Actually, there are three basic kinds of zebra: mountain cebras, plains zebras and Grevy zebra. The Hartmamn zebra here (the troll one) belongs to the mountain zebras kind, as the bucherlli's zebra belongs to the plains zebras kind. Mostly of the zebra species belong to the plains zebras kind, and they're the usual kind in TV... Grevy's are the biggest ones and they just live in the half north Africa, and mountain zebras happen to be the smallest ones.
I find it fascinating that animals can tell when a variant of their own species is near. It's not like they can look in a mirror to see what they look like to tell they are slightly different.
Idk if I’d use the word “variant” Hartmann’s zebra and burchell’s zebras are two different species, Hartmann’s being a subspecies of the mountain zebra and burchells a subspecies of the plains zebra. It’s like saying donkeys are a variant of a horse, they aren’t, but they’re in the same genus but they are separate species.
They were fighting because they have different coloring. One of them has white stripes on a brown/black background and the other has brown/black stripes on a white background.
Man, the pullback by that zebra when the other one threw hooves was incredible. It was like it had Spidey sense. Watch it on .25x speed. It's like watching Andersen Zebra vs Zebra Adesanya!
I was wondering how much of that was actually play and not aggression. There is a Hartmann's that hangs out with a group of Burchell's and they usually get along fine.
All equine enjoy rolling in the dirt and mud. They love it, in fact. Our horses are always up for a good roll around. It's referred to as a "dirt bath". Other herd animals are also fond of dirt baths. One theory is that it helps with the flies.

In this case it's part of the body language saying: "I am not completely at ease, this situation is stressful". In other cases, for example, if it was just a few lazy "wags" it could be just removing the flies.
@@mitchellulrich930 No they are separate species. Hartmann’s is a subspecies of the Mountain Zebra, whereas Burchell’s is a subspecies of the Plains Zebra.
Hartmann’s Zebra got knocked off its high horse(yes I know..) When the Burchell’s Zebra actually tried to kick it, almost like "Wait, you fight back like that as well!?". XD
The rampaging zebra is probably a different kind of zebra. It has stripes all the way down to the tips of its feet. Apart from that, the one that usually brings families to the pond is the rare Equus quagga burchellii, which was once thought to be extinct. It has thin stripes between the stripes. There are no stripes down to the toes, which are white.
Thanks for your reply - and thanks for your site. It's not often you get to see different species flush up against each other. So here I'm thinking you get to see Centrifugal Speciation in action. The ragtag bachelor group shows in microcosm a struggle between the "central" - actually southern central - "plains" Burchell's interacting with the "peripheral" wild desert Hartmann's. (For the keen see my video, The Origins of Music - and All Art, 2017. And for the super-keen see Colin Groves, A Theory of Human and Primate Evolution, 1989.) Until we understand the ideas involved here, we won't even begin to understand the modern phenomenon of a civilised domestic West versus the peripheral northern authoritarian regimes of Russia, North Korea etc.
Equids are a family of odd-toed hoofed mammals currently native to Asia and Africa, there are eight extant species within a single extant genus with three subgenera, living equids range in size from the perdjie to the grevy's zebra, the eight living equid species are the Kiang (Equus (Asinus) kiang), the Onager (Equus (Asinus) hemionus), the Perdjie (Equus (Asinus) africanus (cladistically including the Domestic Donkey (Equus (Asinus) africanus domesticus))), the Takhi (Equus (Equus) przewalskii), the Tarpan (Equus (Equus) ferus (cladistically including the Domestic Horse (Equus (Equus) ferus caballus))), the Mountain Zebra (Equus (Hippotigris) zebra), the Plains Zebra (Equus (Hippotigris) burchellii), and the Grevy's Zebra (Equus (Hippotigris) grevyi).

The Hartmanns has narrow stripes that stop at the flank. The Burchells stripes are wider and carry on down.
