- I've always wanted to hike along the Great Wall of China, but camping there was a whole nother level. It was a 10/10 unique adventure and definitely made it onto my BEST travel bucket list.

If every visitor steps down a brick from this unrestored and unprotected section of the Great Wall in a few decades these magnificent and beautiful structures will no longer exist. I'm against you doing this, but I love this video.
On the other hand, interest will lead to restoration and survival - and this is already happening. Minimal restoration of what the centuries of wind and rain have done, retaining the original worn features but stabilising them and making it more robust and safe.
Just a bit worried about conservation, otherwise good one…stay safe and enjoy China..
@BeijingBuzzz-China-Travel Say it's easy but it's a monumental task.and a lot of money needed to. restore it.Best not to disturb the site to make the task easy to restore. Dont make sense to replace old bricks with new concrete bricks.
Totally understand your point. It would be amazing if the government watched the video lol and comes up w a strategy for how tourists can hike and camp safely while adhering to the rules and protocols, similar to those in place for Mount Everest in Lhasa like limiting the number of tourists could help preserve this area + travel agencies offer these packages = win win situation for all idk 🤷🏽♀️

The Great Wall is a piece of Art, every tourist has the responsibility to take good care of it !

I have to clarify: the Great Wall is a nationally protected cultural relic in China. Climbing or camping on the undeveloped Great Wall is illegal, and if you are caught, you may be fined. If it is determined that you are destroying cultural relics, you will face the risk of criminal prosecution, and the crime of destroying cultural relics in China can be punished by up to 5 years in prison.
So, I hope you will also know the risks while enjoying yourself.

Spending the night on the Great Wall, watching the sun rise from one of the world's Seven Wonders--this has got be on everyone's bucket list! My only reservation is that you camped out on what looks like a particularly ruined (and potentially unstable) section, introducing issues of safety and historical preservation.
Probably not going to collapse anytime soon because it probably been there for thousands of years.
@@foodparadise5792 Actually what we see now is hundreds, not thousands of years old, and from the video you can already see it has been falling apart. And that probably started happening before tourists started camping atop the towers.

I still don’t think it’s illegal because I’ve seen some (chinese) flags of hiking and climbing groups and associations. Also passed by some people here and there along the way. And if it was illegal I would’ve never posted this video online 😅

This video give me even greater appreciation for ancient Chinese efforts trying to protect themself realizing "tourist spots" were cake walk by the terrain you guys were showing, still succumb to invasion from the north many times!

This is not a negative comment, but I'm just wondering how was the potty situation up there. I believe all the camper took great care of the trash and didn't leave anything behind. But just wanted to know if the tour guide made sure the potty situation was also well taken care of.
Thanks for sharing the camping experience. I'd like to see this to be better managed by the local authorities if they want this to be a good attraction, including:
1. safety measures
2. limited quota
3. certain fees to be used to maintain the camp sites.
4. licensing and training for the tour guides.
Because, remember, the more ppl climb and camp at the great wall, easier it can collapse and also more rescue forces needed to be put in place. Clearly I don't see those tour guides are trained or equipped for basic rescuing.
It has nothing to do with the local authorities, and camping on the Great Wall is absolutely not allowed, but because the wall is too long to manage, savvy guides take advantage of this management loophole to make money.
Campaign at the great wall it's illegal because it damages the wall that so many people deid to build(~ 1.000.000 people)

It will be a tragic joke if irresponsible tourists in accomplice with nearby residents bring down the great wall when thousand of years Northern invaders failed. The authorities have to ban camping and overnight stay before it goes viral.

This section of the Great Wall is not within the scenic area, so if an accident occurs, one must bear the responsibility themselves. Ordinary tourists should not try.
Few days ago, I watched a tourist camping in the great wall. His tour guide is a 50+ year old woman. She fetch him there and left the place. She told him that he must wake up by 5.00am the next morning and leave earlier as it's illegal. He slept inside the tower as there will be a "roof" above him. The difference between both the camping is that yours is very dangerous - the climbing and the sleeping place. I noticed that his climbing on the great wall is easier, not so steep. Not necessarily to use his hand while climbing.
I haven’t seen that video but I can imagine sleeping in popular areas of the Great Wall is not allowed. I think I was in Jiankou, lots of climbing with our hands 😂 I even fell once and almost slipped off the mountain hahaha but thank god someone helped me. It is definitely a bit dangerous.

Although it's a great video capturing what must have been an awesome experience, I have to succumb to the rare need to comment about this, especially having seen parkour tourists damaging the historic building in Italy the other day.
Obviously, there is a demand for camping experiences at one of the most historic ancient places in the world, the place you camped at has not been prepared as a camping facilities. I suppose the government should give it some thought about developing and building up facilities to suppose these non conventional attractions. Giving you guys the benefit of the doubt that you didn't damage anything to get to the "camping site", didn't leave any waste (human or otherwise), didn't bring home any "souvenirs", didn't leave any "I was here" marks, I somehow feel a sense of outrage at this particular activity. But I've seen plenty of vloggers doing some of the things I mentioned above.
There are comments saying defending these activities, citing the interest would result in the preservation and restoration of this ancient structure. How do you trace the flow of logic that starts with activities that degrade the artifact, to the preservation and restoration of it?!? And the government should allocate funding to restore what visitors break, ahead of the needs of people who are still impoverished ... no problem.
Also, if anything were to happen to you due to absence of safety structures or encounters with wildlife, there are going to be propagandistic news splashed all over MSM, "Travel Alert! tourists hurt at Great Wall of China!" It's like visiting a friend's house and insisting on climbing onto the roof, falling off the roof and then throwing your friend under the bus. Plus, whoever the government official in charge of that area, will have the dumb luck of bearing the brunt of the angst from the central government. You made some good points. It would be great if the gov indeed would set up some rules and protocols just like some well known outdoor spots (e.g mount Everest base camp) so it’s still safe and protected but can also attract many tourists to visit the place. @@NayomiqueOfficial Alright, I'll agree with you on this much. The ball's back on the government's court (pun intended) to develop this tourist demand. The way it works there in China, someone at the grassroot level needs escalate this up the chain of command to raise this to the government's attention for action, especially on a national level given that the wall spans so many provinces.
Searching back through youtube, I discovered this has been happening for years with one of the vlogs showing tents inside tower sections being supported by pins embedded in the walls of the tower. Hopefully the government gets on top of this problem/demand/opportunity asap.
