you just got to put more labor in. But now find the crap parts and put them up against the dope shit that you know you can get from your friends in the industry.... Come on... Donut is better than that....

I've been using a come-along for years. I take my Jeep wheeling quite often and I have a strict budget, I just get things that I need to make wheeling better and nothing more. Thing is, build your ride right and know it's limits, be smart, and you won't get stuck often. 9 times out of 10, throwing a few sticks or a log under it will do the trick. If it doesn't, the come along has gotten me out of everything so far. It's just as dangerous as a winch too, just be smart and safe about it though and you should be fine, and make sure it isn't rusted or shoddy before using it. Again, many years I've used a come along, nothing wrong with it imo.

I can move a come-along from my Silverado to my Xterra (actually I just keep one in each). A come-along isn't added weight to my front bumper and doesn't need to be hardwired to my battery. I can connect the come-along to the front, rear, or anywhere needed (a winch mounted to a hitch plate can do this and makes the most sense for winch placement) No remote to break on the come-along. I've used the come-along several times and find no need for a winch, but I will say, if you're doing multiple recoveries on a big trip, they're much more efficient. Problem is the winch "looks" cooler on a truck and screams to everyone that you're an off-roader. The come-along hiding in my tool box doesn't give me that needed street cred when driving to work.

I’ve repeatedly used a come along to self recover when I was 18/19. A couple chains and the come along works just fine. Especially if you are financially challenged/young/or just starting out. It’s affordable and useful. Not only to recover but I’ve also done a little body repair with it as well.
If your going to be doing things where you might get stuck routinely, you should be building accordingly and have a winch. Not bare minimum for your vehicle either always go a level or two higher. Makes things easier in the equipment and lowers the risk of not working/breaking.

B - Lots of moving parts and mounts could fail being fixed to the vehicle and all (this is bad for extraordinarily long term longevity, also if one mount fails you have SEVERAL other options with the come along)
C - Cannot be used in other places that your vehicle is not or cannot be. (Bad for if you need a winch but your vehicle is dead/cannot fit to the location)

But if it's a winch vs a come-along, it's an immediete difference, so you can make a show about that. Instead of having 2 winch, maybe 200usd vs 1200usd, and then they have identical performance for like 10 recoveries. Nolan at the end also acknowledge that, so he said he'll just buy a cheap winch.

I had one that I kept with my truck, but I'd also take it out to do work in the yard, hoist my motorcycle from a ceiling mount I put together so I could work on it, as well as a variety of uses while camping. Sure, you could use the truck winch for some of that, but then your truck is stuck there being the winch whereas the come-along can be anchored to a rock, tree, etc. The price difference on this one was pretty severe, and maybe it would have been a better test to go with a super cheap winch instead of a come-along just because they're so different. A come-along is just another tool that happens to be able to fill in double duty as a truck winch.

While living in our van and taking it off road although it's a 2wd we have found the come along more versatile. We have been in situations where we had to winch ourselves out of going in reverse. For instance on a beach. Our come along winch pulled us out no problem, but if we'd had a winch up front we wouldn't be able to go back.

A front mounted winch is great for front pulls, but a hand winch is ten times more useful in hard situations/sticks. Plus, the hand winch is easier to maintain and doesn't require batteries/running engines.
Yes, you can also have a portable winch to stick in a receiver hitch on the front or rear, but you can also use the hand winch for a side or off angle pull.
The come-a-long is an OK tool, but there are way better options on the market, like the "more power puller" and others.

A come along can come in handy. I'd take the winch everyday of the week, 6 days Sunday.
For a lot of folks, being stuck will involve mud. If any mud gets in that come along, it's jammed up and needs to be cleaned before it'll work. The winch will work. That said, I had my Jeep Cherokee stuck in a mud hole and I tried everything to pull it out. A 4 ton come along, 1 ton chain hoist, tow ropes, ect. That jeep was stuck so bad that come along wouldn't budge. Even with help from the chain hoist, wouldn't budge. My buddy came out with his truck and used his 12k lb winch, pulled my jeep right out using a snatch block within 20 mins of getting there. Save the come alongs for small stuff like a sxs or smaller equipment and to move objects on a flat bed, stuff like that. Later, I got a Dakota and added a Zeak 10k lb winch on it I found on Amazon for $250 at the time. Got two snatch blocks, plenty of shackles, safety flags or whatever they are called to place on the winch line, two 30K lb tow straps, and one 15 ft 6500 lb working load tow chain. Put about $600 into everything and that includes the winch mount for the truck. Two and a half years later, I still find uses for that winch and it's never failed to pull my truck out of any predicament. Cheap winches work, but have to be careful as they over heat faster than higher quality winches. I only run mine while under a load for about 10 secs at a time and let it rest for 10-20 seconds. Keeping it covered and run the winch for 1-2 mins with no load once a month or so to keep the moisture out and the gears free and it'll last a long time.

Wise users have both. Wyeth-Scott make magnificent manual pullers worth what they cost. Tirfor are even more awesome and of course not cheap but both are lifetime tools. Also worth carrying are some (quality, like Crosby) wire rope clamps so you can if desired cut "leaders" (separate sections) from your winch cable for various uses and to make something useful out of cut-off sections where mid-cable damage was removed. I use them for preloading trees and pulling other items where I may not be immediately able to disconnect a winch or comealong cable. Wire rope is cheap so I fear not to lop off some as needed (for example to re-wire a manual puller).

Whether you need to pull a come along, break a lug, or maybe you could be injured and weakened, either way that added leverage could make the difference that gets you out of that situation. Only issue is what would it be? I have only seen him in the Hi-Low Series so I don't know what his interests are or what types of Cars he likes to Wrench On. Obviously he's a jack of all trades but yeah it would be nice to see a series just him.
