  • @junkice6930
    @junkice6930 Год назад +50

    One of the things that I feel like doesn't get mentioned enough about Lenovo is that you can buy the vast majority of the parts in their laptops from them.
    With the serial number of the laptop, their warranty site will give you a list of parts that are installed in the laptop, as well as any other parts they carry that are compatible with it. I'm serious when I mean that you can get almost everything. Motherboards, screens, keyboards, batteries, and so on. I have a legion 5i from 2020 that came with a 60wh battery, and realized that if I swapped out it's secondary hard drive for another m.2, I could also buy a 90wh battery kit. The kit came with the battery as well as all the extra hardware and instructions needed to install it.
    As far as big name brands go, I'd have to put Lenovo at the top when it comes to the repairability.

    I would’ve thought that there’s extra cooling for the CPU considering how heat-dense they are, but the extra cooling to the GPU probably makes a higher impact on performance. At least Lenovo is finally putting more fingerprint sensors in their Legion lineups

    • @Ishpreetb264
      @Ishpreetb264 Год назад +3

      2021 and 2022 legion 7 laptops did include a fingerprint sensor. It seems that this year's legion pro 7 is an upgrade to the gen 7 legion 5 pro and legion 9 is the true successor to the previous legion 7 laptops.

    • @RyneLanders
      @RyneLanders Год назад +4

      TBH, most laptops with Nvidia GPUs don’t seem to have heat issues this gen. Mine stays under 82 degrees under load. The CPU however gets much hotter and I have to adjust the PL settings to manage the maximum wattage to prevent thermal throttling on that component. And with games these days being harder on CPUs than even GPUs and CPUs bottlenecking top GPUs, I think extra cooling on the CPU would have made a bigger difference.

    I manage computer purchases for our CAD team at work. We have two of the legion 7i laptops that function amazing for 3D modeling using point cloud data. The RTX cards are much cheaper than the Quadro cards. So a $4,000 laptop isn't that big of a deal when you consider that we used to spend 5 or 6k on desktops that did the same thing.

I also want to know more about this AI chip thing. How does that actually work and how does it translate to performance?
    Still, for $4k+ you can build a pretty killer gaming desktop that would outperform this, so the mobility I suppose is what you are paying for. It's a beautiful machine to be sure, but jesus, that price tag! Amazing that this is already for sale on Lenovo's website.

    I think it is absurd that the liquid cooling is activated at 84 degrees. It would be much better if it worked continuously and the speed of the pump changed as the temperature changed. I think it would be much more efficient to keep it below 80 degrees rather than waiting for it to rise to 84 degrees. I also don't think this new cooling system can be called ‘liquid cooling’. This is because that liquid cannot be passed through a radiator. I'm also sceptical about whether the pump does anything. Because the pump rotates the hot liquid in the system, the liquid does not cool down while moving. So it's not like desktop systems. It would be fine without a pump.

    I know this laptop was built to push the limits as far as compact performance, but I think they could of downsized the battery and made it removable. I’d imagine most gaming laptop players are connected to the charger most of the time they game anyways. And because of that the battery will need to be replaced more frequently. With the freed space they could of spread the upgradable components around better to access them when you’re ready to upgrade.
    I guess to add I never minded having a thicker laptop for gaming. It was the weight that I wasn’t thrilled with. But if a PC company would acknowledge that “size doesn’t matter” and give you the access and space to upgrade THEN more people would consider one over like a Steam Deck or a standard rig. This specific one is of of course priced *way* over most of any type of PC, but yeah lol

Granted they are tanks, but you can get them with desktop processors so they actually perform a bit better, and you can repair them, or if motherboard dies you can save the processor. Also assuming you actually want to use it, a Clevo has the heatsinks right under the bottom cover so you can repaste fairly easily. Completely different class of machine, actually a usable tool. @rowankeltizar5961 again I am looking for portability. Since I have 4090s gaming desktops. The EON17-X is 7.26lbs. The Acer Predator 17X is 6.61lbs and I thought it was heavy. The ASUS Strix Scar 16 (I owned for 2wks) is 5.7lbs which I thought it would be the max I would consider portable. This Legion 9i is about that weight.

