Deleted scene from Paul Thomas Anderson's film, Magnolia, in which Frank TJ Mackey (Tom Cruise) gives a seminar to a group of men on how to score women.
@@jimclawley9117 The interview scene made my heart stop!!! She asked "What are you doing?" Without blinking he replied "Judging you". Tom's intensity in this scene - Epic.
This actually happened with Tom in his real life. Tom tells a story about speaking with PTA his personal story of losing his father. It's pretty intense.
Easily my favorite performance from Cruise. He showed so much range and nuance with this role and he was completely believable. It's performances like this that prove to me that he still has the potential to be a great actor.
@@randywhite3947 Late reply on my part, but fair point: in hindsight, I should've worded that better than I did. I guess what I mean is that he often goes for a certain type of role, the more physically demanding roles if you will (which, save for a few, don't seem to require the same level of acting chops as roles like Frank T.J. Mackey, Vincent, Ron Kovic, and such), and based on that, it can be easy to forget that he can take on roles like this, really dig deep, and wow viewers with the kind of acting chops he does have. Honestly, I'm just hoping for the day where he starts consistently taking on roles that stretch his acting chops more and more.
I thought that something was missing when we watched this movie last night, and he talked about staging a "tragedy." This scene is great! They should not have deleted it.
@@cowicial5674 Rachel McAdams and Mark Wahlberg have also been nominated... Nobody in his right mind can say they are great actors. Oscars is very often a popularity contest.
Randy White Sure. It really was a room full of people in 1998/99 who believed that Tom Cruise wasn’t acting when they said ‘action’ and ‘cut’, but instead hosted hotel conference room seminars on male hook up techniques.
Tom Cruise earned his 3rd Oscar nomination for this movie (he lost to Michael Caine that year), however, it was quite a surprise for most people, almost everyone predicted that he'd win - he won the Golden Globe for the same category that year. I wish he'd have more roles like this in the future - he may have some issues but as far as acting goes, he's definitely a great actor.
I love that he answers the phone just simply by saying his last name Mackie lol I don't have a last name that rolls off the tongue as good as that and it wouldn't work if I said it.
I just watched the movie and absolutely loved it. Now I watched this deleted scene and busted out laughing! I can see why it was cut, but I think this scene was brilliant!
@@bookeblade Personally I think they were a little too light-hearted and comedic for the way PTA built tension around Tom Cruise's character in Magnolia. He was not supposed to make us laugh by doing funny sketches, because then he'll be much more likeable character (as a rule, we like characters that make us laugh, even if they are assholes) than he should have been, especially at this (introductory) part of the film. Also, generally speaking it would be too much of a tone shift in my opinion. That said, I love those scenes. Made me think, I wouldn't mind a good comedy with Tom Cruise. I think he can totally nail it.
I think probably it's better to leave this scene out. The movie is long enough as it is and this really would of messed up the movie's pacing. In the other scenes you get a good enough idea that his character is a sleaze that wants to manipulate women to get them into bed. This scene just reinforces it, but is just telling us what we already knew.
dcc1980 It is not as clear cut as that son. If he is a sleaze bag, why did he nurse his mother when she was dying of cancer? The film is about the knock on effect of cruelty.
I think the reason this was cut is because the scene gives the impression that his program is at least mildly successful while with the scene removed there's no reason to believe he's anything other than a misogynistic fraud that hasn't had the success with women he claims to have had and manipulates the insecurities of other men more often than the insecurities of woman as he so often brags about during his lectures .
As funny as this scene may be, I feel like it broke Mackey's mystique for the audience a little too quickly. We all knew he was full of shit, but still, we had to see how he presented himself to the people. And y'know what, it worked, first minute I thought he was an ass, second minute I was loving every second of his deranged philosophy.
I just watched this movie for the first time on dvd last night and was f*cking astounded at Tom Cruise's performance. He was frigging hysterical! There's a great outttake of when he's on the couch with the girl taking about Pookie the cat- the funniest thing I've ever seen Tom do. He is bad ass in this film.
My cat name is Pookie and he’s a diabetic. I just found out that it’s the same thing in this deleted scene. Hilarious. But my cat didn’t die and I never hang out with Janet
I normally don’t care for Tom Cruise as an actor, but I did like the film Magnolia and thought he and William H. Macy should have won Oscar’s for their performances.
I actually knew a guy who did the same thing. I mean the sad sobbing story. He would tell a story about how his sister had fought a disease and how brave she would have been doing so. And he'd be crying about it and end up in the girl's arms. That was in about 2004, Magnolia is from 1999. Maybe he got inspired ;-).
His apartment looks exactly like I imagined it to be. A fluorescent fish tank, a pinball machine, a big ass stereo system and a black leather couch. Love it.
Indeed, an excellent scene. Following Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" and Paul Thomas Anderson's "Magnolia" Tom Cruise's professional carrier went into a downward spiral. Yet, Spielberg's "Minority Report" and Mann's "Collateral" are one of the few exceptions.
Or the fact that it's already a 3 hour film and scenes, regardless of how much they are loved, must be cut. I'm sure PTA hated cutting this out, but it was out of necessity I am sure.
I agree. I've always liked Cruise's movies but his acting chops really showed in this movie. The death bed scene is heart breaking.
The interview scene is a standout, when she asks about his mom and his face just drops. Brilliant.
@@jimclawley9117 The interview scene made my heart stop!!! She asked "What are you doing?" Without blinking he replied "Judging you". Tom's intensity in this scene - Epic.
Gotta admit the death bed scene made me weep. TJ Mackey wanted to hate his dad in his final moments, but profound sorrow overtook him.
Hit home big with him. Those were real tears in that scene

I did that to girls when I was like 14..lol
Cruise fixing the date whilst maniacally playing the arcade is the single best sequence in the history of cinema.
I thought that something was missing when we watched this movie last night, and he talked about staging a "tragedy." This scene is great! They should not have deleted it.
Me too. I felt the scene cut in an awkward point. Amderson should have cut some if Donnie's scenes instead esp the bar scenes.
The way he immerses himself in this role is amazing. More amazing than he did for Lestat.
This reminds me of the D.E.N.N.I.S. System Lol
It doesn't apply to Gail the Snail (girl in the video)!
