He's certainly influenced by Kubrick and Altman, among others, although those two stand out the most to me... but he's hardly a plagiarist, that's just silly. And banal? If his films don't speak to you, well then I suppose it's a matter of taste, but there's few films I find as emotionally and intellectually engaging as Boogie Nights, Magnolia and There Will be Blood.
@@calebsmith462 I agree with sound, but I think their visual styles are very different. PTA’s cinematography is much more subjective than Kubrick’s; PTA will often start scenes with extremely tight shots to evoke from the audience the same uneasiness that the character is feeling, and may only have two or three of a scene’s 30+ characters in focus. Kubrick pretty much never does this. He’ll show the massive crowds that surrounds the character, and use the character’s interaction with it as a tool for character development and context. This is mainly because PTA’s films, even when dark, are much more personal and human than Kubrick’s. I love them both though
PTA is so cool, in the most unaffected unpretentious way. I really like his take on filmmaking. I don't get some of the comments here at all man. Paul is probably more articulate hopped up than I am when I'm sober.
In regards to acting skill yes, he showed so much emotion but you could say the same for Born on the Fourth of July. That was an outstanding performance. Collateral is good because it’s like the only film were Tom Cruise is the villain.
@KajiCarson You're right; I saw him give a Q&A a few years ago and he was extremely shy. He said something like, "I can't believe I'm fucking here," or "get me out of here." (I forget the exact words.)
"That really only supports my position that he is an utterly banal director who plagiarizes the works of truly great filmmakers" If he's a plagiarist then pretty much every filmmaker other than the first ones would qualify as plagiarists
It'll be interesting to see what kind of movie The Master will be. If it's a movie about religious cults, you just know that PTA will be asked repeatedly about Tom Cruise and Scientology during its promotion. All I can think is that it's going to be a non-judgmental view of cults.
dude, I like PTA's movies but I cant let tha jab about the simpsons movie pass. I agree transformers and the other movies made just to sell toys are shit but the simpsons are art. Matt Groening hasnt shortchanged story for the sake of selling a few action figures.
@ButchClancyDubstep That really only supports my position that he is an utterly banal director who plagiarizes the works of truly great filmmakers. However, if you couldn't detect a more than subtle Kubrickesque style in There Will Be Blood then I'm afraid this conversation is pointless.
He made Boogie Nights and Magnolia in his 20s? That's insane.
puts us all to shame really
It’s never too late to chase your dreams dude people blossom at different times
Cocaine
I think he made the original version when he was actually 17... that’s flipping nuts..
And Hard 8
One of the greatest directors of our generation.
of any generation
In my opinion...the best writer/director of his age and generation.
Tarintino is a little better
@@Hhhhhrro Seeing how my comment starts with "in my opinion"...no.
@@mykylc something I appreciate about replying to a response on your decade old comment
@@Hhhhhrro I love Tarantino, but that's debatable. They are two of the best filmmakers of their generation.

i see demme in his early films
The master is damn good
Honestly I don’t see Kubrick in PTA more than in any other great director
@@stupididiot6993 I mostly see Kubrick in the way he frames images, uses sound, etc - it's mostly audio/visual.

Tom Cruise has to work with Paul Thomas Anderson again.

your dream is coming true !
@@FmrFox-no6yk Bs, how?
He just seems like a cool dude.
Pta and Tom Cruise wrote that caracter based in Ross Jeffries according to Neil Strauss.
Magnolia is possibly Tom Cruise's best performance ... aside of course from Tropic Thunder 😉😉😉!!
Eyes Wide Shut and Collateral though
A few good men’s too. But Magnolia’s performance is ridiculous.

Agreed. Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia.
he got the best out of Cruise
PTA is underrated!!!

"pretentious" is what people who don't understand film call him. And what they'll probably call me after reading this comment.
I've never heard anyone call PTA pretentious... I don't think a pretentious director would make "Boogie Nights"...
I think it's his best, personally.

Even the first film-makers plagiarised, they just stole from other mediums (theatre, painting, etc.)
He's a fan of Stanley Kubrick? I wouldn't have guessed that from EVERY FUCKING MOVIE HE'S MADE...
@MrKurtLongjohn Or the audience.
Normally he's more articulate, I think he was on something during this interview.
what a genius
just nervous i think
Neil D Tyson was a film guy before physics became an interest?
