Acting boils down to 1 thing: Fear What Mr Hanks is describing is just that; fear of what you can or can't do, what people think of you, etc. Overcoming fear and simply doing is true method acting. You must become the character to properly portray the character or it comes off as you playing a character. It's subtlety but therein is the challenge.
Just hearing Hanks's voice is encouraging. U talked about how we don't have to really change our voice. I constantly think I have a monotone voice and that it sucks. The fact that Hanks keeps his voice the same is inspiring that I don't have to change it, rather make sure it is conveying what the character is feeling at the moment.
Art reaches its peak when devoid of self consciousness, freedom discovers the individual when he loses concerns about the impression he’s making or about to make- Bruce Lee
I struggle with getting beyond self consiousness so much, which makes me just like Tom said, aware of the people around me and takes my focus away of my character, which makes is less emotional/real. Annoying really, i’m not sure how to get passed that yet.
Well you have to challenge your psyche first, then you’ll have to act more so insane; it may sound crazy because it is, but you’ll eventually thin the lines of reality and acting into one. • Have full blown conversations with yourself and sometimes engage in arguments with yourself. • Talk to your reflection at times, “What are you looking at?”. • Talk to pets or inanimate objects. It’s lengthy and complicated but it gears you into the idea of doing what “isn’t real”, that is comparable to what acting is, which is basically people doing scripted performances that aren’t real.
People act everyday whether it’s at the job, with friends, family, etc perhaps it’s an oversimplification but anyone can be actor. (Btw I never said everyone can be a good one lol)
Really good advice! And we got a glimpse into how Hanks makes career choices, or how he chooses what to work on. I'd say the begging actor is just out looking for experience, but at some point an actor has to really think about how a project fits into their career. But you know, that's kind of true of any career... it's also true that with acting and even other proformance careers, the bigger the pay check the smaller the cage, so there is a real reason to be picky sometimes... if you're afforded the luxury of choice. Anyways, good compilation!
