That's interesting. Kurosawa did something similarly with one of his films. He wrote a film without realizing it was the same story as King Lear, and oddly enough he was very much in love with Shakespeare's plays (having recreated Macbeth in the most admirable Throne of Blood). It's very interesting to note how directors are not exposed to the canonical body of literature and accidentally make up their plots just like the classics. Yes, even the Bible.
Or how when the Coen brothers started writing O Brother, Where Art Thou? and realized it had many connections to The Odyssey, so they just ran with it and made the whole movie a retelling
That is part of the Collective Unconscious, coined by Carl Jung. It refers to archetypes which are considered universal and which Joseph Campbell elaborated upon his works in the Monomyth. It is fascinating indeed.
THAT EXPLAINS IT, OMFG, first time i saw magnolia, in the opening seen, about sydney barringers death, right before he jumps off the building theres some hose or cables to his right leaning against the ledge folding over each other and forming a blatant 82, and i've always wondered if that was intentional or not
Wow. Just watched it for the first time today and I saw the 82 in that scene immediately but had no idea what the significance of it was until I saw this. PTA is brilliant.
I feel like PTA is being extremely ironic here. Exodus 8:2 reads “If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs on your whole country.” Directly tying into Magnolia’s themes of the past’s reconciliation with us today. While the quote from the Bible is literally referring to letting the hebrews go from Egypt, when taken on its own, the quote can serve the desired meaning. PTA also has a history of this. When asked why he wanted to make TWBB, he said something to the effect of “I wanted to make a movie that was outside.”
Well it makes more sense this way, really, since in the bible the frogs never rain down from the sky, they appear from the water and cover the land. The Fort connection is much more direct.
I would not have caught the other references, if not for the (almost) Obnoxious 8 & 2 made of wire on the rooftop and lingered upon, almost endlessly, before the Son jumps.
Not really related, but I keep seeing the #237. The hotel room in the Shining 🌟. It keeps showing up. Now that I type this, I'm in Starbucks, and looking out in the parking lot, and the license plate on a jeep is, TzRf 237.. My motel room was 237. God will someone stop this please!?
The movie sets up 3 instances in which tragic coincidences occur. “This cannot be one of those things” is set up from the beginning. It was deliberate and intentional and he’s lying to preserve the mystique that it was indeed “just one of those things”. Brilliant man either way.
When a person says "Can I be honest", that generally indicates they are not telling the truth. He knew, don't know why he denied it. If nothing else, am I supposed to believe he never watched "The Ten Commandments" Nah, no sale.
“I need a two”
“All you need is a douce”
“That’s an eight!”
Tragic that yarn ..
Something about his short pause after he says "that" makes that line for me.

They also mention proverbs 47:2.
“The kids have an even 2000, and the adults are way up with 47”
Ah I get it he’s doing the coincidence thing again
"HONESTLY?.. HONESTLY?!" lmao

That’s how you know he’s one of the greatest. He doesn’t care if people call him a genius or something like that. He loves to make fun of interviewers

This is going to be famous one day.
Damn seeing this video was uploaded 17 years ago (almost 18) makes me feel ancient 😒

I feel like I’m watching a COC or other similar breakdown video. He’s doing the whole interviewee thing

You know he’s joking here lmao
It’s too much “coincidence”. Honestly, I don’t believe him lol

But why would he lie about it? What's the reason for fabricating the Henry Gibson anecdote?
