I had a 98 4runner V6. Worst engine I ever owned. Biggest money pit truck ever. I had good times with it, the other times are worrying about maintenance and new engine codes every other week. 3rd gens and 2nd gens are the least reliable 4runners. Apparently the V8 was only offered in the early years so they are highly sought after. Also the only downside to these cars is the X-REAS suspension system. It essentially links both shock absorbers reservoir from one corner to another like an X. Once it starts leaking you have to replace one entire part of the X (there's 2) and it's very expensive. Besides that these cars are supposed to be bulletproof. Good Review!
@@loveoneanotherasihaveloved8327 I have had absolutely no issues! I put a new battery in my 4 runner after 11 years and changed the oil. Congrats on your new (to you) 4Runner.

I had to replace the driveshaft, radiator, shocks and did two timing belt changes. Just put KO2 tires. Had an annoying check engine light from secondary air pump, but went away for now. Lol
Great review as always man. I am in the market for one. The V8 has a timing belt and the V6 has a chain. Added maintenance cost there to consider every 90k miles. Also, if it breaks, this motor is an interference motor unlike the previous gen motor. Expensive situation :(.
That conventional wisdom about timing chains Vs timing belts is a little misleading. How often does the water pump get changed when there is a timing chain instead of a belt? (Hint, after it fails) Do the timing chains last forever? Are they as easy to DIY? Do they not have their own issues that cost money to fix, like bad guides? The V8 will outlive the V6 as long as the timing belt gets done. Also, it is a pretty easy job to do at home with a few special tools that aren’t expensive, you just have to follow all the steps. Toyota doesn’t make things that complicated. If you’re going to drive vehicles that are over 10 years old it makes sense to learn to maintain them yourself.
@@kftc1980 Very well said Kevin. People act like they need to be a NASA engineer to change a timing belt on a V8 engine. Shits not that complicated. As you said, proper tools, take your time and life is good!
I have a 2003 4Runner Limited edition rear wheel drive with the 8 cylinder engine and I don't find it lethargic at all. The torque is more than adequate when one punches it. I get about 300 miles per fill up. Your review comes off as negative, IMO.
@@MeynMotorGroup Not at all. I watched all types of videos on this SUV before I purchased it and the potential bad was outweighed by the good. My point was a matter of fact. For an approximate 2-ton car the engine puts out more than enough torque to make the SUV go.

I own a 2005 limited v8 and find the vehicle has plenty of smooth power . In fact , I was shopping for a Lexus but drove and bought the 4 Runner for it smooth power in the v 8 limited . And Gas mileage isn’t bad.
This has a 4 speed auto. The 5 speed auto didn’t arrive until 2005.the 5 speed auto really helps getting the 4Runner moving from a stop. 1st, 2nd and 3rd subjectively feel like shorter gearing to get up to speed faster.
This '03 = cousin of my '04 GX w/ the same 2UZ-FE + 5speed tranny.. Almost identical color as mine too, but I only got 139K.. These apocalypse machines most definitely coveted & should last another 300+K w/ normal maintenance.. $7G price tag sounds about right hah.. FYI, the 4Runner's X-REAS system is comparable to the GX's KDSS.. Got a friend w/ a '98 4Runner V6 w/ 230K on the clock, still orig. engine + tranny & it just doesn't wanna break..
I'm looking into getting one of these. From what I've read they received an engine update in 2005 that bumped HP by like 30 or so. Anyone have any experience with these and can tell me if the difference in real world use is noticeable or significant? Basically is it worth the extra couple grand that I see them seem to go for.
I am also looking. I believe you're correct on the 05. I remember someone commenting though if you needed to replace the engine, then you're limited to finding a 05 only motor. Also, V8 timing belt and the V6 has a chain so extra maintenance cost for the belt. The V8 is an interference motor. If it breaks then you will need a rebuild.
The only reason I wouldn't get the V8 is because that timing belt needs to be replaced. The V6 is less maintenance and enough power for a big SUV. If I wanna go fast I'll jump in my IS350.
