I'm a old ass Maori kiwi surfer now lol but i grew up with this fukn beautiful Oz rock song playing in the background while I practiced my stand up on the flat before I hit the ocean
+Doris Pelger Hiya Doris! When I re-heard the song, and really listened I got that impression. I first heard the song years ago watching Young Einstein. I'd say it's still one of my favorite movies. I love that kind of silliness. It's very moving once you let it speak to you.
If you only ever get once chance in life, listen to this on 12" vinyl through a decent hi fi system, it will take you to places yet undiscovered, enjoy
The whole "Primitive Man" album is a pure masterpiece. Maybe one of my Top 5 albums all time. And "Great Southren Land" is my favorite song on it despite "Street Cafe" and "Hey Little Girl".
I have - I did - and I can remember exactly when I first heard this monolith of a song that should be our national anthem! I have never tired of listening to it. Iva Davies is one of Australia’s most iconic music heroes. He deserves far more recognition than he ever got!
What a fantastic Australian song. So many different versions of it, and all of them inspire me and make me feel proud to be Australian. Love the new dub version - inspired. The 2000 version is also a standout with Taikoz finishing it beautifully. Thanks Iva and the band.
I never would have heard of this band if it weren't for Yahoo Serious! As it turns out, I would listen to their album for hours on end, playing along on my bass guitar. It's nice to know they're still at it so many years later. They've got a fan in Boston, MA.
The same in Oklahoma. The only 2 bands I want to see before I die, Icehouse and Tears for Fears. I'll likely never see either one of them. Please tour the states guys. Even on a limited basis. I would fly anywhere in the states to see them.
Man I live in Canada and this song was awesome the first time I heard it. It still sounds good 22 years later. ICON music never dies. I wish I could see this guy one day here in Canada.
@Ian Thompson I don't know the first two, but Midnight Oil for sure! I'm from Canada so I don't get the widest selection of groups unless they went mainstream back in the day before the internet! Cheers.
I love this song and the Great movie Young Einstein Great Aussie Band this song was my very first Favorite 80s song since the first time when I heard it and still my Favorite song
I LOVE Icehouse!!! I am from USA. I saw them live, back in the early '90's. They were SO amazing!!! Iva Davies is underrated. Cheers to you from Ecuador to have found this outstanding band!
This song transports you to that prisoner island hidden in the summer for a million years, burning you black against the ground over 40000 years, telling you the story of a journey that ended long ago, a great southern land... great job Iva, always loved your work!
Im Jahre 1982 erschien dieser Song und wird mich ewig an meine Jugend erinnern. Die erste große Liebe, das kribbeln im Bauch, kann und will man einfach nicht vergessen. THANKS ICEHOUSE
I grew up in the 80's as a teen in New York and loved Icehouse, visiting that great southern land is a goal before I leave this earth..Australia fascinates me!
Holy crap. This totally brings me back to 5th grade and blasting this out my window. I loved these guys way back in the day. I'm glad I youtubed this. It makes me happy!.
Makes me want to pack up move from sunny Florida to Australia, Iva is wonderful, I've been crushing on him from the time I was in my teens and he is still as beautiful and talented as he ever was. He's like all classically beautiful things, he simply gets better with each year that passes. I also admire his love and dedication to his family, God Bless you Iva. XXXOOO
Love this song, can never get enough of it. Australia, what a country, we are lucky to live in the greatest country on earth. How appropriate for Qantas to name their first Boeing 787 Great Southern Land.
I discovered "Primitive Man" 32 years ago and i've always been wondering 'bout moving to the Great Southern Land. I've necver been there but i'm sure i will be there soon.....

A couple of years my family drove out to One Tree in NSW, where there was nothing in any direction. This song reminds of that huge expanse- very spiritual. Love from little NZ
@Slipstream0001 Thank God for that! Great for the 3 year period in the early 80's that that gated snare drenched in verb ruled the commerical waves but nice to see a crisp snappy snare within a modern sounding mix. That gated stuff went out with the mullet :)
CHILLS ! What a song ❤❤ never, ever gets old !!!
The second...yet greatest...Australian National Anthem....
Please rise!
The 80s was by far the best era in music.......I love the 80s and I love Icehouse........
This needs to be Australia's national anthem