A part of me wants to buy this laptop because I like fancy things...owning a piece of history is kind of appealing I guess. I can always put it on a payment plan. $300 a month isn't that much in the scheme of things. Some people pay over $100 for their phone bill! I'm paying $15 a month. That said, I definitely wouldn't buy it at full price, maybe in a year we will get it on sale. Even then though, I still care about performance/value so probably I would get their normal 7i or Origin 17-x for the value that has a 4k screen and the same hardware.

      you can get a legion 5 with a Ryzen7 5800H + Radeon iGPU + 3050ti w/ 4GB
      the gpu is overclockable (you can just leave it at max power if you use it as a desktop replacement, the temps are fine)
      I got one in store like a year ago or so, pulled the ssd and ram and replaced the ram w/ 64GB DDR4 and x2 1TB WD Black nvme drives
      the laptop has a real MUX, so you can do optimus stuff as well as vfio, pcie-passthrough, etc
      you should be able to pick up one cheap, maybe even the newer version (get AMD, its far superior in laptops ive done the testing; more faster cores for less power and less money)
      put in like 32GB ram and youll prob be OK (zfs likes using ram as an arc and i use vms alot, so i want all the rams...)
      replace the ssd w/ 2 matching ones (I use linux as a hypervisor w/ encrypted zfs and zstd inline compression) I get around 12-14GB/s read speeds and 10-12GB/s write speeds
      {I also did a ceramic conformal coating surrounding both dies, and replaced the thermal paste with derbauer's liquid metal--- DONT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW, WHICH METALS ARE CHEMICALLY APPROPRIATE, AND HOW TO CLEAN IT SAFELY}
      vfio/pcie-passthrough
      x86/64 arm32/64 riscv32/64 full virtualization
      blender for 3d modeling, rigging, etc for 3d characters
      machine learning for facial recognition and full body/hand motion tracking
      obs/kdenlive/audacity for creating esoteric fully detailed HD instructional walkthroughs
      steam/proton runs everything (and most stuff at 4k-ish; i havent bought any new games in a while)
      I dont really know exactly which software you need for interior design, but i cant imagine it will be anywhere near as taxing as doing multiple of the above listed at the same time,
      so i think you should be just fine....
      I wouldnt get a brand new model, I would try to get a new in box, but older model then just do the disk and ram upgrades, they will help far more than RGB lights or the very latest processor ( getting the data into the processor is where most consumer machines bottleneck much of the time, if the data gets into ram faster and all of it is already in ram the cpu will just go full tilt until its finished)

    My MSI GE66 (12700H) cries vs. this behemoths. When I got early last year there were no HX CPUs (from Intel or AMD). MSI actually launched the GE67 HX with an Intel HX CPU and a slightly updated chassis before still in 2022. But this year HX CPUs became much more common.

    @austin Have you noticed that gaming laptop's GPU max TDP dropped from 200w to 175w despite better laptop cooling?
    3, now almost 4 years ago nvidia had crammed a better than 2080ti GPU, the quadro rtx 6000 into a 15' 3kg asus studioproart laptop. It had a 200w TDP, 24gb of vram and was 754mm sq. The rtx 4090 desktop is just 609mm sq. When undervolted it uses around 250 to 300w, so a laptop version with the same specs as desktop 4090 with 230w can certainly be within 10-15% of the undervolted desktop 4090. Afterall, the 150w 3070ti is within 15-17% of a desktop 3070ti despite the 3070ti having 2x the tdp, more cores and faster vram.
    So no, this $4000 laptop is a waste of money. Nvidia is artificially jacking up the prices.
    6 to 7 years ago $4000 laptops packed SLI gtx 1080's and 1070's which beat even a 1080ti desktop

      @@trypwyre9024 Hidden? Its freely available. But techtubers and techenthusaists seem to forget everything when it comes to laptops.
      Did you know when you had pascal and turing, laptops had full access to their tdp's. Meaning a 150w card would run at 150w when pushed. Unlike with rtx 3000 and 4000 where a 100w card might run below 100w due to cpu using some power due to dynamic boost. So we are lied to once again.
      Did you know you could undervolt intel's 4th to 9th gen cpu's and make 'em run 5 to 10 degrees cooler with more perf? Now? Intel uses some BS security excuse to only let the hx and hk cpu's undervolt and those cpu's cost more.
      Ryzen 9 on laptops has been a giant scam. Ryzen 5000 mixes zen 2 and zen 3 under the same name. Ryzen 7000 on laptops mixes zen 1, 2, 3 and 4 under the same ryzen 7000 naming.
      Amd's radeon rx6800m/6850mxt are a scam since the have nothing to do with rx6800 series. Amd's rx7700s is a giant scam as well.
