- How to level a cool season lawn or top dress a lawn with SAND my grass is a cool season blend of Kentucky Bluegrass and perennial rye grass with some fescue mixed in that is important when getting ready to level the lawn
Landscape rake I used: amzn.to/30yQGXN
Leveling the lawn today with the help of Jeremy from the Greener Lawn / @thegreenerlawn
Adding the sand and leveling it out will help take out all the bumps and low spots I have that make the reel mower scalp and then cut high as the mower goes through the low areas. You have to be careful as to not put too much out and smother the grass not allowing it to grow back. This video shows the process that I did to level for the first time.
Sunjoe dethatcher/ scarifier: amzn.to/2I2q0rH
The greenworks dethatcher: amzn.to/2WyWnXV
Step 1: Mow the lawn LOW mowed at 5/8" with @connorward's Toro Greensmaster 1000
Step 2: Break out the Greenworks Dethatcher (man that thing BLOWS) and pull out as much thatch as possible
Step 3: Clean up the grass and thatch with the John Deere D110 lawn tractor
Step 4 (didn't hit the record button apparently): I put down an application 28-0-0 to push growth
Step 5: Put down the sand and start leveling Using the lawn leveling rake, I just used a landscape rake.
Hope this video helps anyone trying to tackle this project! Feel free to comment with any questions and I will answer them as best I can!

Brett's grasscapades I’m debating on whether I need a lawn leveling rake or just a wide rake like yours.
I think it really depends on how much and how often you plan on leveling. The rake did well and was much cheaper than buying the actual leveling rake, however I don't know if it works AS well. I am planning on making my own leveling rake at some point this year, I'll document how that goes.
@@Brettsgrasscapades i will keep in mind.when i need you will contact you.
Very nice! Can’t wait to get to my sand stage! .... is it normal to be excited for lawn work?
Yes! I'm beyond excited and ready for the season.
Thanks brother for the shout out.. you had done work b4 I decided to make an appearance.... lol
Well friggin’ done for your first edited video.... that was great stuff! Loved the best use I’ve ever seen for a Chevy.... tripod... it’s like a rock... and held that camera well!
I will have to find that tree hit.... lol how in the world did you hit it... my back was to you... I don’t even want to ask if you were looking at.... nope not going to ask ..... 🤣
Well friggin done ! I can say I’m proud of you and your small yard, small blade and lifted truck for
Compensation!
Thanks man I really appreciate the help yesterday!
Sideways phone! All kinds of editing! Music! Looked great! Maybe tell a little more about what you are doing and why you are doing it and what grass type stuff like that. All and all good job 👍🏻 oh did u find the cat😂
Thanks for the input man! I appreciate you watching! Yes the cat was found! Turns out he doesn't like being tortured by the kids so he hides from them.
Looking forward to the results. Tell ya one thing, your editing is on point. You make a good video
Thanks man I appreciate it! This was my first try at editing and I'm happy with how she turned out! I really appreciate you watching!
What did you use to spread the sand around?
Teamwork Makes the DreamWork! Nicely done sir
Thanks Paul!
I Dethatched and Aerated my Zoyzia about 3 weeks ago. It's June and upper 90's Can I hit a 28-0-0 now? How did you water after applying 28-0-0 to your lawn?
So very informative and very well done. Love it!
Thanks mate! Appreciate you watching!
i need a lawn like that in my property :-)
Need to slow the video down at around 6 minutes and give details about how to spread out the sand, what tools are used, etc.
you didn't explain what you were doing or why.
Another lawntuber on my sub list. Glad I found you on Connors golf video...looking forward to your lawn season...greetings from Germany
Glad you found me! I'm looking forward to this year as well!
Looks good Brett!! That pesky Greener Lawn fella....tell him you are not buying life insurance!! 😂😂😂. Have a good one brother! Nice truck btw! 👍🏼
Hes always hanging around! I'm thinking he really likes the short cut look! Thanks for watching man I really appreciate it.
Truck did it’s job well.... tripod...... well done Chevy ..... well done!
That Greener lawn is very pesky.... I’ve never been able to get him to leave me alone my whole life!
I would be on a very small hit list if he were to take a policy ..... 😳
if you worked that hard at work i would be thrilled!! You have more lawn equipment than a pro, and gave no love to the JD greens mower! Also looks like you forgot to shave.