What do you think of the VW ID>4? I Love It, saw one in the parking lot about a month ago & it's awesome much more impressive viewing it in person! Many drivers who owned multiple cars have always expressed satisfaction in more basic transportation and as a kid I never understood but after driving so many cars, I finally get it
Starting in ‘05, the V8 produced 270hp & 330 lb. ft of torque vs 235hp for the ‘04 V8 models ! Yup that's a lot of money for the miles but Toyota products tend to demand that much. When I was looking for an LS 460, a 350k mile 07 was going for over $8k. Toyotas in general hold their value but the insane pandemic demand has now added to that

@@kftc1980 Very well said Kevin. People act like they need to be a NASA engineer to change a timing belt on a V8 engine. Shits not that complicated. As you said, proper tools, take your time and life is good!
Only a nut head v8 owner would say that lol, v6 is way more reliable and maintenance free, the chains never ever need replacement.
My 95 with the 3.0 V6 is at 119,000 miles. Not even broken in
I have a 2003 4Runner Limited edition rear wheel drive with the 8 cylinder engine and I don't find it lethargic at all. The torque is more than adequate when one punches it. I get about 300 miles per fill up. Your review comes off as negative, IMO.
So you only like it when reviewers say nice things about the products you own? What you’re looking for isn’t a review then, you want a commercial…
@@MeynMotorGroup Not at all. I watched all types of videos on this SUV before I purchased it and the potential bad was outweighed by the good. My point was a matter of fact. For an approximate 2-ton car the engine puts out more than enough torque to make the SUV go.
@@erroltorres8557 God Bless my friend enjoy your car
@@MeynMotorGroup Thank you. I have so far, and as my DIY project, I look forward to making it as "fresh out of the showroom" as possible. I hope that it continues to surprise me in a positive way. Always be blessed!
I own a 2005 limited v8 and find the vehicle has plenty of smooth power . In fact , I was shopping for a Lexus but drove and bought the 4 Runner for it smooth power in the v 8 limited . And Gas mileage isn’t bad.
Very interesting review Kevin. Clearly this vehicle was owned by somebody who really cared for it.
I agree my friend!
Looks great!!!!And still fetching great money!!!!
I agree! And yes resale value is great on these
Just shows if you look after a vehicle well they will last. Thanks Kevin.
You are absolutely right!
115000 on mine is still in the breaking inn period!
That’s a brand new truck still!
This has a 4 speed auto. The 5 speed auto didn’t arrive until 2005.the 5 speed auto really helps getting the 4Runner moving from a stop. 1st, 2nd and 3rd subjectively feel like shorter gearing to get up to speed faster.
Actually the V8 came with 5 speed from the start, meaning from 2003 onwards. The V6 started out with the 4 speed.
5 speed
Brother injust picked up a 16 4runner ..love it man
Very nice my friend so now you got the Camry and the 4Runner that's a nice combo right there
@@MeynMotorGroup bro got rid of the Camry , kept the 4wd pilot and traded Camry for a 4runner. Im all over the place
This is a pleasant surprise.
Yea these things refuse to die
I almost bought a 2006 4Runner with 4.0 V6. probably should have.
Very solid!
Agreed!
If it breaks then you will need a rebuild.
i have a 05 sport v8 350k miles
it’s my daily driver
I also have a 2003 Toyota 4Runner 2wd 4.7 v8
It has around 460k
The only reason I wouldn't get the V8 is because that timing belt needs to be replaced. The V6 is less maintenance and enough power for a big SUV. If I wanna go fast I'll jump in my IS350.
I have this vehicle best in the world ! I have 197 thousand miles !
What do you think of the VW ID>4? I Love It, saw one in the parking lot about a month ago & it's awesome much more impressive viewing it in person! Also The new Corolla Cross is coming out & another awesome vehicle, with gas prices being what they are I think I'm gonna have to go with a more energy efficient crossover/SUV & those two I mentioned seem to check all the boxes...CHEERS!
If I had more subscribers I would have gotten the ID 4 as a press car to test for a week but yea I like the way VWs drive nice little cars. Haven't heard much about the Corolla Cross going to have to look into that
I wish they still offered the v8
Thanks for doing those old car videos! I’m still debating about keeping my 2020 CX-5 10 years or upgrade at the end of my lease 😂
That's a good problem to have! Def up to you I think in the next coming years Mazda will bring our their inline 6 engines so might want to upgrade 😅
There’s one for sale online that has 420k miles selling for 6k
V8 is the best engine bro 😎 and there’s nothing wrong
Scoop them up now before they get too expensive. Even the 6 cylinder ones.
Way better than the 3rd gens (I came from a 3rd gen)
It's a tank and beast and a hell of a classic SUV for sure bro 👍🏾👍🏾
Def a dependable little ride bro!
