Since you did efforts to make and share a straightforward and practical video I'm sure I must make a comment thanking you. Good job
Great job on the video. Short, to the point, and very educational. Just what I need at this time.
You kept saying previous owner, and I just kept going “me” cause I bought my car at 20k miles salvaged. When I installed a watts link on my mustang, it came with a diff cover that let the links attach to the cover. Boy that thing leaked ALL the fluid out the first time I installed it. The bolts backed out and the cover separated from the diff from all the forces on the watts link. When I installed the cover for a third time I did all these steps and it is finally dry as a bone! These tips def work, for my application I added some thread locker and I marked the bolts with paint to be able to visually check if the bolts were starting to back out. Haven’t had a problem since! Thanks for the content Shredder!
For some reason RUclips isn't gibing me a "thumbs up" option.....but THUMBS UP! Thanks!
Thanks a lot for all these videos, very educationnal! Very happy that you are making videos with 350Z parts since I am drifting my 350Z, it will help a lot haha
Great video for an 84 year old working on a 1949 Packard Custom Eight............Thank You for your insight
Rock on old timer, Godbless!
And a female that's trying to figure how to do this but not take it off..I will never get all that done.
Very informative! Thanks so much for making this vid!
You DON’T need to remove the diff to replace the seal. It is a ton of work for no reason. It is very easy to do wile it is attached.
I think it was already off for the video!
@@chim7741 he said at the beginning of the video you’re obviously going to need to pull your diff out
Please elaborate bc I don't want to pay $900 to fix my 20 year old Mercedes clk 320!
@@yodatagz you don’t need it off lol
Some diffs you have to remove or you won’t be able to get the rear plate off
Me, owner of a fwd car: “Mhh very interesting I should watch that” xD you never know when it’ll come in useful
Front wheel drive, disgusting 🤮
Dudeee I watched you on the drifting show you go hard afff man get it up 👌👌
most times when i service anything with a crush washer ill file the edge flat again where it makes the seal between the bolt face and part, you can get away with it 2-3 times
This is some macgyver type of stuff! Very onformative!
Great video...thanks
Have to do my 79 Cutlass before I put it away for the winter...geez...dont think Im gonna take it off the car 🤔 ...no
i live in the uk and bought an 200sx s14a around end of October, i didnt want to put it on the road until april this year because in the uk even in mild weather the government or whoever puts around a half inch of salt on the roads and being an old car it will just rust when that salt gets in it so i didnt bother.. now with this corona crysis i cant afford to put it on the road its just in my garage every time i see it i get so annoyed i cant drive the thing.
but anyway i got a spare diff which is leaking and i wasnt gonna do anything with it but after this video might dust off my tools and perhaps fit it
I appreciate your video. Thank you
Great video.. thanks... can this be done without removing tire diff?
Hey, thanks for the video. Does it come off ok as well?
To save you all some time. Put perfectly clean container under the differential and collect your fluid, keeping it clean. Put silicone or a new gasket on, and slap the cover back on, making sure to torque the bolts correctly. Put fluid back in and you're good. Now, if you haven't recently replaced your fluid, and that fluid you took out is old, just go ahead and buy a few new bottles of whatever your diff needs and dump the old stuff. In my case, I had a shop work on my rear end and they didn't seal it up right, so I saved the brand new fluid and used an old bottle to spray it back into the diff. In your case you'll probably just buy new stuff, so get a little more than what your rear end takes and squeeze it in while making sure the bottle is mostly full. Do this by putting the other fluid into the bottle you are using to keep it filled up. This way you don't need a pump. Fill until it begins to gently pour out, wait until it stops pouring and you're done.
I was wondering the same thing. If you have to take all this off. Why can't you do all this with the part on. I can't get all that off but I can do this while it's on.
A $500 charge from Cadillac service department on my 2016 SRX. I’m going to ask my son-in-law if this is something he can take on. Thank you for the video.
Your son can take it on, it's just that for most guys, it will take them 15 hours. The car will sit there for many days and many weeks. Or if they start at 10am-5pm will come, and they are still working on it. Maybe because they got stuck on a particular step. A missing socket, missing part, need replacement part, etc. That $500 u save, will come out of your son in laws time in life. No doubt he can do it. But at what cost.