I can always count on you for the constructive criticism! I wanted a quick mow so the wider Toro greensmaster 1000 was the choice.
Your yard looks insane!

Great video. You are going to be happy with the results.
Thanks man! I'm looking forward to seeing the results!
Great vid. You have to made a tour of the house in front of yours 🤩
What kinda grass you got ? And what height you mowing? Looks great 👍
I've got a cool season blend of mostly Kentucky blue grass and some perennial rye as well and mowing at .65"
Lol you so funny
I just had to stop by and see your most popular video. Now I just need you to come level my yard.
Could I level with sand on tall fescue?
I don't see any reason why you couldn't. I don't know anyone who has but it should be the same process. I would mow it short prior to doing it and make sure to only level when the grass is really growing good.
Location and type of grass?
I'm located in northern Utah and have a cool season blend of kbg PRG and fescue. Thanks for watching!
How many times have you leveled with sand in the past? Looks good.
Today was the first time. I've watched videos on how to do it about 6000 times though so that makes me a pro right??? Thanks for watching man!
Damn you have been cutting your lawn that low and you have never leveled it. If I cut that low half my yard would be scalped and the other half would look good because I have to many bumps. Would love do level it just dont think I would want to send that much money doing that. If you dont mind how much did you pay for the cubic yard?
@@dougblacksill4626 yeah the builder who was the previous homeowner did a pretty good job leveling it before they put the sod in. The sand I used was about 80 buck a yard which is not cheap but I should have to use way less next time and once it's done it will be worth it in my mind!
How much did a yard cover? Don’t know how many sq ft the front of your yard is.
My front yard is roughly 2500 SF and it took about 4 yards. It took a lot more than I thought it would have but I guess it was worse than I thought when it comes to dips and what not.
Sand. Glorious sand. Nice work man. Makes me want to go out and put some down on my lawn!
Haha it was a ton of work but hopefully it will help get all the small bumps and dips out of the lawn. Thanks for watching!
I need to pick up some of your editing skills for my vids. Very nice work Brett. :-)
Thanks for the compliment but I am still learning, I just did everything vis iMovie and it was pretty straight forward and easy!
Did you use a drag mat?
I used a pallet racking insert because I had it laying around. I think a drag mat would have worked better though.
Nice edge cutting
Thank you sir!
What type of grass is this
It's a cool season blend of kbg and PRG mostly. Thanks for watching!
Nice nice keep it up
Fresh idea. (y)
Great job👍
Dang.........! Nice level grass with concrete. How do you make that happen? We bough a house and landscapers put down Bermuda Tiffway 419 sod. Very un even surface but most importantly the sod is way higher then the concrete. What can I do to make it flush to concrete??
Man that is tough! I'm not 100% sure what to do to bring the level down?
How tall are you mowing it at this point Jesse?
Hey man,
Sorry it took a while to reply I just saw this.
After mowing my grass is at 1-1/2” and my sod is about 3/4” taller than my concrete. I think I will have to take all of my grass sod off and level to the concrete and seed. Project to do in a year or so.
Question, I’ve looked and called a few places and nobody seems to want to give a cost for the toro reel mower? Was it new?
@@jessecolin6046 sorry I didn't realize I hadn't replied. The Toro was used when I purchased it, new they are 8-10k or more so the used market is the only real way it makes buying one feasible I think. That being said I paid about 400 for mine.
However someone did buy it ! Sorry, but had to point it out.
Thankfully I got it used so I didn't pay full price. Thanks for watching man!
Should I mix 50 % sand and 50% peatmoss/compost?
I really think that's up to you. I did 100% sand because I didn't need too much leveling, if it was significantly lower in places I may have done the sand compost mix or a topsoil mix.
@@Brettsgrasscapades ok. I definitely need some leveling. I am in Minneapolis and just about to get going in my yard next week. I am going to aerate again. Then going to spread over seed and malorganite then level. Is that a good sequence?
Did you put a pre-emergent down? How hot does it get in the summer there? If it gets really hot I'd wait until fall to seed. If not that should be a good plan!
@@Brettsgrasscapades not yet for pre emergent. I do have patches that need filling with thin a top soil
These areas def need reseeding
Brett, what kind of sand did you get?
I used Mason sand screened to 2mm. My local landscape supply had it.
Nothing. Zero. Nada. Zilch. What I learned. Don't waste your time.