@@MeynMotorGroup Yeah bro
I found a 4Runner with 270k miles is it worth it?
Where is the emergency handbrake located
It’s done with a pedal on the left of the pedal box
Should I buy new or usd?
All 4Runner generations are dorky when New…LOL but as they age they all become gems. No 4Runner review should be tested on how fast you can do 0-60, same way no one would take a Corvette off-road.
wow, they change the trans fluid or not? , thanks
I'm sure they had to, reacts really well!
Changed my pic but still Rahz Al Ghul. The older I get I feel like I need to get an SUV currently in the LS460L gonna be hard to replace it but I find myself wanting an SUV what would you recommend if I’m coming from that?
Not sure what your budget is but you would love the new RX 350
Now that I'm getting in shape lost 100 lbs I put on from 7 surgeries to save my leg I'm looking for a fun sporty ride like an Acura or lexus IS or GS used of course unfortunately ones I was looking at over the past yr and a half they are up in cost 7 grand plus
Massive congrats on the weight loss! Yea the used car prices have really shot up
I was sold on the 2013 GS 350 thanks to this channel lol It's a great car! But these 4runner's are looking real reliable. Might have to trade my GS for the 4Runner
Hey Kevin
Hey my friend thanks for stopping by!
Hey Kevin great job also it's awesome you money reviewing cars we love.. I'm jealous 😂 I gotta find a dealership to let me review their rides 😂🤣😂
You def should! Especially if you focus on used cars and target SEO properly I think you can have yourself a growing channel
I just bought a 4th gen 2003 limited a few days ago with the 4wd V8. I've been looking for this model for a few months now. Personally, I don't like the 5th gen because of the Darth Vader look which is really over done.
This is not a surprise, it would be if it was a bmw, benz , audi, or 4 cylinder ford or chevy.
What if you reviewed a Toyota Sienna 🤔
I want to review one!
@@MeynMotorGroup that’s what I’m talking about. My family has this 2004 Toyota Sienna and something about its suspension makes it enjoyable to drive. The car is huge but feels small when handling it. I’ve heard you mention that you like this about cars so that why I think it’s be great for you to review one.
Yea it's these certain qualities about cars that some people overlook with vehicles that you wouldn't expect to be satisfying at first glance until you drive it and find out it puts a smile on your face. Many drivers who owned multiple cars have always expressed satisfaction in more basic transportation and as a kid I never understood but after driving so many cars, I finally get it
Crazy how fast lumber and everything worse went up 🧐
Yup it's crazy
Honda accord 2003, 368000 going for 500,000 - NOT FOR SALE
7K? with 300k miles? Now, thats a return on your purchase--long term.
Yup it's insane, saw an LS 460 with 350k miles an 07 in my area and they were asking over $8k for it and they wouldn't even budge on the price crazy
@@MeynMotorGroup OMG!!!
Good review this is a sleeper truck.
Thank you my friend and I def agree it is a sleeper
Timing belt or chain?
The 4.7 v8 uses a timing belt while the 4.0 V6 uses the chain.
7k is abit too expensive considering the huge millage
Pandemic used car prices and demand what can we do
This car for $7k is a better value than any American car after 2 years 😂😂
Brother highlander 2020 review... hickory nc
Hopefully I get one as a press car soon!
Do you work for Cary Imports?
Haha no my friend I don't I only do videos for them
I like to call them the “poor man’s Lexus.”
13:05 Sht he got me haha
😄 congrats my friend it's an awesome vehicle glad you own one
Starting in ‘05, the V8 produced 270hp & 330 lb. ft of torque vs 235hp for the ‘04 V8 models ! The V6 had 245 hp & 282 lb.ft of torque 🤓
Anyway, super reliable and def a truck to keep for 30+ yrs !
....someone name a European truck that has this many miles, in the same condition, that’s still running properly let alone still has the stock trans and A/C unit !! Make me laugh 😹
Oh that's good to know glad they upped the power
i dont understand that much of the american used car sales but isnt a 350k mile 20 yo economy car for 7k expensive af?
Yup that's a lot of money for the miles but Toyota products tend to demand that much. When I was looking for an LS 460, a 350k mile 07 was going for over $8k.
Toyotas in general hold their value but the insane pandemic demand has now added to that
The steering wheel tilts and is telescopic.