Thank you very much
If you just buy the gasket do you still need to put down a the sealant or if you have the gasket that’s plenty enough? My 04 ford f250 needs gasket replaced and it’s only $10 bucks for the gasket.
Just subscribed, will be doing this on my F250. I do doubt that Oreilys will have "Right Stuff" though.
I can see why pulling the diff would be an option for anyone who is looking to reseal their diffs. The reason being is oil contamination during the curing process if not cleaned throughly. If the diff is still on the car I can see some remaining diff fluid flowing down and getting into the new seal and ruining it. Other than that, love this vid!
Loving that 350 in the background. Cant wait to put my car into your door...while your parked in the pits ;)
Is it possible for the leak to be coming from the left or right side the connects to the wheels rather than the seam of the cover?
Did you have to drain the diff before this?
I’m bout to buy a car a Jeep Liberty and he said this has a leak and to fix it but I don’t have tools and I wish I can do this myself this looks fun
Probably too late. But don’t buy a Jeep.
Dodge Dakota 2000 v6 axel has a leek new owner any learning tips please
What car is this for?
Hey sorry for this thought dumb question but I’m a situation where I don’t have time to look for my leak, I know it leaks from diff. My car is also lowered and don’t have flat ground to jack up and check. Where are all the possible leaking areas? I might have bent it from hitting the ground or something, I think it might just be an old gasket, can that happen? I don’t think it’s ever been taken apart. Just need to make sure it stops leaking so I can have my car for the future. Thanks! I’m in a tough spot and don’t have money for a shop. Need to fix this and don’t have time to play with it now
Never hurts to ask and community is a great place to do so!
did he use the tape?
Hey man do you play Project Cars 2? I’ve been practicing on my sim and I made a little demo of me practicing the shift lock method in an FRS on my channel. I’d love for you to critique it if you have time 👌🏼 You’re kind of my role model now (I can’t drive yet)
Why does the differential have to come off the car? It seems like as long as it was drained first, it could be done while still attached, no? Maybe I'm overlooking something.
i was thinking the same exact thing
There must’ve been other reasons he pulled it out-I don’t know why he doesn’t reply
@@gregl2249 i replied to the same question up above. Nissan's (and lots of other cars) use the back cover to mount to the subframe, therefore MUST be pulled to gain access, its not like an old ford or chevy.
Well my shop put on JB weld I think he cracked it he was the last one to work on it he put in my axle seals and transmission and I replaced my rear differential in 2020 how can a crack get on it ???let me no and if that JB weld like he said would last a life of my car helll no
Every time my truck downshifts, there is a grinding noise that sounds like it's comin from the back right. I was just wonderin if anybody knew what the heck is causing it
It'd be better to use a plastic scraper/non-metal tools than a razor blade so you don't scratch up the surface and create more ways for it to leak :p
Rafee very good tip! I was careful but you're right it could cause gouging if you're not careful
Heeyyyyyyy… you that guy from elite driver on Netflix lol
Don't do what this huy did.dont take it off your car.just fix it as it is under car.
What if the pumpkin is welded on?
you can still pull the back cover to check it and re-seal
It doesn't matter, your using permatex black. . You can mar the metal on the lip, use permatex black, and you will have no leaks. That's the advantage of gasket maker.
that was a wrench? and why can’t he do this with it on the car?
No gasket?
Easy and cleaner way is to use the gasket....
u just made that bead thinner around the bolt hole when u blotted it with ur finger, now theres a greater chance of a leak, smh
"son of David Decovney"
Too bad mine is fine, but I still learned a lot from this video. Thank you!
Metal on aluminum and not using a star pattern to slowly release the fasteners. Hmm
nothing is 'sprung' on the cover so no reason to unbolt in any sort of pattern. you can see when i put it back together i went in a star pattern and slowly tightened.
You don’t have to take off the dif to do this
Who in their right mind pulls out the rear end. You need to change the oil anyway.
ITS TOTALLY DIFFERENT IF IT ACTUALLY ON THE CAR!!!
So you go around and assume the gender of who worked on it last?
🙄
@@joedtorres2321 🤣
Bro you don’t need to remove it to put on a new seal 🤦♂️. I need to change my air filter, I’ll just pull out my engine to do it😂😂😂.
My time is worth A LOT, so this isn’t a simple $5 dollar fix.
Useing a razor blade on mateing surfaces instead of a plastic scraper seems like a bad idea
