@@ImperatorCaesar22 As part of the 2005-6 upgrade, Toyota mated the V8's 5-speed to the 4.0L V6. Probably to simplify production: easier to just have one transmission. They also (quietly) replaced the V6's head gasket, which in 2003-2005 models could fail at high engine temps. That fixed about the only major failure point of the 1GR-FE.🙂 Two years ago, I bought a (pretty stock 'Sport' ) 2006 T4R with 210k on the clock. Zero frame rust, decent CarFax report, minor hail dimples and the typical Toyota clear-coat rash. It was a steal at $9000 USD. Replaced the ATF, which was pretty old, & fixed a minor power steering leak. I fully expect it last to 400k without much drama. @@bldontmatter5319 ppl are dumb yeah they are well made but if you beat it and don't take care of it will take a shit on ya! this 4runner isnt even worth scrap! its rotten inside out and has 250k plus!
The main difference between the V6 and the V8 is that the V8 uses a drive belt that needs to be replaced every 90,000 miles or so. The V6 uses a drive chain, which in my 4Runner hasn't been replaced in 250,000 miles!
The belt thing is NOT that big of deal. Way worth it for the smoothness, pulling power and all out sound of the V8. Another thing is the V6 in the first couple years had head gasket issues. 🤷♂️To each their own.
@m87orion odd my 2005 has never had any head gasket problems, yet I'll bet the head gasket replacement is substantially cheaper than a $1500 to $2000 rubber belt replacement, which is for a 250,000 mile vehicle is another $6,000 of maintenance costs! And my V6 is quite smooth and gets me 22-24 MPG at 80-85 mph.
@@twistedwacko Yeah I knew two people that had a 2003 and the other a 2004. Both had the head gasket issue. So I used that lol. And I sing the V8 praises because it's "mine". IMO… Many people question why buy a high mileage 4Runner. Reason 1: it will outlive a new car The fact that today at 60k miles people get rid of their cars bc of the many problems cars have today. I am bought a 2009 170k, then friends told me get newer with less miles like a Kia or Chevy or Hyundai and I cringe just thinking that. Why? Bc that is how reliable they are, Toyota 4Runners are. Just a side note my neighbor has a 1998 he lived in Colorado, has over 500+k miles. But you just have to trust your instincts and love your choice! In my case, I ran a very thorough check on this vehicle and everything checked out on car fax, no rust! 4Runners are not for everyone. It does not drive like a car. So if you want smooth sailing or a quiet cabin or fancy pansy stuff, this is not the vehicle for you. I’m simple love exactly what this truck has.
severely underrated man. been watching your vids for the past week now and I love them. you deserve a lot more love. just got an 07 Lancer es as my first car!!
Love the review. Very interesting to have so many storage compartments in the cargo area compared to 5th gen 4Runner. I love the V6 for more fuel range and 2H option with a center diff for 4wd modes. I'm a fan of not having timing belt also. I was surprised this to have 5 speed automatic, When I saw 4-D I was expecting to have 5 speed.
Can attest to reliability. But going 70,000 miles without an oil change makes me cringe. Hell, I thought I was being bold with my 2005 Sport when switching to synthetic, and going 10,000 miles between changes.
I've been driving my 2008 4Runner for 15 years with no problems at all. Everything still looks and works like new, with normal dealer servicing all I have had to do is get new tires, everything else is original. It looks like it should go for another 15 years.
They're reliable and all that, but paying 20k for something like this with low miles is just embarrassing. Remember, people, it's only as reliable as the previous owner, and sitting (for a car) is BAD.
Excellent review. That’s why I don’t want to get rid of my 2006 4runner. Has 160k miles but work and feels like a baby. The paint it’s fading tho. It hurts paying $2k dlls for a paint job in a 20 yr old vehicle 😢
Great review as always zack this vehicle is very pricey I almost bought a 15 one but they ask me an arm and a leg for the truck 😅 then I ended with a rav4 very happy so far
The only thing that can kill these is rust. Even with the miles, the owner can probably sell this for what he paid for it. People want a simple, capable, reliable truck. The Xterra is overlooked and can be picked up for cheap without paying the Toyota Tax. It's as capable as a 4Runner and the only weak point is the radiator on the 4.0 V6 leaking coolant into the transmission cooler. With that fixed, it's simple and reliable too.
These old Toyota's including trucks were very well built - you could say overbuilt meaning they last a very long time. Toyota had good quality in the early 2000s
I shouldn’t have sold my 2005 V6. It had 140k on it, it would still be going now for free. I will say, the 4.7L V8 only had issues with oil leaks, but that cast iron block is basically indestructible. The V6s are incredible but the V8 could probably go to 800k miles
I wonder why you'd need a third row in something this size, especially when there's the Sequioa and in particular, the Sienna, both of which will give you better third row space than this.
I never liked that Toyota gradually moved this toward a family vehicle. By the time this got a 3rd row, the Highlander was available, as well as the Sequoia you mentioned. There was no need to shove a 3rd row in this. Added weight wasn't needed.
@doug6191 the Highlander's third row was also too small, considering it was slightly smaller than the 4runner. Later, even the 3rd generation RAV4 got an optional third row.
Speaker on the door? I guess I never contemplated it, but my Toyota now has speakers on the dash.. I always think of speakers being in the doors. My first car put them there. I find it interesting when the speakers are on the dash lol

I had a 08 Tacoma that had 350,000 miles on it and it ran perfect. That v6 and the 5 speed automatic are fantastic.
Ran? What happened to it ?
yes, automakers don't need to reinvent the shifter. As you said, if it ain't broke don't fix it
nothing wrong with column or console shifters
More complexity = more parts
More parts= more money.
0:22 4 speed? It's actually a five speed. The 5 speed automatic replaced the 4 speed in 2004 for the 2005 model year.
