I had a few lessons from John between 1989 and 1993, both in L.A. and at his place in Manhattan. The man was e very gentle soul and a true innovator on the guitar. He was playing in ways no thers could, back in the '70s, behind the fusion records.
John was never a teacher about systems and datas. Asking him what scales to play on such chord was a waste of better resources.
He was always a teacher for more advanced musicians, those past the "what scale on which chord" stage; mostly musicians who can already play and are on the way to find their voice and path, RIGHT THERE John excelled at suggesting paths that ARE truly musical, not the typical guitar macho bullshit. This video has a lot of that info, about triads, intervals, horizontal playing, melodic cells and their development thru rhythms and contour variations, dynamics, single string improvisation. I wish he had talked more about triads over bass notes as he was a master at that. One thing Jazz will always miss... a duo recording with Bill Evans and John Abercrombie! THAT would have been the ultimate poetry! John was an excellent guitarist capable of playing well and fit with piano players, a very rare quality! Check his recordings with Andy LaVerne for this. His FANTASTIC trio with Marc Johnson and Peter Erskine is just unbelievable! John remains one of the most original and true artists on the guitar! Just timeless! I miss him so much!

I just wish he didn’t have that chorus effect on that everyone,Metheny,Scofield etc. used back then. It almost makes it unlistenable for me. That’s why I never got into Scofield. Don’t know why they all thought that was cool. I’m from that era and never could get into that sound.
